Leicester City Ambassador Alan Birchenall is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack on Thursday evening.

Alan, 71, was representing the Club at the 2016 Leicester Mercury Sports Awards at Welford Road when he collapsed needing urgent medical attention.

Thanks to the swift response of both those on site and arriving paramedics, Alan received treatment and regained consciousness at the scene before being transferred to Glenfield Hospital, where he is now in a stable condition following overnight examination.

On behalf of Alan, his family and everyone at Leicester City Football Club, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those whose instant assistance ensured Alan received the appropriate treatment in the quickest time possible.

Alan would also like to express his thanks for the numerous messages of love and support he has received.

‘Birch’ will continue to be monitored over the coming days as he continues his recovery and he does so with the thoughts and love of everyone at Leicester City Football Club.

They're only trying to show some respect. Instead of slagging them off, come up with a better idea.

He did.

It's just a bit weird having the footballing equivalent of a candle lit vigil for somebody recovering.

The club should put an image of the birch holding the prem trophy on the back of the clappers which everybody should hold above their head in the 10th minute.

I agree with you . It just seems to me that when anybody comes with an idea, even when there intentions are honourable, they get slated for it. No need.

You do know the game is tomorrow, right?

Well you see I'm in the position of having dealt with them privately, so I stand by my statement.

Singing his name is fine, it doesn't have to be BETTER. Unless of course you're 100% LCFC in which case it's about standing out.

:o How can you when we're already lighting up our phones, singing his name, doing a jig and hopping on one leg to show our support.

Yep, they'll be on Facebook soon as it happens shouting "Look, they are doing OUR tribute"

It really is quite terrible.

I'm gutted that the Birch has taken ill and he has my thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery.

That said, football has gotten so weird and cloying, hasn't it?

There can't be a single match anymore where the fans are directed to wave, sing, display lights or some such other action to show 'thoughts'. Why have we found ourselves needing a choreographed display for every little thing? Someone fell over in L1? Let's clap on their seat number. The list is endless. I find it so bizarre...it makes my skin crawl a little. I know it comes from a good place, but even so.

With this in mind I'm certain that everyone involved with Leicester will have the Birch in their thoughts. We don't need to flash phone lights, chant his dogs name and do the poznan on his shirt number. It's implied, isn't it? We care.

I understand the sentiment expressed by a few that there is a tendency and a pressure - particularly since social media hit its prime - for people to go OTT in expressing support and well wishing to those that have suffered misfortune. But I think, in this instance, people can be forgiven. it's such a shock because of just how special a person Birch is and all we want is for the guy to make a full recovery.

Obviously, aside from his fan favourite status as a City icon, his charity work, Club Ambassador role and regular appearances are well documented. But the fact is, at his age he doesn't have to do what he does, but it's clearly important to him. What's not to respect about that? It's obvious he doesn't like to let others down and that is a rare quality in an individual in my experience. The fact he is an ex pro footballer makes it even more remarkable and heartening to me.

Just think people should do whatever they see fit in sending positive energy and make it known to Birch and his family just how much he is loved and respected. He'd do it and has for others.

I have no idea how it's taken me so long to see this video:

If you ever need to describe to someone who The Birch is, show them this video.

What a man.

Lot of OTT stuff being suggested now in my opinion.

He's not popped his clogs you know.

No but it's nice for everyone to show their love and support for him and exactly what he means to the club and the fans. Don't see what the issue is with a phone flash tribute IMO.

Phone lighters, Birch's face on clappers held above the head and singing about him throughout the game all referred to on this page alone. Half expect someone to suggest a HBO mini series next.

I appreciate what he has done and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

A short song perhaps then get behind the team. That's my view.

It's mentioned online in the press so that looks like the best way to go ...   Lights at ten ! (His old number) and all the Chelsea boys can join in too ...      And will look very nice on MOTD which he no doubt will watch !   Plus a few ad lib songs here and there of course ...
