Ricey Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 This could be our turning point, but the positivity of the result out the way. There are still some huge concerns for me. Wrong team selection. Musa. Why? Ok, to try and counter, but when we won the ball we didn't actually get it forward that quickly. Gray has pace as well. This isn't in hindsight, Musa has made Levi Porter look like Saido Mane all season. No clear tactical plan. ...or at least if there was, the players were confused. You either press in packs of 3 or more from the front or you don't press at all, instead sitting back and filling the space. Our front two half heartedly pressed their defence, with no support, which only created a huge gap for Nzonzi to work in. Eibar at the weekend pressed in groups from the front and it totally unnerved Sevilla. Another odd thing was that when we did win the ball back and Drinkwater recieved it, he was either very hesitant to play it long or Vardy was coming short. For once there was space in behind to exploit and we didn't want to seem to exploit it. Defence still horrendously disorganised. Simpson pushing on and not tracking back, Huth charging out for no reason, Huth not even being able to head a ball anymore, back four not keeping a consistent line, midfield still not protecting them....I could go on. Despite keeping them to 2 goals, I can't say we defended any better than previous matches. I just hope one goal doesn't paper of the cracks, well more like canons, that exist within our defence. Riyad Mahrez I have defended him a lot this season and put down his lack of form down to the fact he is being crowded out. Last night he wasn't and yet still had little impact. He also, again, looked totally disinterested. At one point he was our closest player to the ball and he was WALKING whilst closing down. I thought with it being a last 16 Champions League game he might actually do some defensive work, but no. Great result, but if there aren't changes against Liverpool and we see Huth, Musa etc it is going to kill the good feeling around the fans after last night.
AmarteyAndChill Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 Sorry, did you just say Simpson pushing on? He never goes past the half way line.
Raw Dykes Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 I agree. I think the players upped their game because of the occasion. I expect us to go back to our usual ways on Monday.
norwichfox Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 Turning point, season starts here, now we can kick on etc.....just sick of hearing these terms, just need the team to get their act together, Swansea, Hull, Burnley etc. would have beaten us again last night. We did look better in short bursts at times, but mainly we were sh1te we need to play well for the better part of a 90 minutes plus long game. Great result for us though, love to be at KP for the return (maybe I'll go there on my moped whilst singing Brexit )
foxy boxing Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 defensively we always look like we are going to concede goals and of course the players upped their game because it was the biggest game of the season!. i struggle to find what Musa is actually good at and he needs educating on how to read and play the game. be honest does anyone think Claudio is a good enough tactician all he seems to do is send the players out on to the field with no clear objectives on how to play the game!
Beechey Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 About Mahrez: while he had a bad game, remember he does tire quickly, he was subbed off most league games last season, this season he's been playing (mostly) consistent 90+ minutes, for someone with low stamina, can't be easy. Doesn't excuse his lack of effort or awareness though. Around the 80th minute we were on the break, he had the opportunity to make a long forward pass and just started dribbling in circles. Dunno what he was thinking (wasting time?).

Yes, becasue he has said many times he doesn't push on to give Riyad more space (not that he does anything with it anymore).

foxfanazer Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 Agree with most of that except I wouldn't say Vardy half heartedly pressed. Mahrez did which maybe made Vardy's efforts look futile but I saw glimmers of the old Vardy last night

Where was he for the second goal then? He doesn't overlap, but he does push on away from the back four, but I've no idea why really.
mozartfox Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 This is what concerns me........FFS Claudio ditch the the usual back four before it is to late

StriderHiryu Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 This is one of the major concerns. This is the shot just after we scored to make it 2-1. Only one player was happy - Musa. Very worrying with all the rumours we've heard this season.
leicesterlad1989 Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 I noticed the lack of celebration on the bench, along with the fact Musa didn't walk over to Gray when he was substituted. He just walked straight to the bench. Add that with the fact the it was Kasper doing the pre-match huddle "speech," and Vardy doing the media chat, it all seems a bit strange.
StriderHiryu Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 The following video is also interesting, especially the section at 2:30. Marcotti says that his intel is that the friction is not with Ranieri, but with other players. They feel that Ranieri was too soft on players from last year who were not performing and hasn't given others the chance.

Musa didnt notice Gray until he was half way to the bench as Gray was standing 10 yards further down the line so he just acknowledged him with a slight hand gesture. I think you're looking for things that aren't actually there.
ozvaldo Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 Kasper was solid, as ever. He's kept us in the tie. I thought Danny Simpson had a pretty decent game considering how bad he has been this season, and the quality of the opposition. Wes & Huth need to **** off. They're just past it. Fuchs looked ok when he had time on the ball but his legs have totally gone - when he's tracking back it always looks like he's going to foul. Musa should never be in the first team squad again. Useless. Drinky & N'Didi gave Sevilla too much respect. Albrighton ran around a lot but didn't really show much of a threat. He LITERALLY crosses it from anywhere. Mahrez looked, for most of the game, uninterested. Didn't manage to do much going forward. Really glad Vardy scored - hope this sparks some life into him. Although, he did get that hat-trick against Man City and nothing happened, so you never know. Good fight overall to get a goal and stay in the tie. However, still a lot of major concerns all over the park.
purpleronnie Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 How can losing and being totally outplayed be a turning point? If a miracle happens in the 2nd leg and we progress then that could be a turning point.

People looking at it as a turning point are looking at the energy and positivity we ended with, particularly after the goal. If we carry that through then we'll be grand; the problem is the if.
Karljohn Posted 23 February 2017 Posted 23 February 2017 Mahrez dining out on last season. He doesn't want it. He's on the work avoidance scheme. Get rid.
