Treats the audience as though they are intelligent and is clearly a very bright guy himself. I think this is central to picking a good pundit. Most networks seem to pick a pundit based on how good a player they were. Some of them struggle to string sentences together and some are quite obviously towards the left hand end of the intelligence bell curve. Pundits should be picked based on how well they speak, think and analyse, not how many goals they scored.

People like Ian Wright and Robbie Savage get their jobs because they're" characters".
I am an Ostrich Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Johnny Giles RTE and Irish Independent - says it how it is just the best..
Parafox Posted 5 March 2017 Author Posted 5 March 2017 Nobody's mentioned Jermain Jenus yet. Is there a reason?
Jimothy Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 21 minutes ago, Webbo said: Depends what you want from a pundit. Do you want someone who tells you what you want to hear or do you want someone who can teach you something you didn't know, challenge your assumptions? I certainly don't get upset when they say something I disagree with. It's only their opinion. I agree, but; What annoys me is when they don't back up their opinon. EG, when we were chasing the title and Savage kept saying we wouldn't win it, and when asked why his only answer was that we just wouldn't. If you're going to share opinion you should be able to back it up with reasoning and facts. Also what Keown did last night where his opinion was challenged with a fact and he just brushed it off and carried on. What makes a good pundit or co-commentator is as I said above backing up your opinion but also being able to admit you're wrong. Gary Neville the other day was commentating and said something was a foul, but on the reply it was clear it wasn't, and he corrected himself. That's something someone like Don Goodman refuses to do, and would still be claiming it was a handball or a foul after numerous replays conclusively prove otherwise. Saying all that though, if they are giving an opinion and they aren't challenged then stick to it, don't get all muddled. Listening to Phil Neville's comments after the Sevilla defeat, he started off by saying we played well and then by the end of his three minutes rant he was saying how poor we'd played and would have been better off losing 4-0 because 2-1 gives us hope of going through and we've got no chance. So in saying all that, I think Gary Neville, Shearer, Murphy, Jenas, Wright Harrison and Henry are good pundits. Phil Neville, Owen, Carragher, Mills, Keown, Savage and Sutton are bad.

Mease Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 For entertainment George Best and Rodney Marsh were good value.
Hammo Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 The European Football Show on BT sport is in a class of its own. James Richardson and the gang of journalists (James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Rafael Honigstein) are clever, informative and funny. in terms of ex-player tv pundits, Danny Murphy is the only one whose opinion I actually respect. Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand offer genuine insight and speak well, but the rest are mostly obnoxious tossers and dullards. The true Voice of Football though is Martin Tyler. A brilliant commentator and the nicest, most courteous man you could ever wish to meet.
Patrick Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Martin O'Neill are about the only ones I have any time for.
lnkstern Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 I like a lot of the commentators we get on the American NBC feed. Jon Champion Jim Beglin (my favorite) Peter Drury Arlo White Lee Dixon Graham Le Saux And the in-studio crew. Rebecca Lowe Robbie Earle Robbie Mustoe Kyle Martino And sure, they didn't believe Leicester could win the title (until we did), but hell, most of us didn't believe it until it happened! So I don't hold that against any of them.
Wymsey Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Ian Stringer is better than he used to be (especially during the Pearson era where he used to ask many questions to the wrong person). Couldn't stand Alan Young, so out of touch with the modern game that you really couldn't take him seriously. Both Gerry Taggart and Matt Elliott are both decent to listen to as long-term recent ex-players.
turtmcfly Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Always enjoyed listening to Stevie Claridge. Not sure if he's an ex-pundit

And I don't know where he's disappeared to recently, and I don't really have a preference towards him. But any excuse to get this pic out Great Picture that one! I always found Garth talked a bit peculiar and tried to make out he was super intelligent but he wasn't. Amusing all the same.

Stringer i cannot stand, he's not the worst commentator, but his conduct during the great escape campaign was deplorable.
dynamark Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Matt Elliot bless his tiny vocabulary.. Positives and negatives, collective, responsibilty, group. He has improved a lot though with the experience he has had last couple of years. Stringer and Pearson was very entertaining.Which part of the four nil defeat pleased you most.
sylofox Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Shearer is a cvnt. I would rather have a frosty mop stuck up my arse than listen to him. Merson take the drink drugs away is funny Savage replace frosty mop with a broken bottle. As for the two Liverpool ***** sh1tting barbed wire would be fun. Lineker is broken glass.
Fox92 Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Gary Neville is the best on Sky. But 5live are the best... Mark Chapman, John Murray, Connor McNamara are all under the radar. Savage is a mind up merchant and I like him for that. 606 is a superb listen and Savage makes it.

I've got time for Stringer too. I want my local radio commentator to be enthusiastic and biased.
dynamark Posted 5 March 2017 Posted 5 March 2017 Like em both.Stringer never got to grips with Pearson and it was always a battle. Matt understands the game and has been very balanced on what has happened last 10 days hes learning the trade.
