'N'Golo had a clause and when he left they stopped those clauses,' Mahrez says. 'They said they would never give one to anyone after that.' And though he speaks of Leicester with affection, Mahrez clearly feels he does not know all that there is to know about which clubs have been interested in him in the past 18 months.

The Kante release clause was a complete bogus that we got stung on.

He didn’t even want to sign for us and had rejected the move cus he was holding out for a move to Marseille. It was only down to the fact we were so persistent, Marseille weren’t 100% sold on him & we offered him double the wages that he signed. The release clause was a sweetener!

It was the equivalent of signing a complete unknown player from league 1 and adding a £30m release clause to get the deal over the line!

He’s a complete one off so can point fingers all day long at the usual scapegoats but just imagine if we hadn’t agreed it?!?! U win some u lose some in football and looking at the bigger picture I think we won big time!

Well said!

Riyad is a truly gifted player there is no doubt, but to get his 'dream' move he needs to consistently play like the Ballon d'Or nominee. If he does put in some magic performances from now till the end of the season then he might just get the move he wishes, but in a football climate where average players can cost you £30 million it's quite obvious it would take serious money for us to sell him.

No more release clauses till..... Nacho.

Not that this clause will be triggered any time soon.

its not a clause anyone can trigger other than us or him. City cant just say they want him and take him. It only comes into effect if we want to sell or he wants out. City then have to be given first option at an agreed fee. He can still refuse city and elsewhere.

I don't buy for one moment that we couldn't sign an unknown from league one who had no other concrete interest and we were already doubling or trippling his wages, without a bloody release clause. They might have asked for one, but don't for one second think that if we'd said no that they wouldn't have come.

i think he is more frustrated about him being left in the dark, and he has the right to feel as such. if there is no one offering a proper some for him, than just tell him that. the roma directeur said that they blocked them and barca. surely barca won't offer less than 30 and riyad thinks that 30 with a few add-ons should be enough for his dream move.

again, riyad showing how naive he is (imo). he thinks that the club will lose money to make sure he will achieve his dreams. riyad had/has no leverage, and he thinks that there is some kind of "code of honer"

we have a saying in my country, "you tied it with your hands, now go ahead and untie it with your teeth". meaning, you got yourself into that mess, and now it's your problem.

So, we had quite a bit of leverage already and then threw the release clause in as well.

You speak like we didn’t think he was going to be that good - well in that case our scouts screwed up (or Rudkin didn’t listen to them) and if so why were we (clearly) so desperate to get him?

I don’t agree this is the only way you can get players to sign for you. If they’re not using them anymore, then it’s obvious even the club realise they made a mistake.
