University is doing brilliantly well. And they are making a big thing about cultural history of scar music and the world war bombings. I always grew up think that Coventry looked better before they rebuilt it after the war but there is culturally some cool stuff going on there at the moment - we were just talking the other day about going for a day trip.

They always give these things to shitholes to make them feel better about themselves, Londonderry, Hull and now Coventry, it's a bit like the trophy they give to a fat kid on sports day.

 

No one who really wants to see some serious culture is going to head to these places when you can get to cities like Paris and Rome for a day's wages in 2017.

I remember when Hull beat our Soulsby inspired bid he was devastated.

Their fans response to our "champions" goading was priceless.

Personally think it's a good idea that they give it to non-touristy cities that could do with a bit of bigging up. Shame we didn't get it this year really.

To be fair, the ethos behind this competition is to improve places that are pretty grotty but whose business and local political communities are hoping to better their present condition and require both profile and investment to do so. In the sense of that purpose there would be little point awarding it to an Oxford or Cambridge. The problem is in the title City of Culture as that is something the candidates are clearly not. “Shit Cities That Would Like To Be Better And Want Lots Of Cash That They Otherwise Wouldn’t Stand A Prayer Of Getting Their Hands On” would be a more apt title for the award but I’m guessing they won’t be changing the name to this anytime soon.
