I think we've had quite enough of experts, thank you

Edited, is that more realistic?

He was a great Physicist and person who was more clever than most people put together and helped bring science and physics into the mainstream, and I also loved his appearances on shows like the Simpsons and the Big Bang Theory.

One of few 'celebrity' deaths to genuinely sadden me. He defied the odds given his condition, contributed a huge amount to his field, managed to interest the masses, and I'm sure inspired a huge amount of people of many ages to learn, study, and further our understanding.

Good section about him on James O'Brien's show earlier, well worth a listen if interested

When fades at last the last lit sun.
Then in the cold and silent black
As light and matter end
We’ll have ourselves a last look back
And toast an absent friend.

Did you ever meet him Mac? Must admit I thought of you as soon as I heard he’d passed.

Sadly I never did, though I would have liked to.

RIP.

I would recommend The Theory of Everything to anyone who'd like to know more about him.

Superb film.

I just recommended that to a co-worker. Her only knowledge of him is from Big Bang Theory lol

To my shame I didn't know all that much about him apart from the fact he was utterly brilliant and had written A Brief History of Time amongst other things.

Honestly thought it was something he had done in his 30s or whatever and ALS came about later in life.

He's an inspiration.

Don't usually care all that much about celebrity deaths (that overrated comedian with the feather duster and the bigot from Bullseye being 2 recent examples) but this is a genuine loss for our species, a sad day.

As someone who has read a bit of Feynman, a bit of Penrose, a fair bit of Krauss and read and re-read most of John Gribbins’ books, I’m ashamed to say that I never got around to reading ABHOT.

Some cultural icon, though.

What a shame.

Defied all the odds to reach 76 but I can't help wondering what he might have achieved if he was able bodied.  It must have been so frustrating and so time consuming to have to twitch his eye to move a cursor.

I don't think you have quite understood what I am trying to say.

Or maybe you're just thick and you want to willfully take it as a slight on the great man.

I'll try again.

Imagine having the brain of Stephen Hawking yet being unable to get your thoughts down quickly.  Imagine if he was able bodied and therefore able to write your thoughts down, to operate a keyboard properly but instead you have the ability to only twitch your eye.

Simply put, if he had been able bodied he would have been able to dedicate so much more time to his life's work.

If you want to take that as an insult to Professor Hawkins or as a slight against the disabled then knock yourself out.

...No please, knock yourself out.

His ability as a scientist has been talked about so much over the years, but the fact he lived to 76 when told he only had a couple of years to go from his early 20's is well, out of this world..

May not have helped - would probably have spent more time clubbing, in trampoline parks and on his Wii than he did, to the detriment of his research
