Not being able to get it past the first defender is the level we’ve been at for about 15 years mate.... having someone who can do that is a start lol

It is is that’s all you want to remember

Off the top top of my head

pun intended

Sorry my point was it’s nice to see deeper crosses but hard to judge how they will be dealt with by top tier defenders

In the past I've never genuinely believed we'll score direct from a free kick when we get one in a dangerous area. Today though I thought Maddison was going to bury that and he came so close! It had real pace on it too.

That’s all really... feel free to discuss ?

I’ve waited years for someone to take a corner like that for us, could be a real asset when Maguire is back.

Could be a real asset for us when Vards is back.

After the success of set pieces of the world cup, I think this year will be the season of the set piece. Ironically as Tony Pulis and West Brom leave the league. The stat for corner conversion is about 4% or so. If there is a betting line I'd take the over. Probably over 6% as well. And it's great that we just picked up a set piece wizard.

Actually I think with set pieces I think the opposition you're up against doesn't matter so much. I'll use the last world cup as an argument for my point - look how many goals were scored from set pieces. If you have good delivery and physically immense players you have a high chance to get a lot of goals because it's really hard to properly defend against a scenario with 7 or 8 players all moving in the box at the same time. Both France and Croatia in the World Cup final conceded goals from set pieces. Sweden had a great defence in the tournament but couldn't stop Maguire due to his size and stature. Ndidi and Maguire have terrific ability in aerial duels, Evans likely will too. It could add 5 to 10 goals per season which is a big deal. Martin O'Neil's teams were renowned for scoring goals from set pieces so it'd be nice to have that in our locker again.

Going back to Maddison in general, he looked great. What I think he's going to add more than anything else is that he's going to improve those around him. He's going to be playing key passes into the channels and through balls consistently. I know he's not the same type of player, but a player like Modric is a good example - he can cause carnage on the pitch if keeps getting the ball because he makes fantastic use of the ball. Gary McAllister and Gary Parker (to a lesser extent) are the sort of players I have in mind here.

I don't want to get carried away, but we've been crying out for a proper number 10 for years and years at both club and country level. If we think about last season, we had the ball but it just went sideways or back slowly and there was never any real attacking intent. Madders is hopefully going to be the spark that ignites our team. The fact that he can do that AND can deliver a great corner... well I for one think the image at the top of this thread it entirely justified!

It really is a shame we lost Riyad because him and Maddison would have been electric. I personally think Mahrez is going to be one of the best players in the division this season, he had incredible stats for a team that doesn't really play in a way configured for him. With Silva and DeBruyne feeding him and Walker on the overlap.... I think he will smash it personally.

I'm not convinced they'll be a real increase in set piece goals. I think VAR was the main reason for the amount of goals from corners in the world cup. Defenders quickly lost the taste for holding and grappling when penalties started to be given so regularly for it. With no VAR in the PL I can see Maguires sudden lethalness from corners quickly reverting to last season's level.

Steve Walsh is/was the most dominant effective player in the air I have ever seen for LCFC and probably ever. Should have him in for training especially the youngster on how to attack the ball. (And player)

There's a perception on here about us being particularly bad at set pieces but WhoScored have us as scoring the 7th most last season.

Imagine how many we’ll score now our corners will clear the first man!

I think a Maddison /Vardy partnership will be electric this  season.

Maddison - key figure for our future.

Set pieces - our problem is CONCEDING from set pieces. I can Imagine Kasper's training advice:

"Right, Danny, No matter where the ball comes in- you NEVER leave your line - you never catch or punch the ball no matter whos about to head it. You never help your defenders out.

Ohh, and maybe , while you're on your line, a silly star-jump or two will help out....."

I am excited about this prospect, too. Like Strider, I would have loved to see how much Maddison could have combined with Mahrez too. What a shame the timing just didn't work out. One can only sigh.

People go on about we can't or haven't replaced Mahrez. This guy could total his assists just by beating the first man. Not something Mahrez did most of the time.
