The England boss will stick with only Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford in his starting line-up.

The much-changed look is designed to give players minutes but also means Maguire has his homecoming at Leicester .

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli returned to his club yesterday because of a muscle injury but is expected to be fit for the weekend.

Three Lions In Leicester As Switzerland Clash Looms

The stage is set for Tuesday's showpiece fixture between England and Switzerland at King Power Stadium.
BySam Stevens

As both sides concluded their preparations on Monday, the world’s media gathered on Filbert Way to speak to Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate and Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

It’s 15 years since England last played in front of a Leicester crowd as a side overseen by Sven-Göran Eriksson defeated Serbia & Montenegro in preparation for UEFA EURO 2004.

This England side, however, arrive at King Power Stadium after defying expectations to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Russia – an achievement which was aided by the indomitable presence of Maguire in defence, as well as his brilliant header against Sweden in the last-eight.

That fourth-placed finish matched the Three Lions' best-ever World Cup campaign on foreign soil and created a sense of national optimism that anyone under the age of 30 will seldom have experienced.

Naturally, the topic of playing in Leicester was a common theme in Monday’s press conference.

Harry Maguire: England and Leicester defender on his rise from League One to a World Cup semi-final

Harry Maguire has made 11 starts and two substitute appearances for England

On 14 September 2013, Harry Maguire was part of the Sheffield United team that lost 1-0 at Carlisle in League One.

Fast forward five years and the 25-year-old Leicester City defender is set to walk out in front of his own club's fans in an England shirt at the King Power Stadium.

Maguire has gone from the third tier of English football to the World Cup semi-final in double-quick time.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis, Maguire discusses his meteoric rise as he prepares for his 14th appearance for the Three Lions in a friendly against Switzerland.

'I do pinch myself'
Maguire spent four seasons in League One with Sheffield United before signing for Premier League Hull City in July 2014 in a move worth £2.5m.

He joined the Tigers on the same day they signed left-back Andrew Robertson, now at Liverpool, from Dundee United for £2.85m.

Maguire stayed at Hull three years before joining Leicester in a £17m deal. His England debut came against Lithuania last October, and he has just signed a new five-year Leicester contract.

"Obviously the last five or six years of football, I do pinch myself," said Maguire.

"Playing in League One week in week out, then I get an England Under-21 call-up and I'm pinching myself with that.

"Then playing in Premier League, you pinch yourself again.

"The ladder just keeps going. It's nice to sign a new deal at Leicester and to be rewarded for the great season we had last season as a team as well."

'Playing in League One helped shape me'
Maguire made his Sheffield United debut aged 18 towards the end of the 2010-11 season. The Blades were struggling in the Championship and were eventually relegated after finishing six points from safety.

Over the next three seasons he went on to make 129 League One appearances, and believes he would not have made it as far as he has without the experiencing lower-league football.

"To play in League One in every game when I was 18 was massive for my development," he said.

"It's something I'm very proud of. I have great memories and it was a great experience.

"If it didn't happen for me back then, I probably wouldn't be where I am now."

'My family keep me grounded'
Maguire could be excused for allowing his rapid rise go to his head.

However, he said his family, friends and agent were all responsible for helping keep his feet on the ground.

"I'm really close to everyone. I support them all and they always support me and follow me around the country supporting me every game," he said.

"If I do ever get a little bit too big for my boots, they kick me straight back down. I'm a grounded lad and I just look forward to see what's going to happen in the future."

'England need to push on'
Maguire was involved in all seven of England's games at this summer's World Cup in Russia, scoring in the quarter-final win over Sweden.

He has established himself as a key member of Gareth Southgate's team.

"You can see what we are building," he added. "He is trying to put his style on the game. The big tournaments are the ones we are going to get judged on mainly.

"You see in the summer we performed, we got to a level where we reached a World Cup semi-final.

"People say you have got to be patient, but it was pretty soon in terms of reaching a World Cup semi-final from where we were at in recent years.

"I think we are just building as a team and the way we are playing and I think we can push on now."

Chit chat ...   Is it me or does our Harry (after golden bollocks Kane) seem to be the poster boy of the England team ?? ...   I know he's extended his contract but I hope all this doesn't go to his slab head ...     and ....   JV has gotten some bad press for ending his England career ...   loads of snidey comments and pics of him on holiday at Disneyland ...    that man would fvckin run through walls for his team but has been misplayed and overlooked by Southgate ...   he was never used properly and that p1sses me off ....    I don't blame him one bit for leaving.

I'm amazed that a category 2 adult ticket is £45 for a friendly  Absolutely shocking No wonder there are so many tickets still available

Yeah, that's why we decided not to bother. Friendlies at Wembley were priced about £10 adult £5 kids last year!

What does Southgate or anyone else see in Dier? And he's captain. Seems as thick as anything and certainly not very skilled.

If Southgate doesn't bring both Chilly and Gray on in the second half then there could be a lynching in Leicester. After all a lot of people are paying the exorbitant ticket price having been teased that the Leicester 3 will play.

Just realised this morning I am in SK1 and not G1 as per the norm, just realised there's a £10 difference and worked out why.

For a friendly the full prices are ridiculous but the concession prices are absolutely scandalous.

I think we’ll see one if not both. Will confirm suspicions of a marketing ploy if neither feature and that will be very disappointing.

Berner: Amazing To Be Back In Leicester
INTERNATIONALS
Published 1 hr 7 mins ago

Former Leicester City left-back Bruno Berner described returning to King Power Stadium as ‘an amazing feeling’ as his countrymen prepare to face England on Tuesday night.

A Big Moment For The City, Says Berner
The ex-Switzerland international will be on Filbert Way to watch his nation face Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions in a friendly fixture.

Berner, now manager at Swiss outfit SC Kriens, reflected fondly on both his time at Leicester and the stunning success the Club had shortly after he returned to his homeland.

“It’s an amazing feeling [to be here],” Berner told LCFC TV ahead of the game. “I’ve got a lot of memories here, so it’s great to be here and great to be back.

“It was an amazing story (City’s Premier League triumph), even to watch it from quite far away, from Switzerland. I was proud to be part of that foundation where the Club just kept going and building on from their achievements in the past.

'A Chance To Present Leicester To The World'
Bruno Berner believes England's clash with Switzerland on Tuesday will no doubt be a proud moment for the city of Leicester.

“I remember the owners coming in when they took over the Club and they said ‘we want to go to the Premier League’ and here we are. They became Premier League champions, so it’s an amazing story.”

After four years with the Foxes, Berner headed back to Switzerland to earn his coaching badges. He took up a coaching role in FC Zürich’s academy before being named manager of FC Tuggen in November 2016.

The following summer, he took up a managerial role at SC Kriens and earned promotion during his maiden season in charge.

“It’s better,” joked Berner when discussing his return to Switzerland. “No, it’s different. Going home is always great. I was in England for five years playing for Blackburn and Leicester so I had an amazing time.

“My wife was pregnant with my daughter and we decided to go home and kick on in Switzerland. I also wanted to give her something back because she just followed me for five years in England to support me in football.

“Then, we thought coming towards the end of my career, what are we going to do? Do we stay in England? I was always thinking of going into coaching once I turned 30, but we decided to go home and build up our life there.”

Having played in England for five seasons – first at Blackburn Rovers before moving to City – it will no doubt be a special fixture for the 40-year-old.

“Having that game and watching the game as a Swiss fan, also with my affinity for English football, it’s just great to watch the game,” he continued. “I’m very much looking forward to the game.

It’s a great opportunity to present themselves – Leicester City as a club but Leicester as a city as well. Hopefully, it will be a very good game and me being here watching Switzerland, it’s going to be great.

Bruno Berner LCFC TV
“I think it’s very, very big [for the Club]. What I heard, it’s the second time that England have played in Leicester, so it goes back quite a while.

“It’s a great opportunity to present themselves – Leicester City as a club but Leicester as a city as well. Hopefully, it will be a very good game and me being here watching Switzerland, it’s going to be great.”

Berner went on to highlight several talented players in the Switzerland set-up, some of which he has previously worked with while coaching.

“Djibril Sow was playing under me when I was Under-18s coach at FC Zürich, he’s a rising star for Swiss football,” said Berner. “Also, Kevin Mbabu. He played for Newcastle [United] for a few years.

“I wasn’t there (in England) at the time but he carried on in Switzerland in the Swiss league and is now a very strong right full-back. He fully deserved to be called up.

“Xherdan Shaqiri is now at Liverpool, he’s new as a no.10, as a shadow striker behind the main striker. It’s a different role but I think it's a role that suits him. He’s a player to look out for for the game.”

Supporters could potentially see three Foxes stars in action at King Power Stadium, with Harry Maguire, Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell all earning call-ups.

“That’s massive,” said Berner of City’s significant presence in the England squad. “You just asked me the question how it was 10 years ago and now we talk about internationals playing at Leicester City.

To play for your country, especially for the first time, it’s something as a child or teenager, you dream of those days.

Bruno Berner LCFC TV
“That’s massive and it’s very big for the Club. It’s an amazing story.”

As a former international himself, Berner says he can relate to Chilwell and Gray’s recent maiden senior call-ups and added: “The moment you first get a call-up for your country, it’s pure goose bumps. You can’t describe it, you don’t have the words.

“To play for your country, especially for the first time, it’s something as a child or teenager, you dream of those days. Here we are, you just got called up and the moment you step on that pitch the first time playing for your country, it’s one of the best feelings ever.”
