That's a good point - ours isn't.

I think there may be some government scheme where you can get help with the cost of loft insulation or something. Should look into it really as it makes quite a big difference I'm led to believe...

It’s all means tested matey...

Tbf loft insulation isn't that dear. I did our loft in the old house for less than £30.

I've just checked my thermostat and my house is currently 21 degrees so it doesn't need to be on yet. I have thought about putting the heating on the last couple of evenings but have resisted so far, I try to wait until the clocks change. I'm with @Col city fanwith the Hive too, I love mine.

Hold out until November and then only when it’s cold, usually it’s the women who want the heating on, I work outdoors so don’t seem to feel the cold so much.

lol

In our house it's me and my skinny daughter who are now cold and want it on.

My 'bigger boned' wife and fat wobbly son are still walking around in the buff.

It's a dilemma with four of us in the house

They've just been discussing this on Test Match Special and the conversation has already started in our household.

My wife puts it off until as late as possible and makes me and the kids wear an extra layer. Personally, I'd have it on now as I feel the cold but it costs a bloody fortune.

So what do you do? Is there a specific date you switch it on and who decides when? There's also the psychological implications that the act can represent the beginning of winter and therefore people delay it as long as they can. And what temperature do you set it on? I've seen households range from 17-25 degrees but we settle on about 19.

Lets have a heated debate

As soon as I can thaw out. :colder:

I live on a boat, so not as well insulated as a house. I have been putting the central heating on for an hour in the mornining for a few days but once it starts to get cold the log burner is fired up and stays lit 24/7 untill spring.

Don't heat more; eat more.

I just spat out my cornflakes. Jeez..!!

I caught my wife sneakily putting the heating on last week.

I sneakily put it off again.

Mate of mine built his his own house and it’s super energy efficient with heat recovery systems/solar panels, etc. His energy bill is about 300 quid a year. I’m massively jealous.

Yehbut, how much did it cost him to build it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm massively jealous too and it IS the way forward, but such builds tend to be longer term investments, longer than most of us have life left so the simple maths mean most people (understandably) opt for paying more for our energy bills.

I was reading about a guy's project to live completely self-sufficient and off grid; it's a laudable ideal, one I wish we could all pursue, but it's not something you'd do to save money in the short term. I read somewhere that the return on solar panels for instance only kicked in, on average, after something like 20 years. Sadly, we're all pretty much forced into a short-term cost decision.

Agree totally. He didn’t build his house just for cheaper energy. It’s more of a happy by-product of a self-build.

I was looking at solar panels recently. Government have recently capped the return that you get, so it’s not really worth having them imo.

When its cold enough for the wife pretty much. I like it cool to sleep so in no rush but i hate waking up to a cold house or in the night to piss and freeze qmy bollocks off.

I have no idea how you sleep in a house thats colder than 18 celsius. Sure toss on some warmer clothes will help but your nose gets cold! Heavens no! Lol

Its a bit different here in canada though  because we seem to get extreme heat and extreme cold. There can also be large differences between day time and night time temps which doesnt help. Most people dont use baseboard heaters here but rather central heating and cooling and it can get expensive if you like it toasty in winter or very cool in summer.

It's not just the cold, but the dampness that can get in the house. So according to the different areas, obviously will be seeing people react differently.

Dampness from outside, can cause more illness than cooler or colder days of nights..it gets into bed linen or clothes hanging in cupboards.

Here in my location South of Mainz..wine growing area ,door to the rolling hills of the hunsruck, it's usually damper and cooler, going into late September.

So far,still unusually warm 25c+..

But even before this year...late October before we usually put on the central heating....we have no fireplace..Also the time I go and change to

Winter tyres...

October.. cut down bushes in the Garden, bring pots into the garage. No place for the car.!!

Pathetic! Leave those potted plants to die off! Lol

Yes we normally change to snow tires here when the average temperature drops  to 7 celsius or below which tends to be around mid november.  I hate the winter its so dull, depressing and feckin cold. The only goood thing is the crisp air but outside of that it can fcuk right off.

Mine is set around the flat racing calendar.

Winner crosses the line in the November Handicap at Doncaster - heating comes on.

Winner crosses the line in the Lincoln at Doncaster - heating comes off.

This method also gives me two attempts to pay for the winters heating...
