Stevosevic Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Should we be doing better? We've scored once (Maguire at Newcastle) in 100 corners. I think they said on the commentary yesterday that is the worst return in the league. Surprising considering Maddison's delivery is generally good
VLC86 Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Are we even Leicester if we arent shit at set pieces?
The Quick Brown Fox Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 I thought we'd be talking about having every player in our box when defending. I don't see the logic, we clear it and it comes straight back in. Madison's delivery isn't as great as people make out, quite often it's over hit and comes to nothing, very frustrating knowing that he can do better.

Vardy clears a hell of a lot of headers, that's why he's back. We've been massively better defending set pieces since we started this. It wasn't that long ago we looked like conceding at pretty much every corner or free kick into the box. A tick in Puel's box as we had been terrible defending them for some time.

siraaj_lcfc Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Maguire's only just got back from injury. Wilf and Wes always miss em, no surprise there. Our only aeriel threat is Maguire and Slim.....

Surprising considering Maddison's delivery is generally good If that stat is right then obviously we should be doing better. And it could as something as simple as mixing it up, take a short corner, go for the near post or sometimes the far post. These are really tactics that should be sorted on the training ground and knowing your opposition. Practice is vital like penalties but that's another story!!
siraaj_lcfc Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 We should do the England corner technique, i mean it seems to work well with SlabHead right?
FLAN Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 No point just winning headers they need to be attacked and we simply don’t do that
Cincinnati Fox Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Why do players not attack the ball at corners anymore?? walsh and Elliot need to get down the training ground for set pieces
Countryfox Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 If other teams had keepers like Kasper, the friendly flapping ghost, we might get a few more ...
Stadt Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 We were decent last season, poor this. Its not not really about height, it’s about a good delivery, creating a mismatch or finding space for a run. Chilwell for example is 5’10 but would easily out jump most players his height

Perhaps a bit more work on the training ground or a few ‘routines’ to be learnt and added.

Vacamion Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 A recent feature of our corners is we don't score, then lose possession and the other side has men over as they charge towards Kasper on a counter attack. Happened at least twice, yesterday and a couple of times during the week. If we not only keep failing to score but also keep conceding chances for the opposition, maybe we should stop trying to win corners.
CosbehFox Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Just remember the past two PL seasons have come in with a corner goal completion rate of 3%
Hammo Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 1 hour ago, Countryfox said: If other teams had keepers like Kasper, the friendly flapping ghost, we might get a few more ... Very true. Kasper is a hell of a shot stopper but his consistent failure to command his six-yard box at corners - and indeed crosses in open play - has become a real concern. Ever since that costly flap in the FA Cup v Chelsea, he seems to have lost confidence in that part of his game.
Phube Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 I remember under MON you always felt we’d score from a corner... now you just hope we don’t get a break on us...
Collymore Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 I know Madders has a reputation of being a good dead ball specialist but he just doesn't appear to be able to self evaluate how ineffective his set pieces can be sometimes and nobody wants to take responsibility to tell him how crap they are at times. He seems to have this chip on his shoulder where he thinks he's god's gift to set pieces and nobody else in the team is worthy of taking any. This was summed up with that free kick, where he postponed his substitution, as if he was going to conjure up something magical but ended up curling a standard ball to the back stick which any of the players could have pulled off. As for his corners, they're just so predictable. It's always the out swinger (that you fear that the lino is going to blow for going out of play) and the opposition defence know what's coming because he just repeats it over and over again. The stats don't lie, I think we need to mix it up more - Gray and Albrighton can take a decent corner if they're on the pitch so they should take it in turn if Madders is struggling... and do some work on the training ground FFS.
jayfox26 Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Don't remember us ever being good at corners since the days of Walsh and Elliott. We scored regularly from corners when them 2 played.

Countryfox Posted 23 December 2018 Posted 23 December 2018 Perhaps the odd short corner, then rammed in hard and low might be worth a try ... ball could go anywhere ... couldn’t be much worse than what we keep doing now.

Eh? He puts them smack in the middle of the box more times than not. It's up to the attacking players to get on the end of it. Doesn't help when you have a team of midgets other than the two centre backs. Like other than Maguire, who would you feel really confident getting on the end of a corner to score? I can't think of any others. Maybe Ndidi, maybe. Morgan doesn't offer that much on corners. Benkovic though...

If you put the ball in the same place each time it is very easy to defend, especially in the Premier League where there's so much data on hand to analyse beforehand. In the days of Walsh, Elliott and Taggart they'd be scoring headers from the back post, near post, 10 yards out, 6 yard box and sometimes they'd play a bit of head tennis and then nod it home. In the second video, Elliott scores 2 goals from corners in the same game and Guppy puts the ball in two different locations.
