Most underwhelming signing that turned out to be a revelation.

Hammond and Taylor-Fletcher, Pearson's elder statesmen signings were all very good. I wasn't impressed we signed those two but alongside Wasyl (who I was quite excited by, nasty bastard ex Poland international on a free ) proved to be exactly what we needed to go up. I suppose Phillips can be included too.

None of them were 'revelations' but important cogs in a brilliant squad.

Esteban Cambiasso.

Thought he'd only play a game or something and leave the club early.

However was an inspiration, and his goal against Man United at the King Power Stadium will always be remembered.

He wasn't an underwhelming signing was he lol

Ian Marshall, a beast in both boxes

Remember O’Neil saying how “doubtful “ became more popular the less he played

I can't see how that makes the signing any more underwhelming. I'd argue Vardy was a more underwhelming signing. Unknown foreign player vs. unknown non-league player.

I was moderately excited by Vardy because of his legendary scoring record, albeit at a much lower level. What rep did Mahrez come with?

Huth and Albrighton really don't belong in this discussion. Neither do unknowns like Mahrez or Kante.

Of course they've exceeded expectation but they were far from underwhelming signings.  Albrighton was brilliant when he came through at Villa as a youngster and was hyped as a future England player. He suffered injuries and fell out of favour at Villa but most of us thought it was a good signing and we'll worth taking the risk for a free as he was seen as somewhat unfulfilled potential which could be unlocked in the right side.

Huth was a proven very good Premier League defender for years who'd just suffered a big injury at Stoke and never managed to win his place back in their side even though many Stoke fans wanted him back.

Morgan, on the other hand, is a very good call, as one most of us saw as pointless and I remember many people moaning about Pearson spending £1mil on a 28 year old who had only really previously had one good season in the Championship.

Gary McAllister. Was a throw in with Ally Mauchlen from Motherwell - the pair for about £350K. In the end he probably outperformed a very good Mauchlen before being sold for £1m, later to play for Houllier at Liverpool.

£240,000 i think it was.. i think Mauchlen was valued at $60,000 and the rest McAllister

the 350k close to the time was our record signing! Steve Moran who pretty much was a flop i thought

for me it’s got to be  Mahrez for 400k

i mean that’s peanuts in today’s market... and what is a 400k singing from the french second division ever going to achieve?

Gerry Taggart.

Free from Bolton I think, everyone wondering why we have signed such a average player who probably won't get in the team. Ended up a regular in a mid table PL team, played in Europe and won the League Cup for us.

Remember thinking WTF? When we signed him:blush:

Mendy's worth a mention.

Nothing expected at all from him after close to 2 years of a no-show. Not our best player perhaps but has done very well since his return.

IMO he wasn't really much of an upgrade on De Laet. In fact in today's PL, De Laet would be the better suited to play WB. He was simply a better defender and one of the smaller reasons that we won the Premier league.

I do like the way he keeps getting discarded and fighting back though.

Probably fair, although I really under-estimated how well he could defend. I'd have to throw Morgan into this too - totally exceeded any expectations I had when we signed him.

What!? De Laet wasn’t great at all for us. Couldn’t cross and cost us goals all the time. He wasn’t very good at PL level which was why Simpson came in, and Albrighton the season before.

The only ones I’ve nodded my head when reading this thread were Cottee and Ranieri

Cottee - in Malaysia and was washed up and past it…. Always had a knack of finding the onion bag and was a great foil to Heskey (he must’ve loved playing with him…

Ranieri - Washed up and failed Greece manager who’d lost to the Pharoah islands - too old and felt a bit meh

Some I don’t agree with

Mahrez - 400k punt, had wired hair and mad skills - what’s not to like and be excited about

Vardy - banging turn on for fun and felt like he was an exciting punt for £1m

Yeah. I suppose I didn't see or hear much about Vardy before we signed him, but even if I had, I would have had doubts about whether he could handle the Championship.

Yep - he's my pick.  Looked like he should have been in Showaddywaddy, was actually a decent player.

Mahrez for me. Remember thinking that this guy has no chance to take Knockeart's place but he made it his own. Absolute gem of a signing - probably one of the best signings of all time.

Got to be the holy trinity of Kante, Vardy and Mahrez. The 3 of them signed for a combined £7m is laughable looking back now.

You’re not really getting the topic (although your definitely not the only one) all three of them had hype and interest, yes they were cheap but all came in with the fans thinking they could do something at the club and they were popular and viewed as good signings.

The best example, as others have already said, is undoubtedly Wes Morgan, hardly anyone was happy about signing him, but there are plenty others. Danny Simpson another for me viewed him as troublesome journeyman.

Mahrez for 400k is ridiculous.

Instrumental in the title winning side and then sold for an astonishing amount of money

Incredible business by the club

I can’t recollect Mahrez was anything under than underwhelming when we were linked with him as very few of us had much clue who he was and how good he could be?

It wasn’t like we knew we were signing a recognised, world class player.
