fleckneymike Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Who was the last 'meh' signing we made that turned out to be an absolute revelation? For me it has to be Brian Deane. Mired in a relegation dog fight, Dave Basset parachuted in much to supporter disgust (remember chants of 'you can stick your Harry Basset up your arse' during the Leeds League Cup match), the club sign journey men pro Brian Deane who'd struggled at Boro. Reading of his signing registered virtually no feelings at all, it warranted a paragraph in the nationals but all of a sudden we have a striker who can actually hold up the ball, link play, and frighten opposition defenders! 2 years after Heskey departed for Liverpool we had a player who could do the basics. Although we went down he was an absolute beast in the Championship.
Guest MattP Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Gerry Taggart. Free from Bolton I think, everyone wondering why we have signed such a average player who probably won't get in the team. Ended up a regular in a mid table PL team, played in Europe and won the League Cup for us.
Hitesh Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Surely Muzzy Izzet, he came in an an unknown on loan whilst we were trying to secure a play off place. The rest is history. Otherwise more recently, I'd say Kante. No one knew what he would be capable of and how his stature would compete in the Premier league.
Guest Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Gary McAllister. Was a throw in with Ally Mauchlen from Motherwell - the pair for about £350K. In the end he probably outperformed a very good Mauchlen before being sold for £1m, later to play for Houllier at Liverpool.
Danizen Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 I saw GTF as an unnecessary, unfit luxury player but I'll gladly admit I was wrong. Seeing him turn players half the size of him, effortlessly like some fat, bald Messi was something I'll never forget as a Leicester fan.
st albans fox Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Ghezzal .......... whoops, went too early ?
shen Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 I suppose most of our successful signings fall under this category. Trickier to think of hyped signings that delivered as hoped.

bovril Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Taggart and Marshall are good shouts both. I remember thinking Taggart was awful when we signed him but turned out to be a really important player in our cup winning team.
Alf Bentley Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 1 minute ago, Kitchandro said: Wes. Was just about to say that..... Competent but apparently limited centre-back, about 28, who'd spent the past decade in the bottom half of the Championship with Forest......but went on to captain us to Championship & PL titles.
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Got to be the holy trinity of Kante, Vardy and Mahrez. The 3 of them signed for a combined £7m is laughable looking back now.
rn9013 Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Surely has to be Albrighton. Villa reject on a free. Can’t say any of us were that excited about signing him, but he’s turned out to be an incredible signing. Scored our first ever champions league goal in the history of our club to name one of his legendary achievements.
Sir Shep Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Not quite underwhelming, more of a WTF, David Speedie, diving like tyke came good for us, sort of!

Almost all the others were known good players to an extent or, like muzzy, were struggling to get first team football.
Collymore Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Despite the fact the only thing he ever did was score goals...
