urban.spaceman Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Can Musa be considered poor value for money considering we eventually made a profit on him?

It was his 2nd season he was shit. He doesn't belong in this discussion alongside Silva, Musa or Iheanacho, who were always shit. Actually IMO Akinbiyi is up there for debate because he was the signing that ultimately got us relegated. We’d lost Heskey and Cottee was too old. Akinbiyi was our record signing and we needed him to bang them in. He couldn’t . It wasn’t all his fault but a better signing there would have made a huge difference IMO. But overall it’s got to be Silva. It all conspired against him and he’s clearly not a poor player given his pedigree. Had Shakespeare been in charge he would have played far more often I sure. But he’s been a total flop for big money.
Tielemans63 Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 From a purely financial point of view it has to be Silva. At least Slimani scored a few goals for us and presumably we've received loan fees for him. Silva cost £25m plus around £80k a week in wages for precious little return. If he does leave there's a good chance we'll still be paying him.

I’d probably retract my earlier comment based on that. Certainly one of the worst signings in my opinion, but maybe not such poor value.
Dorkingfox Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Dennis wise, Nicky Mohan, Beckford, Brian Carey, there are so many bad signings
Foxxed Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Slimani did more for the club than Silva's sod all. We played Slimani though so it's not really a fair comparison.
Nick Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 I would plump for the only player ever to have the words ‘Bad Buy’ inserted in to the middle of his surname and in common usage.
49er Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Tommy English. No fee involved but he was swapped for Melrose. Stepped down to Division Two with a record of being a young goalscorer in the top flight. Complete disaster - ended up playing left midfield
Poznan34 Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 41 minutes ago, Sampson said: Slimami, Iheanacho, Musa or Silva - take your pick. All dreadful and some of our record signings. If we're honest, looking down out list of most expensive signings, most have been utteely dreadful signings. Harsh to lump Iheanacho in with that lot. He's still playing regularly, far from a lost cause yet.
Blue ROI Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 You could make a case for Slimani. 30 million buy and our title winnng side cost 22 million! That said if we didnt have him in 2016/17 we might have been back in the championship the following year. He was doing better than Vardy for a lot of that season. Silva though for the money we spent has to be at the top of the list. Just a disaster for us.
Tielemans63 Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Gokhan Inler was pretty shit value. He'd have been on a wedge too.
Hammo Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Akinbiyi, no question. Adrien Silva has not been given a fair crack of the whip. Akinbiyi, on the other hand, was given way too many cracks of the whip by that idiot Peter Taylor, who should have dropped him but kept nonsensically and unforgivably persevering with him because he had spent a club record £5m on a complete dud and wanted to prove everyone wrong - when all his blind stubbornness did was slowly destroy Martin O'Neill's legacy.... and ultimately send the club down.

Got a lot to answer for Taylor, he was a cretin.
FoxInTheBirstallBox Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 SLIMANI didn't want to be here, useless, ugly, horrible attitude and to be the worst signing for 3 clubs in a row (So far) is some record
Guest Bob Hazels shorts Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Benalouane by a country mile. 17 league appearances over 4 years most of which when we were desperate or feeling charitable. A few cup games. Reported 6m buy and 40k wages 800k ++ a league game!! + walks away a free agent. Islam Slimani will overtake him depending if we manage to sell him. Akinbiyi in relative terms was horrendous but Trevor Francis at Palace bought him for 2.2m knowing how bad he was. Ghezzal appears to only move on frees but we pay 12m for him. Time will tell.
evil jack Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Akinbyi was our record signing and couldn't even trap the ball. His 1st touch was non existent. We had quite a lot of money from the sale of Heskey, and Taylor pissed it all up the wall.
fazzyfox Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 For what we invested in him, Matt Mills needed to be reliable, rock solid, inspirational and a leader, another Steve Walsh. Aside from elbowing opponents he came nowhere near and I always felt he had tickets on himself as something he wasn't and a real attitude problem. Akinbiyi, agree, that was a crucial decision to get right and we made a poor choice. Silva - For fee and wages we've had so little return, only Mendys return and maintaining of fitness has papered over how a player surely intended for the first team can't make the bench. Marshall (from Norwich), another Taylor signing who would make mistake after mistake but still be selected the following week. I think Taylor knew him from the England U21's ) as with Scowcroft) but he was a liability.
jayfox26 Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 John Pantsil. Think he was a freebie but he would have earned a decent wage and i dont remember him making a single appearance for us. But Silva is a shout given his age, price, wages and lack of contribution.
