Jay Moriarity. Surfer from the California and a legend in his field. Sadly died free diving in 2001. Plenty of stuff on YouTube and even a film about out him called Chasing Mavericks

That French bloke who climbs up the outside of skyscrapers without any safety equipment seems like a cool (if not slightly clinically insane) guy

People who think they are cool are uncool. Those who think they are uncool are cool.

I am neither.

Transcool?

Excluding all of us as we're obviously the coolest who are some of the most incredible people alive?

The reason I ask is I've just watched The Dawn Wall on Netflix about a free climber named Tommy Caldwell who conquered a  route on Yosemite that had never been attempted. His back story is incredible as well.

When climbing with friends in Kyrgyzstan they were captured by rebels and made to walk for days without food and water in the mountains. One day they were left with just one rebel and Tommy caught him by surprise and pushed him off of a cliff.

He also cut one of his fingers off in a panel saw accident and was told he'd never be able to climb again but still managed to go on to achieve one of the biggest feats in climbing history.

The documentary led me to YouTube about free climbing which took me to a guy called Alex Honnold who achieved a 3,000 free solo (no ropes or support) climb of another El Cap (Yosemite) route

Totally in awe of these superhumans who look to push the boundaries of what is possible in life

I've been watching loads of climbing stuff about Honnold recently but I only got round to watching the Doc itself last night. It's one of the most intense things I've ever seen.

It's just phenomenal. Every time I think about it it just blows my mind on an even greater level than last time. It is beyond words really, but to my mind it's the biggest feat of athleticism/sport in human history. The personal side of the doc is really revealing/interesting too, I've seen lots of interviews with Honnold lately but nothing has come close in terms of showing his journey.

The Dawn Wall was ace too. Don't forget Tommy did that with his colleague Kevin Jorgenson

I'm glad somebody finds it as fascinating and awe inspiring as I do. Some people I've spoken to about it are a bit 'I'm not really into that sort of thing'

I've never really considered watching stuff about climbing before the Dawn wall but since them I'm watching loads on YouTube etc.

And yes I should've mentioned Jorgensen. Incredible show of decency and friendship from Tommy to wait for Kevin to complete that pitch

As for Honnold's achievement, Caldwell got it spot on.

"It's like competing at Olympic level and getting gold and if you don't you die"

I've never done any climbing other than with cubs/at school but it's incredible to watch.

There's another netflix doc called Valley Uprising, it's all about the history of climbing in Yosemites and both Alex and Tommy are in it. Well worth a watch!

Yup, I can't imagine what they were both going through at that point, especially with all the media involved.

You need to change your user name to Dangerous Ostrich, DT. ;)

Apparently, ostriches can be pretty dangerous if you look at them the wrong way. Though in Africa hippos are the animals that kill most humans, I read.

Whereas tigers don't kill anyone at all in Africa.....not dangerous at all.

Thought it wasn't cool that he died, there was a cool fact associated with the singer's death.

Bobby Farrell (Boney M singer), who sang "Ra-Ra-Rasputin" died in St. Petersburg, the same city where Rasputin died....and on the anniversary of Rasputin's death.

He was from the Dutch West Indies and didn't live in Russia......spooky!

Hmm.

That may be true of large animals, Alf, but I'm pretty sure snakebite accounts for more deaths than any other; and if we count indirect causes of death, then the mosquito is the cause of something like half a million deaths by malaria. :D

Unfortunately, bacteria is basically the biggest killer here, with them causing cholera and dysentery. Malaria is just after shitting oneself to death.

Car accidents are also really really high. I've opted to take a tiny plane for a little ride this weekend, rather than a 14 hour round trip in the car on crap roads. I've been on smaller planes, but still quite worried. Fortunately, my arse is so puckered it is keeping in any runny turds I am suffering from. Just like the last time we went camping and a hippo was 10ft away from the tent grazing...

I thought the Boney M singers were all white Germans and they just had Caribbean mimers masquerading as the band for marketing reasons.

(I may be thinking of another band though).

Edit: Yeah - apparently this is what the actual lead singer of Boney M looks like -

I think you're right about that - at least on the recordings. I remember reading that. The "singer" (Bobby Farrell) was a professional dancer, I believe.

Presumably, he went on to perform live as that's what he was doing when he died in St. Petersburg - had a heart attack in his hotel room during a tour performing in Russia a few years back.

Whether they performed live at the time, I don't know....

You are thinking of Milli Vanilli.
