0_LM-CIRCUS-JUNE1.jpg

This photograph from our archive, above, gives food for thought some 45 years after it was taken.

And it certainly isn’t something we would be likely to see in these more enlightened times.

It shows Leicester City stars, from left, Alan Birchenall, Steve Earle and Keith Weller, posing on circus elephants back in 1974.

We have no further information about the picture so do not know the name of the circus or the location of the Big Top but we assume the photo was taken to promote the visit of a circus to the city.

Circuses with animals were hugely popular in the decades before and after the Second World War and, when a circus came to town, all sorts of promotional events were usually arranged to advertise its presence and encourage visitors to go along.

It was not uncommon for some of the animals, particularly elephants, to be paraded through a town’s streets to herald the arrival of the circus.

What a day! What an honour to be part of the celebration!

Brilliant. One of my best away days. I was in a tiny stand alongside the pitch- almost hit your head on the ceiling when you jumped up. Seemed like there were Leicester fans all around the ground.

Ah, Weller. Happy days. I can’t remember why Walters didn’t progress after such a sensational game.

That is Grandby Halls I'm pretty sure the circus used to use it when it came and invited children from LRI on certain occasions for free
