It’s not from people who don’t understand football, just because they have a different opinion to you. Barnes deserved the criticism but played well today again so deserves praise.

It’s got nothing to do with differing opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What I don’t agree with is people  taking aim at somebody who clearly was the only threat in our team when we had injuries and poor form was our only player with the ability to change a game. He had the weight of the whole team on his shoulders and should’ve been supported instead of hammered. That to me shows complete lack of football knowledge. I’m ok with people criticising but not in the way in which I saw on here.

So nice to read that people aren’t calling Barnes shite anymore.

He isn’t shite. He’s an inconsistent young player who can be almost unplayable on his day and suffers badly in a team low on confidence.
Definitely one to keep

An out and out winger on the opposite flank was always going to make him better.

More balanced and less predictable.

I said weeks ago that Barnes would benefit from a similar player on the right.

He’s 25 years old. That isn’t young. Not for a footballer.

Excellent. Unsurprisingly with an actual left back and right winger in the team as well as Maddison back he looks much better. His two finishes were those of a player who's had a burden lifted. Like everyone else he also looks like he's got a newfound energy and fight - I've been very critical of his work rate but he did a great job together with Kristiansen and it was nice to hear Rodgers specifically praising him for that after the game.

I've no problem with people criticising him when he plays poorly - when he's bad he's often very, very bad - but I do wonder about the standards he's held to sometimes. Stuff like "fraud", "Championship player" and 6 goals in 24 being an "appalling" return. Look at the wingers (or wide forwards or whatever you want to call him) who regularly produce more than he does and then ask yourself how readily we can realistically attract or afford that calibre of player.

It isn't that old either.

Realistically, he's 2 or 3 years away from his peak.

It's a tough position to play. As I've said so many times, wingers are hot and cold, even the best of them.

We were so one dimensional with Barnes being our only natural wide man.

Now we have another, the opposition have to worry about both flanks, not just one.

And I've also said before, does Barnes need the team to play well to be able to play well?

If we have confidence and are firing, he thrives. If we're shit and looking for a spark, it won't come from Harvey. He feeds off other people and confidence.

Thing is, the best players are peaking so much later now that we could see similar here (might have already peaked).

Finishing is top drawer and in both of the last 2 games, his defensive output and work rate have been much improved.

Agree. But he’s certainly not in the young category, else he’d still be eligible to play age group internationals.

Yeah, I agree with you too, but he certainly still has time and potential to improve.

Give the guy confidence and I think his potential is limitless.

As Tim Vickery says on many occasions, when the collective balance is right, the stars shine. I think that saying rings even truer if the star is a winger. Fair play to Barnes, what a performance today.

He was not as bad as most are making out on here. Proper scapegoat Harvey has become it seems.

Only Rashford and Almiron have more goals as wingers this season than Barnes btw.

Never write him off.

Having Kristiansen behind him, and Madders operating in similar spaces to him is actually freeing up him up.

With those two distracting opponents on that side of the pitch, it’s stopping Harvey being doubled up on and ultimately becoming too predictable.

Long may it continue.

Felt sorry for Barnes goal that was disallowed compared to the Brentford equaliser he has miles onside and the goal should have stood, VAR is so inconsistent and they seem to make it up as they go along ruining the game where it was bought in to cut out the mistakes & cheating but it’s only making it worse !

I’m one of his biggest critics, mainly due to his lack of conviction in many games.  Yesterday much better but still makes so many ooor decisions in games. I don’t think he will elevate his game to play at a higher level because of his lack of awareness in big moments

Kristiansen has clearly made a massive differance. Watch Barnes play when Thomas was behind him. How many times did we see Barnes run at the defender 1 on 1? It was almost every time.

Look at the last two games. Watch what happens EVERY TIME Barnes touches the ball. Victor starts sprinting to go beyond him. It's never 1 on 1 because VK is always there which is even more impressive when you consider we are now moving the ball quicker and Kristiansen has less time to make that run than Thomas did when we were playing a slower possession based game.

And I think that might have made a differance to Barnes' defensive commitment. He's sees how hard VK is working to help him so is more likely to to the same for him.

Shut up Bert

He’s young compared to me or Zlatan

👍
