Do You Collect Anything?

The wife has a casual collection of these commemorative 50 pence pieces. I'm sick of them just laying about, so I went online to get her a coin folder to store them in today.

It got me thinking about the things people collect, so I thought I'd ask on here. What do you collect? (NONE LEICESTER RELATED)

Another 50p collector here 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

I could have written that Rumble!

In a previous life I had a proper job and it was properly shit but antique dealing really is a piece of piss isn't it?

It really is much easier than I would have thought. Can be stressful at times if money is low but in general I love it. X

At the moment I seem to be collecting camping equipment.

I'm intrigued, Jon.

What is it you're planning?

Collecting is such an offensive concept, storing loads of useless things while others have nothing.

Week in Norfolk then a week in the lakes with the family.  Huge tent and all mod cons!

If they're useless things why does it matter?

my point is more that they are useless in a collection, but useful to someone who doesnt have

Och I don't know that much and I steer clear of most modern watches as some of the fakes are amazing. I tend to try and stick to 50/60s mechanical watches and earlier, including pocket watches. Also I'm not a high end dealer (anything from £10 to about £1000) so often the watches I buy and sell aren't ones that would be targeted for fakes. It is difficult though but I enjoy it. I used to work for an auction house so I have enough seen a lot of items even if I've not owned them which helps get a feel for fakes. I sell Victorian and Edwardian jewellery too which is easier to authenticate and other random collectables and Antiques. I'll never be rich but I make enough to get by and it's  better than a real job. :)

Fantastic!  My collection ranges from 60’s in to 70’s - I like a bit of colour and funk!  Will have to pop into your shop!

Modern fakes are deeply scary…. The accuracy you can achieve would have been unimaginable 10 years ago…. You can pay a fortune for the super fakes….

I do own one modern watch…. But, otherwise I avoid all the big brand collector nonsense it doesn’t interest me at all…

@murphy of the parish also deals in silver and antiques I understand….

I do understand your point…. We could all do with unburdening ourselves with ‘stuff’ especially when others could have make greater use of them…

Yeah the older I get (I'm only 30) the less I care about material things. You just realise how much shit you buy and don't actually use or need

lol I might suggest that Pokemon cards are useless no matter how they are used.

We only have so much disposable income.  Some people like to travel, or go on the piss or whatever and collectors like to accumulate tat.  It is generally spent on stuff we don't need, hence the term 'disposable', however unless you give yours away to the have-nots, a statement like that seems a bit hollow and sanctimonious.

I am not a collector myself, but it seems to me that it is all about the thrill of the chase.  It might as well be milk bottle tops to some people.  You chase the new thing and then straight away it becomes an old thing so you need to find the next new thing.  A bit of a pointless cycle.  I would question how much pleasure collectors actually get from their collections.

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believeto be beautiful. - William Morris

A great quote to really try and  understand and implement when attempting to de-clutter…. It is scary how much you can accumulate, but, I do rationalise and attempt to manage the amount we acquire….   My home isn’t sparse, but, neither is it full of crap and I continue to be far more judicious with what we bring into our home…

Teaching my 6 year old nephew how to play after he started collecting has probably been the highlight of me being an uncle so far. lol

I have some watches (Breitling, Rado, Seiko, Cartier) and some art.

I just bought some more paintings, the wife gave me the look. I need a place to put them. I think the artist will be worth something in future (Rodney Kingston, in case you care). The other art we have I don't think will appreciate as much (Natasha Evans et al).

I like the Rodney Kingston artwork MC ...   reminds me of Henderson Cisz ...   I had 4 of his when I lived in my previous house.  The largest one, which was of New York cabs, was at the top of the stairs and had a small spot on it that brought it to life ..   stunning.
