Apart from their recent triumphant Asda cup win, they've only won one league cup this century. And they still claim to be a 'big club' just because they are located in a huge fan catchment area, like Newcastle. oh this makes my day every time i hear it!!!!!!!!!!!!

shailen Posted 7 September 2019 Posted 7 September 2019 We would have got relegated back to league one with this man

Shit like that stays in your memory :| Sorry to hear that. I know Gary reasonably well and he's as sound as they come. Maybe he was having a very bad day although there's no excuse for that.

I was living in London at the time & remember how brilliant that Chelsea game was when we beat them to go top - but will always vividly remember coming up for the Derby game a few weeks later in October... We scraped past a poor Derby team 2-1. I think we were 4th place in the Premier League at that point - unbelievable for us as a club - and yet we were complaining about the performance and listening to the phone-in on the drive home, everyone was complaining about how we were playing. How could so many people be complaining about being 4th in the league? - Because we knew at that point the team and tactics under Peter Taylor weren't good enough and things could go badly wrong if things didn't change. My memory is that we were hanging on after that - turning out the odd good performance (actually looking back at the games, we did have some good results over that period), but we just didn't have any ideas in that Wycombe game - and as much of a shock as it was at the time, I think there were enough signs of it coming and it just became apparent he wasn't up to the job. I've vested interest in this season, mainly because I was in year six and it was my first "proper" season of memories, from watching the second leg of Red Star Belgrade on Channel 5 in my bedroom, getting excited when we signed Matt Jones and watching that we'd signed Lee Marshall from Norwich on Teletext (which I've definitely said before on here!) Anyway, wasn't it the case that the seeds set in as soon as November? We trashed Boro 3-0 away but we failed to win away after that, didn't we? Home was great, some stunning performances, especially the 3-1 against Leeds (My second footballing memory of being amazed by something, after Euro 2000.) There was the 2-0 at home to Liverpool, too? Which was the game that preceded the Wycombe one. We also knocked off Chelsea away 2-0 (in their last throws of Vialli) and Collymore scored. Wasn't this the time, also, when we stuffed Elliott and Izzet's bank balances with fat new contracts to ward off Celtic et al? £30k a week contracts or something? I remember so vividly cheering in my living room when we got drawn against Wycombe or Wimbledon. We were sorted. Dad got us tickets in the Carling. The relief when we levelled it up - I assumed we'd just go on and win, I never understood the struggle that day. Waited for the bus by old Liberty Shoes looking through the broken windows afterwards. Miserable game. And then it just spiralled, really. Loss after loss after loss. I'd love to know which specific straw broke that day, but it was already being held together with pritt stick, wasn't it? Was Taylor surviving on his England reputation at the time? Was there much unrest in the stands, or was it consensus to get a new season and things would be alright? When you think about how rapidly things disintegrated. Fourth in the league, QF of the FA Cup against a Division Two team. 12 months later you're pretty much relegated and facing financial abyss. I'd love to have individual season threads so people can dump their memories and discuss the turning points.

Nice post - but those memories of our slide into chaos are all just steps that led us to our greatest triumph. We’re on our way to something great again. No doubt we’ll slide again, but not for a while. Enjoy the ride - it’s life with all its joys and sadness, all its victories and defeats.

Nalis Posted 27 September 2019 Posted 27 September 2019 Crazy to think Arsenal last won the league 15 years ago, no wonder most of their younger fans are loving their winning goal against us in 2016, havent had much to cheer about in recent times.

It is absolute madness that we've won the league more recently than Man United (5 years), Arsenal (15) and Liverpool (29)
