yorkie1999 Posted 13 November 2019 Posted 13 November 2019 Wonder if she'll start on The Star Spangled Banner next. A poem whose verses do contain references to having no respect for slaves that were fighting for their freedom and was written by a slave owner who advised a president on how to "look after" his own plantation slaves.

Ah...that explains the Scottish reference: Field Marshal George Wade PC (1673 – 14 March 1748) was a British Army officer who served in the Nine Years' War, War of the Spanish Succession, Jacobite rising of 1715 and War of the Quadruple Alliance before leading the construction of barracks, bridges and proper roads in Scotland. He went on to be a military commander during the War of the Austrian Succession and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces during the Jacobite rising of 1745. That would make a good quiz question: "Who's the other person mentioned in the National Anthem, besides the Queen and God?".....Field Marshal George Wade, apparently
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 13 November 2019 Posted 13 November 2019 Can't wait to see the Police raid on the Albert Hall during next year's Last Night of the Proms.
Vacamion Posted 14 November 2019 Posted 14 November 2019 I'm a "Land Of Hope And Glory" man myself. Makes no bones about setting "the bounds" wider. And it's a cracking tune, an' all... Edited to add: It also reminds me of the end of It Ain't Half Hot Mum....

I can't say it's something I've actively thought about in the past and It doesn't realistically bother me either way, I don't think, though I would note that I can see where she is coming from. Yes it's just a song from centuries ago, but the connotations are questionable and if it were Americans singing about slavery 'because it's part of their history' then I'm sure a few eyebrows would be raised. It ties in quite closely with my thoughts on the Royals and some of the grandiose acts that go on in Parliament, e.g. Black Rod and the like, in that I'm not quite sure where I stand. Part of me quite likes the pompous nature of it all and that they've survived for centuries, and I love going to the cricket and just enjoying things like the hymns that are just quintessentially British, however I also can't see past how bizarre and ridiculous it all is. How Parliament can discuss serious and life changing topics after a ceremonial panto involving somebody that sounds like a questionable porn actor has paraded through the house is beyond me, and how a 90 odd year old woman can deliver a Queens speech about poverty and the like whilst sitting on a chair and wearing a hat that are worth more than a small nation is equally baffling. I think ultimately I am for 'moving on' and away from our questionable past, whilst acknowledging that it existed. Other countries have done so, but we seem desperate to hold on and that can be seen by some arguments in respect of Brexit and with the 'poppy fascism' debate. Just because some squirm at other people's accusations whom their own countries regions were rife with betrayal, racism, wiping out their neighbours, and not really their direct region/land of birth... Why oh why, should we consider we have a questionable past.. All lands have had Empire builders,civilisations,education-centers,sometimes in their past,oh and also shit on their own, just has much as empires abused, used, rampaged, lawfully pillaging( accordingly who had the say) Some of the biggest decryers come from lands, where after 1000s of years ,they are still murdering and suppressing their own..!!! Oh! our history had nothing to do with being the first caring, humane Empire....Like Greeks and Romans,we documented our history..good and bad. Africa,Asian,Americas great civilisations that equalled anything in Egypt, and maybe later European Empires.....We know existed, but got lost on the camels-back of history & dried out documentated scrolls... Of course British Empire building, stole people's lives & Souls, and shattered cultures...the same ones, where the local indigenous themselves had tread over others..It was either us to grab power,or be ourselves now under the French,Spanish,Dutch etc etc yoke and flags..The Portugese far more advanced than ourselves became our friends and hearty and longest allies.. African,Persian,Indian,Chinese,Japanese, folk had been squabbling within and over their own boundaries..Tribal,Caste,racism,rife today as for a thousand years. Slavery, splitting selling families off, still the same slave routes fought over today. Bastards are and always has been covered from all shades, colours and pigament of skin..Outside their known uneducated sphere, but alot worse within their own...!! .

Footballwipe Posted 14 November 2019 Posted 14 November 2019 Top work Foxestalk, lured in by the GMB bait of giving ridiculous, niche views the time of day. ITV gave up any credibility when they had flat earthers on This Morning.

To anyone with a brain it's become clear that there are just two genders, then about 98 different types of gay person.
