Well this all seems to be going much as I expected. Can’t wait for burning of the books.

The nazi’s did that.... famously in Berlin. What ensued was hardly world peace.

I’m pretty sure if you asked members of the black lives matter movement. They’re not going to be bothered about a T.V show in the 70’s about the Germans...... my grandad found it hilarious, and his dad was an SS soldier.

I don't get it, some of my favourite comedy's banished for being racist and i'll be honest and say I don't get why.

I support black lives matter, I think attitudes within the world do need to change. I thought the Colton statue being torn down was a landmark moment.

But attacking comedy, freedom of expression, in a genre where their really shouldn't be any limits. The point of the demonstrations has been lost and now I'm confused about the change people were actually seeking.

I thought we were looking for real life change, and instead, there's a few less comedy's on Netflix now.

Way to go everyone.

I have to say it's always seemed odd to me that modern shows get away with using blackface, including Little Britain and IASIP, both programmes that I love and could spend hours quoting.

I am genuinely confused by the mighty boosh though, the only character I can think it would be for is the hitchhiker who unless I'm being dense isn't supposed to be a caricature of any black people.

Where does this leave tropic thunder though?  That's the one case of straight-up blackface which has always been given a free pass because of how it's written into the script, it's always been understood to not really be irl blackface but do those rules still apply?

Until the government step in and actually make a statement the tearing of things down will continue. Like it was said yesterday, start petitions and take it to the top, mob culture long term will not change anything. No matter what your point is. We don’t live in such a world anymore where anarchists win the wars, because the harder they fight, the harder the resistance becomes. So far I have been quite happy about the removing of statues of those linked to slavery and other human atrocities that outweighs their good.

You have to ask, where does all of this stop? Once the statues have topped what next? The sacking of London? If we’re not careful we will de-evolve into a medieval society running around London with pitch forks and torches setting ablaze to everything.

The point of the movement will be lost if it descends into thuggery and rioting. Some people may think it’s the answer, dragging those they deem responsible by their feet through the streets, however it won’t. The world has changed, we should learn from history but not let it be repeated. I know I keep harping on about it, but it’s a subject close to my heart but the Nazi’s attempted to erase history too, and their cause was nothing but to create a fascist empire.

No matter the cause the erasure of history if wrong (and impossible) for once these figures have gone, who is there to learn from? No one. You can only move forward if you accept past truths and apply them to future goals to create a better outcome.

The UK has come a long way since separate sides of the bus, yes, it is frankly disgusting that we haven’t gone all the way yet, but life if a complex thing and going into things two footed will result in a negative outcome. Hopefully what this does is makes the government invest time into changing the statistics. Why is I’d statistically more likely for a member of the black community to be born into poverty, why are members of the black community underrepresented in many areas of the country and why is it that crime rates are likely to be higher in areas where black communities live.

There are problems that HAVE to be addressed, education is massively important, if we can want to make strides forward. We really shouldn’t be in this state in the 21st century but here we are..... we now must deal with it and must change.

That was my point. I think my sarcasm may not have made the grade.

I got it, I was contributing to your line. Like you say, some people are very selective about what history they’re referencing. But when you look at it simply, the good and the evil often have similar methods, but do the results always differ?

As usual it's turned into a competition in the media, celebrity and sports industries to show who cares the most. Whether that is celebrities making videos, TV companies removing episodes that no-one has asked them too and even football clubs plastering their shirts with messages.

Like I said yesterday. As per it turns into a pissing contest. It’s just deviating away from the point.

Yes.

And that's frustrating because the point is extremely important. And those who don't want it addressed are getting exactly what they want right now.

There always have to be some limits ....

the problem now is that no one knows where they start and finish ..... ‘thin end of the wedge’ ‘baby and bath water’ ..... I told my girls during our Saturday eve colston statue debate that things like this would happen and they are looking at me now like I’m Nostradamus!!   Experience .... can’t beat it !

Exactly. Unless you’re a far right bell piece, everyone wants this addressing. And the media arse covering, making videos with celebrities looking sad... “oo look at us and how sorry we are” is bollocks. Literally achieve  nothing.

What we need is government officials to step up, Boris needs to do a lot more than say “we’re not a racist country, but there’s a long way to go”. Government officials need to do more, need to put more effort in, need to show the movement that they give a shit. Because at the moment, we haven’t seen that, and the protests will continue.

The Germans episode of Fawlty Towers contains a discussion between Basil and The Major in which The Major uses not one but two words (one beginning with N and one beginning with W) which are now universally agreed to be completely unacceptable.

It has been temporarily withdrawn whilst its decided how to deal with this, which is not in any way unreasonable. It might have been at the time but it is absolutely not ok to broadcast that language now. It's nobody's fault and nobody is going to prison for it. That particular passage in the episode is not central to the plot and could be sympathetically edited without compromising the rest of the episode. It was not withdrawn because of mentions of WW2 or Adolf Hitler.

Me and a mate have been spamming the statue campaign all day.

Do you really think that's helping anything?

Another one who is angry at cancel culture yet doing the exact same thing.

Did it really? Granted I have not watched it for years and years so can't remember all of it!

My favourite comedian would disagree. So would one of my favourite rappers.

If we're just going with a blanket ban of words then you're going to struggle for any sort of real change.

Like everything, the context surrounding its use is important. Probably now more than ever.

Yes and the context in which it used in this episode is not acceptable by today's standards.

If we’re going to remove from view anything that is deemed to be ‘not acceptable by today’s standards’, the government will need to form a new department to organise all the book burnings.

We're really not.

Why not? The major is a racist character using racist language. The show was first aired some 40 odd years ago when the language was common (and its still far too common today).

What turns it from having a warning pre-airing to just being removed from history?
