Premier League's top 7 teams will not be in next season's League Cup

Think they should just scrap it completely for a season or set up a new Zenith Data style tournament for those not in Europe for one season only. Otherwise the League Cup win will probably be tainted.

This should be the norm.

Glad they've taken this decision regardless for next season as the fixture list would be just so crammed, especially if CL/EL is not going to be reduced in number either.

The League Cup has been reduced in quality as bigger clubs have bigger squads and it's lost its glamour to be classed as a trophy worth winning by such clubs. Look at the likes of Arsenal, Utd, City, Liverpool and the kind of squads they put in in the early rounds.

It's a great opportunity for a club not involved in Europe to remain competitive in this competition though.

If it does become more of a permanent thing, does that mean clubs in that new 3rd European competition will be exempt too? There could be up to 9 or 10 PL clubs in Europe by that stage so wonder if it's best, in future, to make this just an EFL-club tournament?

Or if they want PL clubs to stick with it and compete, the incentives have to be higher. Right now the incentive to finish just one place higher in the PL is enough to prioritise that over the League Cup.

If that’s the decision, it shouldn’t have a European qualifying spot. Ourselves, Wolves and Sheff Utd all gatecrashing the top seven would love a European spot available to them without the ‘big’ cartel competing for it

As it stands the new 3rd European Competition doesn’t change the number of entries into Europe. We just have less clubs in the Europa League

So if they don’t take part, one of the 7 will not be able to qualify for Europe the following season.

unless one of the teams above them also win the FA cup, or are Man City.

Either way, we only get 7 places in Europe and one of those places goes to the League Cup winners.

If these 7 don’t enter then one of the 7 won’t be able to get a spot in Europe the following season.

I'd be pretty peeved if we finish outside of the top 7 next season and missed this opportunity of a cup. Makes sense for the likes of Man City, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool and perhaps Spurs too, but less so for ourselves, Wolves and Sheff Utd.

Wolves haven't won a cup since 1980 and Sheffield United haven't won anything in almost a century. I'm not sure a run in the Europa League would make up for that, particularly for Sheff Utd, assuming they make the top 7.

Ok so by that reckoning, (man city ban aside) unless the FA cup goes to a top 4 side, only the top 5 will get into Europe, whereas this season, if the ban sticks, and one of the final top 6 wins the FA cup, eighth place will be good enough for Europa slot.

Kind of makes a mockery of the whole thing. if a place goes to the cup winners, then in my opinion, if they qualift through league position, then the place should go to the runner up in the cup, but that would not fit with the TV/FA/Eufa agenda as at least on or more of their big money attractions would have to miss out. Can you imagine the meltdown if ourselves, Wolves, Sheff utd, for example nabbed three of the places, and a couple of other non fashionable teams won the cups. They would be trying to come up with all sorts of formulae to stop it happening.

I was thinking to myself the other day, they ought to exclude all the premier league teams and make it a British Cup. Have qualifying rounds and make the last 16 or last 8 England versus Scotland. Just as a one off to make it something different.

Ive been thinking this for a while as well but a full time transformation of the league cup into an open British leagues cup.. Would be a great cup to have a proper competitive British games against the likes of Rangers or Celtic and the sponsorship this would bring in would turn the old league cup into maybe something better than the FA Cup.

What if one of the remaining smaller teams (Norwich, Newcastle or Arsenal) wins the FA Cup and therefore 7th doesn't get Europe?

Arsenal :D

Problem is high chance Celtic and Rangers are in the European competitions as well this season, so can't play the competition. Biggest fixture you'd get based on this seasons teams would be Leeds/Forest v Aberdeen or one of the Edinburgh clubs.

It's hardly the most attractive fixture.

Agree with what has been said before - sensible decision for next season but shouldn’t be the norm.

Still seething at not making the final this year! Only blot on Rodgers copy book although I felt it was more down to a collective sh*ting of our pants plus an inspired goalkeeper rather than a massive tactical failure.
