RIP Jack Charlton,  he was before my time so I am sure other posters are able to summarise him concisely than I can but from sound of it,  Jackie has made significant contribution to football beyond World Cup win and should be recognised for it.    Thoughts goes to his family and friends.

He is a legend in ireland on equal footing to the pope !

Never been to a major tournament till he came along and he got them three !

remember Scotland had never progressed  beyond the group stages yet Charlton got them out of the groups 3 times , Inc twice in World Cup finals and  to get them to the 1/4 finals of Italia90 Was a huge achievement.

interesting side story I heard about Italia90, that the morning after losing the 1/4 final to Italy Big Jack heard that Harry Redknapp was very very poorly in hospital after a horror crash on his way to his hotel after the Ireland v Italy match , Charlton Went to the hospital, had been given a medal by the Pope while in Rome at the hospital got a nurse to put the medal under Redknapps (who was in a coma) pillow,  I heard Harry telling the story at an after dinner at Cheltenham races he Told us his wallet, watch rings everything was robbed off him but the the Medal wasn’t, he travelled north when he was well enough and returned it to Jack.

what a man Big Jack was

Loved in Ireland, England and at Leeds, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday. An iconic figure, a shame lots of us never saw him play.

RIP Jack.

That early 90's Ireland squad seemed more like a cultural happening than a football team. One of the greats, and an important figure from when I was growing up and getting into football. He will be missed.

He knew football, cared about football, one of the hard characters, wouldnt suffer fools..

But unlike many,he could Close the game out of his mind...Then return refreshed...

He wouldnt understand the players with struggling teams ,just Not turning up..!!!

Earn your pay & reputation no matter at what Level your playing ....was his mantra...

Read this morning about when he reconciled with Bobby at the Sports  personality of the year awards in 2008 ...  I remember seeing it ...  he gave Bobby his lifetime achievement award and after embracing him, said ..   “Bobby Charlton is the greatest player I’ve ever seen. And he’s my brother”.   Brought a tear to my eye.

P.S. Their feud had lasted years and was allegedly to do with Bobbys wife’s influence on him ....    take heed Harry and Wills ....

Extraordinary to read that he made his Leeds debut in 1953 - and then had his football career on hold for 2 years due to national service.

Yet, as a primary school kid, I can remember him as a regular in Revie's Leeds machine of the early 70s, despite him being an "old man" in the 1966 England team.

I even saw him play live once (1971). I imagine that a few posters who are a bit older than me will have seen him play at Filbert St.

I then remember him as a characterful, opinionated pundit on TV (was it 1974 or 1978 World Cups or both?) and even doing a fishing programme - and as a pretty successful manager at Boro and Wednesday from the mid-70s to mid-80s.

I'd completely forgotten that he also had a year managing Newcastle (84-85) when Waddle & Beardsley were young players - and didn't even know that he gave Gazza his 1st team debut at 17.

Just as he wasn't always pretty as a player, he was never known for pretty football as a manager: tight defence, good organisation, physicality, plenty of direct play.

But he was pretty successful at club level and his achievements as Ireland manager really bear repeating:

Before him, Ireland had never qualified for the finals of any World Cup/Euros. Under him, they qualified for 2 World Cups and 1 Euros (out of 4 tournaments) - and over-achieved at all of them, bringing joy and pride to many in Ireland (I should know, as I went to the 1988 Euros with an English mate & we stayed with Irish mates of his Irish flatmate who were working in Germany - including after we'd been in opposite ends of the ground for Ireland 1 England 0).

Charlton also always seemed like a bloke who'd have been great company, if you knew him - definitely passed the "would you enjoy a few pints with this person" test.

You might not have agreed with him on football or anything else, but he'd have had interesting, entertaining opinions, seemed warm-hearted and would have enjoyed a laugh. Sad to lose you, Jack!

A few snippets from Wikipedia.....

"At the age of 15 he was offered a trial at Leeds United, where his uncle Jim was left back, but turned it down and instead joined his father in the mines. He worked in the mines for a short time but handed in his notice after finding out just how difficult and unpleasant it was to work deep underground. He applied to join the police and reconsidered the offer from Leeds United. His trial game for Leeds clashed with his police interview, and Charlton chose to play in the game".

"Charlton caused controversy early in the 70-71 season as he said he'd once had a "little black book" of names of players whom he intended to hurt or exact some form of revenge upon during his playing days. He was tried by the Football Association and was found not guilty of any wrongdoing after arguing that the press had misquoted him. He admitted that though he never actually had a book of names he had a short list of names in his head of players who had made nasty tackles on him and that he intended to put in a hard but fair challenge on those players if he got the opportunity in the course of a game".

"In March 1984, Charlton agreed to manage Middlesbrough until the end of the season to help steer the club away from the Second Division relegation zone. He was unpaid except for expenses and only took the job as a favour to his friend Mike McCullagh, who was the club's chairman. Middlesbrough ended the season in 17th place".

"At the beginning of the 1984–85 season Gascoigne was warned by Charlton about his junk food. He was given 2 weeks to lose the weight. Gascoigne then trained for ten days wrapped in a black bag to lose his excess weight. Not long after though, Gascoigne would win the captaincy of the youth team; and at the end of the season Gascoigne, along with his teammates, would ironically be fed a burger on the M1 by Jack Charlton after winning FA Youth Cup Final at Watford His teammate and friend Joe Allon claims it was probably the 1984–85 season that made Gascoigne "Gazza", and also states the 1984–85 season was the season that put him onto the road to Italia 90".

"At the age of 18 Gascoigne signed a two-year £120 a week contract at Newcastle [...] One worry Charlton had about Gascoigne was his generosity. Charlton noted Gascoigne was the type of lad who was "liable to buy drinks all round." [...] Charlton arranged that around half of Gascoigne's wage be paid into a bank account for him to collect in a lump sum at the end of his first contract".

Charlton's celebrations after the 1966 World Cup win.....https://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/472489.world-cup-winners-night-in-e11/ lol

"England defender Jack Charlton ended up in Leytonstone following the 4-2 win over West Germany at Wembley. A book, Jack and Bobby by Leo McKinstry, describes how Charlton left the official celebrations for a night's revelry in London. Along with a friend, Jimmy Mossop, Charlton caught a taxi to the Astor club in the West End. "The whole place was one big party," Charlton recalled. "I got so drunk I don't remember much about it after that except that Jimmy and I woke up in some house in Leytonstone, on the floor and settee. "The house belonged to a lad called Lenny and his wife. The next morning I went down to the garden and a woman popped her head over the wall and said 'Hello Jackie'."I could not believe it. It was one our neighbours from Ashington (Charlton's hometown in County Durham) - Mrs Mather. "She was visiting relatives who lived next door. 'How are you going Jackie?' she asked a little suspiciously".

Jack's impact on Irish Culture let alone Football is just colossal.

As others have said we never qualified for a major tournament until 1988. I just missed out on 88 and 'that' win but despite not playing anywhere near as well Italia 90 is one of the country's high points.  Romania especially brought so much joy probably not witnessed since the foundation of the state. Its too simplistic to credit the Celtic Tiger to it (Science and Technology might have a bit more requirements and know how than Football!) but the feel good factor over the last 30 years cannot be underestimated.

1992 was unfortunate to miss out on given that it was just before the change in format but qualifying for USA 94 with Spain and Denmark in the group and to do so with the infamous Northern Ireland game at the end was glorious. By far the best qualifying campaign of Jacks time. I remember telling everyone the morning of the Italy game that we were going to win to much derision but we got there. That weekend was something else. People out on the town leaning out of the windows of cars with Irish Flags and cars beeping. A fight in the middle of the street but then about 5 minutes later the same pair making up!

Everything was good up until the England clash at Landsdowne Road game in 95 but it was never the same after that. The 0-0 with Liechtenstein was the beginning of the end. We were still in with a chance before that. Outclassed then by the Dutch in Anfield. Was sad looking at the scenes after that game.

Still though a golden age for Leicester City was just around the corner.

We've qualified for tournaments since but it hasn't really been the same. The Saipan controversy and the 2012 hammerings overshadowed our next 2 major events.

What a time Charlton's reign was though.#putemunderpressure Hard not to get emotional watching something like this:

what a man Big Jack was

I remember chatting to an extremely pissed Irishman in a bar in Oslo (that was a great night) who swore blind that Jack Charlton was Irish. "He's more fooking Irish than me mate". He even threatend to fight me for daring to suggest that he was English and wouldn't even accept that he played in the World Cup Final for England -

Conversation then went like this:

Him "nah mate you're thinking of his brother Bobby"

Me "yes, he played as well. His brother. Also English. Both played for England"
Him [now getting very aggresive, places his drink down and adopts fighting stance] "you fookin bastard! Jack Charlton is Irish"

Me : "Aah, you know actually I think you might be right mate. Jack Charlton - yes, yes you're right, born in Dublin I believe"

Him "aye, that's right. Fancy another drink?"

yeah, that's like a round of drinks!

Eye watering prices. Was over £10 for a beer and that was 10 years ago

Even in the supermarket, I brought 6 cans of lager (coke sized cans) and it was £30!

No wonder all Norweigians just brew their own shit at home and get smashed on that!
