We bought our first house, a 3 bed semi, in 1980. The equivalent cost today, allowing for inflation, would be £58000.

However, those same houses are now going for 4 times that amount - £230000!

I really feel for those entering the housing market for the first time. How have we allowed this to happen?

Supply vs demand?

1988 our first house, a terrace on a main road, £17,500. Now going for £169,000.

Our current house bought for £85,000 now valued after 25 years, at £350,000.

I own a house worth a third of a million pounds!!

That's like a mansion, back in the day. My parents would've been proud.

House prices in the Greater Toronto area are insane.

There's a house for sale  on my street that is  the exact same as mine and listed for $700k Canadian  (~£400k) over what I paid for mine in 2018! Absolutely mental!

If I sold my house, likely would need to move somewhere cheaper/further away to get the same size house or bigger.

I could sell my house, move to england and buy a place cash on the 2018 vs 2024 price alone!

I’ve had my first experience this month working with Americans - they’ve got to be the most thickest folk going

Americans are like anyone else, there are smart ones and thick ones.  Top suggest they are all thick is not right.

That said it quite possible to be a successful professional in the US without having much awareness of anything outside America.  the US population is after all around half that of the whole of Europe.

Am I the only person who thinks that 16 y o leaving school after their GCSE’s are over is a waste ?

surely they could be doing pre A level courses (for those moving up to sixth form) or undertaking voluntary work in the community a few days each week ??

Kind of but its a choice, use your GCSE results to continue your education or enter into the cold hard world of low paid work and eventually JSA.

It’s supply of what’s sold though more than a lack of housing.

The biggest problem imo was in the 80s and 90s landlords buying out 4 or 5 houses each, turning them into houses of multiple occupancy and renting out each separate room so they have 5 incomes for one house and making a profit off the mortgage and living on that.

If every couple or single person just owned 1 house or flat they’d be very few problems with the housing market imo.

do you think the saudi league has bribed some euro nations into using some of its players to show that the league is home to major international stars and not just a retirement league.

Ronaldo and Kante are the stand out ones, Kante is playing in that piss poor league yet he still gets in arguably the best international team in Europe, if not the world?

are there other players to back up my bullshit conspiracy theory???

Maybe some of his decision making was poor but also, and more likely IMO was that he was poorly advised and didn't have the nouse to challenge those advising him. Or maybe it's simply that he's past his best and now no-one is interested.

Ronaldo will get in the portugal side until HE decides he doesn't want to anymore. That's what he deserves for being at the top of the game for so long.

Kante gets in the France side because he's still pretty damn good. Arguably the best player on the pitch last night.

Going to a dud league for a pay day doesn't make them bad players. Kante has probably benefitted from being able to run at less than 100% in the league to get over his injuries he was suffering with at Chelsea.

The unchecked piss poor behaviour of the young generation isn't a case of 'we were all young once and we're just older so it seems worse' but actually degeneration of society.

It needs addressing.

The joke about a young player earning himself a big move after a goal or performance at the Euros when he has already moved to a big club is getting a bit old already.

Come to Vancouver, Canada. Houses considered tear down value for a new one to be built in its place are at average 1.7 million dollars.
