I don’t like the framing of the Community Shield as a ‘meaningless friendly’. Seen this more and more recently and why I appreciate other’s opinions it’s always been a bit odd to me.

It’s a cup match at Wembley between the winners of English Football’s two largest prizes with well over a hundred years of history. Up until our new golden era it made a quarter of our major honours.

Im not saying we should revere it, or that it’ll be completely gutted if we lose, but some of the attitudes around it seem a little odd, and even if you discount its worth as a competition then its still great to win silverware before the league has kicked off, especially if our goal is to fill our trophy cabinet as much as possible next year.

I'm still pretty cut-up about losing in 2016.

It's incredible/somewhat embarrassing just how much more London has got to offer than any other English city. I know that it's the capital but there's just so much more to see and do than in any other big English city. If you came to the UK, saw London first and then went onto see Birmingham or Manchester you would be so disappointed.

Make the most of it now, with no tourists around!

I think it’ll change in the next week or so, but at the moment getting into museums, attractions and the like is easy.

I know for some on here it's a bit hipster to slate London but it really is one of the most interesting cities in the world for things to do. And I've travelled a lot.

The only reason the other UK cities can't compete because the bar set by London is so incredibly high.

Irony being, many areas in London are now are overrun by them and as enterprising as this can be, it drives up prices and is often to the detriment and at the expense of the local community. Gentrification is very different to regeneration.

Well yeah of course, the Cereal Killer Cafe was one example. I feel for those who grew up in an area of London only to be priced out of it almost straight away.

Yes definitely. Have you seen what's happening to San Francisco? Enjoyed many good times there in the 90's and have always wanted to return. However it looks like the soul of the city has gone. It's no just some districts but it seems like the whole city has been lost to the tech industry kids

Sad to see for sure. Great city with a rich artistic pedigree. Haven't been there since 2014 - always amuses me that there's a McDonald's on the Haight. The alternative and authenticity are still to be found in North Beach, Telegraph Hill. Mission, Little Italy and SoMa is always worth a visit. Across the bay, Berkeley still has a thriving arts community.

Once caught the BART into downtown Oakland to find the legendary Angel's clubhouse, and to visit the Coliseum - big ****ing mistake.

Used to love walking up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower, the 360 view was breathtaking.

I can't remember the McDonald's on the Haight, but yeah that's not right haha. I do remember and cracking boozer down there called the Mad Dog in the Fog. Dive bar but a great night in there.

Not entirely sure to be honest. Comparable European countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain have far more interesting 2nd/3rd cities than us with the likes of Hamburg, Barcelona, Marseille, Milan, Munich, Florence etc.

Or better still, taking the Greenwich Steps.

Right by Amoeba Records

They are also selling rear parcel shelf nodding Jerry Garcia dolls down there.

I know it. Sports bar in the Lower Haight. You could watch Premier League matches there whilst stuck to the floor.

That period of the pandemic where celebrities, usually d list, made videos of them washing their hands as some form of role model was super ****ing weird.

I do not need Tony Cottee modelling hands washing. Celebrities aren't some how better that it than is folk.

It was really weird and nobody said anything.

I haven't actually been myself, but surely it has more going for it than Birmingham?!!

Milan is the most disappointing place I've ever been. Apart from Duomo its a complete and utter shithole.

Yes  I did that. Got a great shot of the city through a chain link fence from those steps

Well that's pretty disheartening to hear, we're going to Lake Garda for a week in September and planned to have a day in Milan lol

That is interesting! The only Italian cities I've been to are Rome (obviously spectacular) and Florence which is very pretty. I've been to Naples but that was to go to Pompei.

BTW @Nalis am I right in saying that you are from Belfast? I've got a few days free next week between finishing my current job and starting my new so I thought I'd go away for a few days to somewhere I've not been to. Anywhere abroad that's on the green list is probanly too far to go for a couple of days and involves a lot of hassle with covid tests and insurance so I was thinking of a last minute trip to either Belfast or Edinburgh. Leaning slightly more towards Belfast as Northern Ireland is the only nation in the UK that I haven't been to. What is the situation like in Belfast at the minute in terms of covid restrictions? What would you recommend doing? Do you honestly I'd be better off giving Edinburgh a shot?

Naples is amazing. The times I've flown there only to go on to the Amalfi coast,  I could kick myself.

Lake Garda is beautiful. Sitting at a lakeside restaurant at night is so peaceful, the moon reflecting off the water. You'll have a great time there

Its a tough one. In normal times I'd say Belfast is more of an interesting idea due to the history etc rather than a pretty city. Red bus tour along the 'peace' wall and the cathedral quarter are the highlights.

I havent been back to Northern Ireland since pre covid but covid rules lag behind everyone else so I'd suggest checking restrictions at that given time.

Maybe its just because I'm older but I'd recommend tagging along a day of hitting the antrim coast up to the giants causeway and back (its a full day trip), totally worth it as the scenery is pretty epic. But if you are short for time as you say it might not be an option for you.

All in all, I'd go Edinburgh if you are doing a quick weekend but deffo earmark Belfast / Antrim Coast in the future if you have a long weekend free.
