Currently watching Free Solo. Absolutely mind blowing stuff about a guy climbing a huge mountain in Yosemite with no ropes or anything. It's staggering what man is capable of

One of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Watching it at the end was so nerve wracking

Incredible human being. He must have the bit of brain missing that causes fear. It was brilliantly shot as well to show the magnitude of what he did. My arse was clenched the whole time  watching  it lol

When I watched it he had a brain scan (at the end) which revealed pretty much that.

I've actually been to Yosemite and seen El Capitan - it's a seriously scary climb.

On the same topic, if you enjoy 'Free solo' you might also like 'The Dawn Wall' which centres around Tommy Caldwell who climbs with Alex Honnold.

It's definitely made me want to.visit Yosemite

Yeah I've been as well, it's one of the most incredible sights I've ever seen. Then you think he climbed it without a rope, blows my mind!

People shouting its coming home isn't funny, profound, witty or clever.

During family history research, I often find names of Irish ancestors spelt differently.

It's due to a combination of the Anglicization of native Irish names and widespread illiteracy before the late 19th century.

For example, O'Kane, Kane and Keane are Anglicizations of the same Irish surname.

Thus, Harry Kane is not only an Irish immigrant, but a close relation of Roy Keane.

Only found this after I'd made my earlier post: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/blog/discoveries/harry-kane-family-tree

"Harry Kane’s father, Patrick J Kane was born in County Galway before his family emigrated to London. Through his Irish family ties, Harry Kane could have played for the Republic of Ireland national team but it seems his heart was always with England.

Harry’s paternal grandfather, Michael John Kane came from Letterfrack in Galway. When he died in 2013, his body was taken back to his native Letterfrack to be buried in the local cemetery. Many of Harry Kane’s extended family still live in Letterfrack and nearby Renvyle. In fact, some of Harry’s cousins are well-known traditional Irish musicians in the area. Liz and Yvonne perform as ‘The Kane Sisters’ and have admitted that many of the locals have started to support England's football team whenever Harry plays".

So, if Paddy "Harry" O'Kane's old man was born in Galway, Harry is probably more Irish than 30% of Irish internationals during my lifetime.....and he's probably Roy Keane's 7th cousin or something. lol

Anyway, we're all one global nation under a groove.....but come on England on Wednesday - and hope Ireland find a few better players so as to qualify next time. Now the name Patson sounds a bit Irish to me.....

My advice would be to explore the wider national park not simply the 'valley'. The climbing and hiking in the High Sierras is amongst the best that I have experienced anywhere on the planet. I have always intended to complete the entire John Muir trail. Also if you do visit, take a day out to climb Half Dome - it's a 14-16 mile round hike, 4,800 elevation gain from the valley floor - but not particularly difficult.

Nice pics, I made it up half dome myself back in 2012 (I attempted to visit again in 2019 but it was closed due to fires when I was there so ended up in Sequoia National Forest which was equally amazing) and cacked it on the up the cables due to not being comfortable with heights; ladders give me the shakes.  Incredible experience though and probably top of places I'd recommend for people to visit.

You need to take a look in the Linguistic Pedantry thread, you'll find so much more to irritate and agree with.

It's such a joyless newspaper but they clearly know their audience lol

They also did a hatchet job on the original Willy Wonka film recently.
