Probably. But with how our finances are/were with the greater need for reinforcements in other positions, getting a new left back would just be crazy. When really it’s a position we are loaded at, when you consider we had JJ who could play there before he left, Thomas, Kristiansen, Aluko along with Ricardo and Choudhury who have both played there before too.

I’m not saying that Thomas is the next Roberto Carlos here but he’s capable at this level and there’s absolutely no guarantee we will be out of this division next season either.

But we have no need to give him a 4 year contract.

We could have just seen where we are in the summer, no one else would offer him a 4 year contract.

Only reason I would under is if he's taken a 50% to 60% pay cut.

He's a current first team player, he may not be great but I'd rather using any money we have to get someone better in and this lad be back up then waste money needing a back up as well.

Add in the fact he's a local lad, these are the players we want in around the squad.

Yes he's not the best left back in the league but he's solid enough at this level and gets replaced if we go up.

I imagine he probably would get a 4 year contract offer somewhere

Hoffenheim weren’t willing to spend €5m to give him just 2 years

It also could get to January and then he agrees a pre-contract with someone (which could also be why we have sorted a deal now if clubs were sniffing around him ahead of then)

If it is that we are giving away a 4 year contract as he is a potentially cheap option. Isn’t the cheap option/the cover Aluko ? Now that would be a 4 year deal that makes sense.

I hope Thomas has the season of his life, of course I do. It’s just feels like you don’t have do much at this club to get a great reward.

I liked the Thomas that played a few games at the end of last season and looked to have developed a mean streak and toughened up. Can we have him back instead of the soft lad that’s currently playing? The other one looked genuinely promising.

Quoting someone who can’t count to call others thick doesn’t scream irony at all.

He isn’t capable at this level. Watch the Charlton game back!

2016 - 2019

2026 - 2029

Still 3 years :dunno:

Right but his new contract presumably starts now, not in 2026 when his old one would have ended. We can call it a three year extension if you'd prefer but unless I'm missing something very obvious it's a four year contract, isn't it?

Not unless his contract ends mid September 2029

This is all getting a bit "he's 28 until he becomes 29" for me so I think I'll leave it there mate, I'm quite surprised anyone would say a deal going from 2025 to 2029 is not a four year deal but you call it whatever you like I reckon

Not been anywhere near as bad as people are making out. He’s been poor in the past and not a huge fan but been fine this season

I agree he’s been “fine” this season. As we’ve declined as a team we’re now meeting his levels.

Is he the player you sign to get you out of the division or is he the player you sign because you’re planning for a long stay? I think that’s the worry of the 4 years. It feels like either a lack of ambition or adjusting to meet our new reality
