What do You Do When You Can't Face Going To Bed?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

For reasons of anxiety and having little or nothing to do during the normal day I hate going to bed as it means I will have to face another crap day, I stay up late, few glasses of wine, watch shit on YouTube, read a bit, potter around home, until I feel I am almost ready to sleep.

I know tomorrow will come but the longer today stays around the less I fear waking up.

I don't know if this makes sense but for me, it's real.

The other thing I do is post meaningless threads on FT lol

In your case, I would have thought that staying up late is a sensible thing to do.  If you don't have to get up early, then sleep when you want.  A nap in the armchair in the afternoon is a valid option.  No-one else makes the rules for your life.

I have been in a similar situation, I found having a purpose really helps. For me study, not necessarily for a career or anything like that, but just to get some extra knowledge.

Whether this is formally through an open university or informally doing your own readings and watching documentary type videos.

A lot of people are staying up later than they'd ordinarily like and I think it's a 'I'm not in control of my life as much as I'd like to be so I'll damn well be in control of what time I go to bed' thing. I've always done it to a degree and absolutely during bouts of furlough I will.

I'm due back work in the morning after a couple of weeks off which inevitably leads to me staying up later to try and delay it.

I've just started watching The Crown on Netflix which I've previously had no interest in at all.

Work in less than 7 hours, about to start episode 3.

Depends but normally surfing online.  I post more on this forum in the evenings as the kids are sleeping but then we are 5 hours behind UK time so limited responses to my shite posts.

Today i decided to caulk the stairs that go into the basement seeing as we are  finishing it. I re-did the stairs (new treads and risers) but needed a second coat of caulk to hide small gaps. I dont normally work late for that stuff but today i wanted to. Feel like i got shit done.

Now i am delaying sleep because im off work till jan 4th and want to not sleep lol

I used to struggle with getting to sleep or not wanting to go to bed for similar reasons. I think the key is a good routine. I unwind half an hour before bed by not using any technology and go to bed at the same time everyday. Sometimes I’d go to bed at 10:30 and just be lying there for several hours but I persevered. Now I go to sleep at 10:30 and wake up at 6 everyday without fail and have for several years. (With the very rare circumstantial exception)

Routines are key. Not just for kids but adults also. Agree with the poster about finding a purpose, and reading. I recently went to the local charity shops and picked some interesting books and that takes up time. It's a nice feeling when reading a book and feeling tired and going to sleep but appreciate if reading isn't a strong point, it might not work. Relaxing YouTube sounds, not music could help. What's your diet like? Mainly junk or healthier? With all thst watching, it's more likely to be junk but I could be wrong which would make you feel more like crap.

Watching hours of YouTube, Netflix will make you feel worse, groggy, lazy and depressed whereas controlled, it's fine for an hour or two a day. Good luck.

I usually go to sleep as the sun is coming up.

That’s because you’re a vampire

I've got loads of recordings of our games from 15/16 season so usually just stick those on. Also recordings of any big or notable victories from the following seasons after that.

Makes me sad to read this. Hope its something you can work your way through to end up in a slightly better head-space etc.

Its not been a great year. Hopefully better times are ahead for us all.

Hang in there mate. A lot of people would say lay off the alcohol; but I'm the king of self-medicators and I don't think a few glasses of wine does you any harm (although YMMV)

If you're suffering from an actual anxiety disorder (or you think you might be), get down the docs and get prescribed something. It's worth it.

Re. the having f-all to do, I think a lot of people will be in similar situations. I expect most people just doss in the evenings.

I'm bloody terrible at going to bed (and getting up again).

It might sound a bit obvious, or something you've already tried, but it might be a good idea to find a new hobby or a skill that you'd like to learn.

Maybe you'd like to learn how to play an instrument, or maybe even make your own (I'm building a bass guitar currently, although it's pretty much on hiatus with the bloody Covid bollocks. It is great to see it take shape, though). Maybe you'd like to learn a foreign language, or learn to code (I can imagine it's a skill that's in demand). You could learn to paint or you could write something - maybe a short story or an article or something. There might be a DIY project you could do. What's great about the modern world is that there are countless hours of tutorials on pretty much anything for free.

I'm suggesting this because I know that if you can find something to get into, it can make a huge difference to your life. It can make you excited to get out of bed each day if you have something to do that you enjoy.

If you don't think you'd be interested in anything like this, then maybe just catch up on films, books or TV shows that you've been meaning to watch. You never know - you might find something that inspires you.

Anyway, I hope better times lie ahead.

I don't think the time difference is the reason, Jatt :claudio:

I'm already prescribed Citalopram and have been for a few years due to issues at home and at work that never seem to go away.

Thanks for your thoughts. As a result, I'm going to resume trying to teach myself to play the drums. I've had a basic kit for a few years and just played along to songs without really knowing what I was doing, still I can match a basic 4/4 or 4/3 rhythm. Need to learn fills and breaks.

As for trying a new hobby, have ordered a couple of Airfix kits to build and paint. Looking forward to going back 40 years

Thanks again guys.
