A Serious Point

Recommended Posts

My point was its not a joke. We nearly all know it so well we're joking about it. Some would ignore it because it could only bring in 0.1 goals a game instesd of 0.2 goals a match . This game is called Professional football and this season its congested at the top . WE've got to look for every edge. How many goals start are we giving the opposition because of our corners and set pieces ? What would we give for even 4 goals a season, 1-3 extra wins maybe, for free, or at most a few hours coaching. If you'd told the Man U of Denis Law's era it would only bring in a goal every 2 games you'd have gone out of the swing doors to the sound of laughter. George Best got more headed goals per season than our entire team.

Now we have n't got Dennis Law or Alan Shearer but we've got 3 biggish guys, not the biggest admittedly, but two are young and could  probably be coached in a morning to add a few cm. to their leap, They could probably bring in a minimum of an extra 6 goals in what's left of the season. Thats almost half a Mahrez----Free, except for a few hours coaching. I don't believe our coaches are doing this. If they are they are having no effect and want replacing.

To be fare we seem to make up for set piece goals in the form of penalties at the moment but I do think now Soyuncu is back aswell as castagne and Ndidi we could see some improvement in the coming weeks both attacking wise and defensively.

I'm tempted to say "Oh ,great. We don't need corners because we get penalties. Leicester have been awarded ,"awarded" note, a corner but have declined it as they get penalties. A club spokesman said they are prepared to accept vertices but not corners "  One poster has indicated he appreciates the difference between an attacking header and a defensive header. Who's telling Fofana and Soyuncu. Great players but they could improve and I'm sure they love scoring more . Its addictive.

The league is getting tight packed at the top. Now no doubt Stadt will have the stats. but I reckon a team with Fofana, Evans and Cags in it should be picking up at least a goal every 2 matches minimum from corners. Even one every three matches would make quite a difference. We can't afford to keep this at a joke level. Those 3 are all good defensive headers of the ball where keeping the neck stiff is OK. No one seems to be telling them that an attacking header is a totally different animal involving more forehead, and neck flexing and direction with the ball ,often horizontal or downwards. They don't call it nodding it in for nothing. Surely this is n't rocket science and a few  hours coaching at converting corners for these guys must pay dividends. It would n't hurt for Barnes to join in either (converting, not sending them over. ). Look at the attempt by Nacho in the Palace match .That's a defensive header. result over the bar. As one observant poster observed it was n't that  easy a chance but Nacho's attempt made it impossible . Lack of technique.

To my mind JV and Youri should be behind these big guys and they should also be practicing downward headers to Jamie and Youri. If Andy Carroll managed a volley on target then I'm sure our two can. Its still a goal from a corner and often an alternative header giving Jamie or Youri a shot is a better option when you're going up with another big guy, a defender, between the target and you. I don't think JV and Youri  would mind how an opportunity for a shot came to them. I suspect that this sort of header is less of a threat to the brain than the looping clearance defensive header taken higher on the forehead/front of head as an added bonus. This would mean that JV and Youri would n't be joining the rush towards goal but would move back a bit when the ball is kicked , clearing the box for the 3 big guys to run on to the ball (important with an attacking header) and also becoming the first line of defence should they break out quickly ,always a risk.. With say Wilf ,Justin, etc further back I don't think the opposition would  break out quickly often while the bigger  guys jogged back.

Not only that the guys sending the practice corners in Madison, Castagne maybe,Under, would be getting a lot of extra practise at taking corners, and please not all from the same distance either, grounds vary. Good for their morale too to find one or two converted instead of zero at the moment.

This might be a load of crap, but we're not even managing serious attempts at goals from corners at the moment. Now Brendan and the coaches are n't going to read my crap but someone on this forum must have the ear of the coaches to at least find out whats going on. I'm fed up with groaning when we get a corner. Trying to get a bet on for Leicesters next headed goal is impossible , even bookmakers are n't that heartless. Who knows these techniques with a bit of modification should be useful at free kicks where I also don't think we're as good as we should be. There's plenty of time to get this going before Stoke and apologies if its already happening. What do I know ?

Sheeple we are NOT.

It's pretty obvious to me that when the other 19 premier league teams are practicing the "conga corner" or the one with the volley on edge.of box.  We're just banging out penalties winning and scoring of.

Statistically speaking the opposition are more likely to score from a break away than the attacking team are from the corner. What does this tell you!!!?

It tells me we should improve our corners. It also confirms that JV and Youri should as suggested move backwards instead of forward for a possible shot from a directed downwards header . If it does n't come they are an additional "slow the break away " line of defence.

No it should tell you that it is very difficult to score from a corner and quite unlikely.

Topic starter has a point, we win so many corners against defensive teams and it's an easy opportunity to get bodies in the box which doesn't require build up play. We should make more of them and whether that means being more inventive because we're not a big team so be it, it would really help us breaking down low blocks if we could make more of set pieces!!

.....perhaps you may be doing something wrong!!!

You watch games and attackers at a corner take up the same position over and over. There seems to be no thought which goes into being up for corners as your comment shows you have already written off the prospect of scoring before the kick is even taken.

If you could take a look at Arsenal, with Adams,Keown and Bould they came up with inventive patterns in order to confuse the opposition. I would suspect not a great deal of attention is paid to this part of our game and in a recent topic on set pieces, it was found that the club never practised that particular area of play. The NFL have a Special Teams squad, we need to either include additional attention to set pieces in our existing Coaches repertoire or bring in specialised people to work on this aspect of our play.

Size to a great extent does not come into this as their are tall players who are unable to elevate themselves to any great degree. A player say 5' 10" can still be deadly with crosses whipped in from open play, without the need to leave the ground. All down to movement and quickness of thought.

Agree with all of that. Some players are exceptionally good at reading the flight of the ball and score a lot of headers although not tall. Jamie Vardy seems very good at it. He recently got a goal at the far post against a defender who looked favourite right up until jamie headed it. (actually it was an own goal off the defenders knee ,but JV's anticipation and effort made the goal.). Andy Gray I remember as not particularly tall but he got , as I remem.ber, a lot of headed goals

Can’t be arsed to go on my laptop and dig out the stats properly but I reckon Premier League central defenders average 2 goals season.

Having checked -

Last season (PL only), Van Dijk got 5 goals. Adam Webster and Issa Diop got 3 each. Everyone else 2 or fewer. The average is probably less than 2 a season.

Didn’t read all of the OP but corners is a problem for us both ends. Haven’t scored one and conceded the most (or there abouts)

I wander what happens in training. Is it our attacking of corners is so poor that we don’t get enough practice to defend them... or..... is it our defending of corners is so rubbish in training that the attackers end up against a better level in real matches

🤔

I think we've still got a romantic notion of Elliott, Walsh, Taggart all going forward and getting their share of goals from corners but we aren't as bothered about set-pieces now.

Of the current crop, I'd say Morgan is the most likely/ comfortable in front of goal. He was good for a few goals per season.
