Just had a thought.

We've had Vardy's goals.

We've had goals from midfield, predominantly Maddison, Barnes, Tielemans. Even Ndidi last week.

Now it's time for the defence to step up. Justin and Castagne have chipped in but maybe Fofana, Soyuncu and Evans need to get their act together!!!

What does everyone think?

It requires some decent delivery for one, which admittedly has been very inconsistent this season. It seems we're putting more work into our set pieces lately, so I can see a goal from a centre back happening soon. We're not a tall side, so lumping it in the box is very unlikely to yield results, so we shouldn't expect more than maybe a couple of goals per season from them.

We're the third joint top scorers in the league (tied with Man City) so I disagree, I think you start looking at your defenders if you're really struggling everywhere else on the pitch. I'd imagine this would be a good topic for the Burnley forum!

Having said that, we'd usually expect to have one CB that seems to get 2 or 3 a season from corners and freekicks but this looks unlikely with the current set piece system.

I think this is because we don't have a plan B.

I wonder how many headers our centre backs have headed over the bar or straight at the opposition goalie this season.

I don't think many. Their heading has n't progressed to that accuracy yet. Much, more practice please . Few seem to realise that a corner needs much the same skills to score from as a cross altho there are differences. Practice ,practice ,practice attacking headers, corner taking, and mix them up.

...I  thought we had covered this with the topic on corners and set pieces!!!

Yes, but we're having an "every thought gets a new thread" weekend.

Didn't you get the memo?

Over the course of the season, I'd like to think that the defensive unit should/could chip in with about 10 goals.  I'd expect most of those to come from the fullbacks but a centre back should be aiming for one goal every 15 games or so.  Two per season each. If we get 6 corners per game, that's 90 corners in 15 games.  I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a couple of centre back goals amongst that.  Definitely an area in which we can improve.

I love a good old fashioned goal scoring centre back, Matty Elliott must have got about 25 for us over the years.

He did play as a striker quite a bit though, like Walsh. But yeah, that would be an oddity in today's game.

I have always admired Sergio Ramos' knack for scoring, despite all his other drawbacks. That's a proper scoring centerback!

You have a point Alf, over 400 games for the club and one goal - that he didn’t even get credit for. Not good enough!

Fun fact: His dad scored the same amount of career goals as Dimmy Gray has scored league goals for us.

I just had to check that apparently unbelievable stat.....and it's true, 9 goals apiece.

Though Schmeichel Senior's goal-scoring record is flattering in that 6 of his 9 career goals were scored in the Danish 2nd division.

I didn't know that Kasper's granddad (Peter's dad) was a Polish jazz musician....

I like the account of Kasper's parents meeting too (from Wikipedia):

"The following season Gladsaxe-Hero needed only to avoid defeat to Stubbekøbing to prevent relegation from the Danish National League. In the end, Schmeichel played one of the best games of his career and Gladsaxe-Hero won the match. At the end of the game, [1st team coach] Hansen's daughter, Bente, ran onto the pitch and hugged Schmeichel. The two ended up going out as a couple, and they eventually got married".

.....I'll avoid the temptation to make sordid puns about Gladsaxe-Hero. :D

Until we sort out our set pieces, we wont be seeing any defenders score any time soon.

Sort out our Set pieces...I would Think the goals would come automatically....

Neither in attacking or defending, do we seem to have Not only 1 but 2 players 'prepared'

to attack the ball....

Also I still reckon from attacking corners, we should have some One , Edge/Corner of the Penalty area, far-post side.

...no one gambles on the near post for our corners and that in itself is criminal!!!

Vardy defending near post corners is also criminal as he needs to be in a position to break on the opposition, like Van Nistelrooy use to wait just in his own half just inside the touch line.

To be fair to Justin he gets in the positions to score (should have scored against Chelsea)  and if he starts adding goals to his game he will be the next 50m full back added to our squad.
