The inconvenient Mason Mount truth that Phil Foden and James Maddison fans don't understand
Few Chelsea players in recent memory have had as many doubters as Mason Mount but there is a very good reason every coach loves the England international midfielder

It was in November that Frank Lampard emphatically addressed the accusations from those outside Chelsea that favouritism was the reason Mason Mount always started in his side.

“It is very easy for someone to sit on the phone and make very harsh statements," he said. "With Mason, maybe it's because he looks clean-cut - he is doing an advert where he takes his top off and I think that’s about as edgy as he gets.

“He doesn’t do many triple stepovers or flicks over the back of his head, as he shouldn’t do. He makes really efficient, clean and sharp passes.

“He presses as well as any midfielder that I have worked or trained alongside and he does 100 things within his game that impresses the managers that he works for."

Lampard hasn't been the only coach to defend his selection of Mount this season. In October, England boss Gareth Southgate publicly discussed the criticism the Chelsea star was receiving from so-called fans on social media and even from certain sections of the media.

“I suppose on that you’re referring to Mason, whose only crime is not to be Jack [Grealish] at the moment,” Southgate said. “I’m also aware I should talk about Mason because then it keeps the memes going of me talking about Mason."

It's become clear over the past 18 months that Mount is a coach's dream player. He is low-maintenance off the pitch and a tireless worker on it. He also doesn't lack top-level quality, although many appear intent on overlooking that rather important fact.

At Chelsea, the appointment of Tuchel has dampened some of the hysteria around Mount's regular inclusion in the starting XI. The German coach had not previously worked with the 22-year-old when he took charge at Stamford Bridge in January, so his choice to play the academy graduate is taken at face value.

It will not be so easy for Mount to win over his doubters with England, however. The Three Lions have an abundance of talent, particularly in the final third. And there are three players Mount has been pitted against: Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and James Maddison.

Mount detractors, of which there are curiously many, tend to base their argument against his inclusion in the England side on his impact in the final third. As one critic on social media, MR DT of Arsenal fan TV, rather brazenly said this week: "First and foremost, an attacking midfielder is based on the chances they are creating. He has less (sic) than all of the players [Grealish, Foden and Maddison] we're mentioning."

Social media ensures such statements are instantly taken as truth and then quickly repeated. Very few fact check and that's understandable given the swathe of content that users of Twitter, Instagram and Tik Tok are bombarded with.

But let's take a quick look at the numbers, and for this we will use FBRef.

When it comes to shooting-creating actions per 90 in the Premier League this season, Grealish leads the way among the quartet (6.10). Mount is then next up (4.96) followed by Maddison (4.53) and then Foden (3.56).

But Mount takes set-pieces so that's why, right? Wrong. In open play, the Chelsea midfielder (2.70) is still second to Grealish (4.64) but is again ahead of Maddison (2.38) and Foden (2.35).

The same order remains for key passes per 90, completed open-play passes into the opposition penalty area per 90, and progressive passes per 90.

Where Mount is bottom of the quartet is in assists per 90 (0.12), but this is a figure very much dependent on his team-mates' finishing ability.

His expected goals assisted per 90 figure is far higher (0.22) and is similar to Foden (0.25) and Maddison (0.21). Grealish again tops the list among the four (0.37).

There are a couple of big takeaways here. The first is that Grealish has been exceptional this season. The second is that Mount is far more influential in the final third than given credit for.

The real difference for the Chelsea academy graduate is, however, what he does out of possession. And it's this coupled with his ability to create chances that really makes him everything a coach wants in a player.

In the Premier League this term, Mount has won 1.65 tackles per 90, has made 1.21 interceptions per 90, and has registered 6.53 pressures per 90). Neither Foden, Grealish or Maddison can better Mount in any of those categories.

Yes, the fact he regularly operated deeper – on the left of a midfield three – under Lampard will have slightly skewed his defensive output. But by the same token, that will have impacted his attacking performance too. Although evidently not to a great extent.

So there you have it. Mason Mount is a coach's dream. He possesses the skill and creativity of a number ten with the industry of a box-to-box number eight. And the best thing? He is only going to get better.

I think part of the criticism of Mount stems from the fact that Southgate has really made Madders, Grealish and Foden work damn hard to get into that England team, whereas after stringing a few games together for Chelsea, Mount has been a virtual ever-present no matter how much his form dipped last season.

I have to say though, this season he has really stepped up for Chelsea and even carried them a bit at times when they were playing poorly.

It was mentioned on Football365 that Southgate really focuses on what certain players can't do, not what they can. You sense he's not particularly keen on Grealish, for example. Maddison won't play much under him, the casino thing was blown way out of proportion and I don't believe Southgate rates him.

As for that article- if it was picked on form, Maddison should be in if fit. He had a brilliant two months from mid-December until his injury against Aston Villa.

Neve really bar the tournaments followed England much but tonight feels like there is maybe the lowest appetite for International football in a very long time.

Ditto, looking at that table i don't even know how the players are meant to raise their peckers for these 10 games let alone us fans.

If we don't top the group with a clean sweep, 30+ goals & under 5 (i so wanted to put 0) goals against then the whole ENG structure needs ripping down & building again, maybe just select players from Championship & below as they will show a bit of spirit

Bet Kane is desperate to play tonight to improve his goal tally. Surely he won't though with 2 other games to play.
