Correct.

What have you heard on Wanya Marca and Alves?

Wanya Marca has a deal on the table but it hadn't yet been signed and I think his representatives got a story out in the papers a while ago that teams back in Portugal and in Europe wanted him.

Alves I hadn't heard of any issues until I think it was a well known poster on here said there might be trouble at mill with him and the club. Rudkin though has supposedly been trying to line up a lucrative Pro deal for him for next year and to reassure him of his pathway here.

The pathway assurance thing is funny. I was talking to a young footballer in 15/16 before the win. He told me we had a good reputation because of Schlupp and King and many young footballers were thinking about Leicester. Now we’re pushing for Champions League it seems to have gotten harder: we’re less likely going to risk an academy kid since we’ve been a point from Champions League the last couple of seasons. And the more popular the academy, the harder it all be to satisfy them all.  That said, Thomas, Taveras, and Daley-Campbell got minutes last season. I hope we use the FA and League cup to give the academy kids minutes, with our strongest squads left for Europa and the league.

It's more them playing U18's earlier, U23's earlier and possibly go on loan earlier. All things which were quite slow here but is getting better.

Cole DaSilva appears to have signed for a Croatian side. Odd one this as he played quite a few games for us and now gone.

He was filling in for us, very odd of us really to have brought him in to do so. He's 23 and was never going to be here on a proper contract.

Agree. I guess they didn’t want to play ones recently let go or younger players but it doesn’t shout of ‘we will progress you’…

Here's to another season of us taking over age players on trial from the likes of Port Vale to play for the U23's.

Thanks for posting that, as I missed it. Two of those fixtures are very convenient for me so I’ll pop along no doubt.

I've heard lots of negative stuff from one player.

It about putting out a team, most of the of the u23, u18 will be cheap fillers around 2-3 players the club think will make it.

What type of things do they say?

Mad that the 23s play so much rubbish compared to the first teams style and the emphasis on physicality is good for producing lower league players but not top level players.

Think that's what they aim for with 23s tbh or have done in the past. Saleable assets like josh Knight.

Almost like they aim to produce saleable assets whilst pushing any hopeful talent on loan or into the first team

Yep and if that's the aim then it's fine but we seem to have a challenge for ones that aren't quite ready and how do you send a player on loan that's only played y18s. The 23s football concept isn't a great one tbh. I get the approach but I think there should be more sync between  the first team and the 23s.

Ultimately, Seagrave, St George's Park and any other similar facilities that are deemed world class, whatever the expense, are mere buildings, gyms and fields without the very best of coaches, management and a clear and effective strategy.

Our owners are undeniably ambitious and have their eye on the ball as does our recruiting infrastructure. The academy however seems to be less transparent ie is Beaglehole and his team up to the job? What is their brief? Are they supposed to be producing players for our first team or players for sale to make money? If it's the former, then logically their training, conditioning and playing style should mirror that required by our current manager. Some people are appearing to comment that the latter doesn't seem to be the case. If true that appears perplexing and needs addressing. Whilst fully accepting that players mature at different ages, we do seem to end up with a bunch of players that appear to go out on loan very late or not at all before disposed of. Winning Micky Mouse u23 or similar leagues and competions for example is nice but surely not a priority. Perhaps a bit more clarity is required together with suitable staff employed to achieve a clear set of aims.

...and the Reserve team football did that mixing youngsters with squad members maintaining their fitness.

The Academies are just allow the richer clubs, and that's starting to include us to sweep up all the potential from the lower leagues which I'm not convinced was the intention or even the best idea.

It was the big clubs intention 100%

EPPP is bad for footballing balance.

It's great for rich clubs to dominate.

I agree....but i think what made the situation worse was extending the U21s format to U23s to prevent too many players falling out of the game too early.

Very well intended change to try and protect player welfare..... but the reality is that if you're not good enough at 21 for first team or a loan move, its unlikely that will change by time you're 23.  And the adverse effect has been too many 22-23 year old players now blocking pathways for 18-19 year old players.

As harsh as it sounds, 21 was the ideal cut off-point for those players who were good enough to stay in the game to move on/up....and those that weren't to consider other potential career options.
