Can we please just chuck all social media in the bin? I'm convinced Instagram is actually ruining the world and turning everyone into a narcissistic lunatic with a totally warped view on life, especially young women.

This would probably be the best bet.

The Internet and especially with the rise of social media has and is ruining the way people conduct there life.

ive not read entire thread so sorry if this is repeated

on sunday/monday i think we saw an example of classic bias political broadcasting with the strategic juxtaposition of two stories with the intention of a pushing an agenda

remember at half time with a massive captive audience the BBC managed to shoehorn in some footage of apparently ticketless fans running up steps of wembley trying to get in and also some footage of disorder in Trafalgar square

12 hours later and the most read BBC article is racially motivated social media abuse.

hmmmm...HANG ON A SECOND.... I BET ITS THE SAME UNDERLASS OF ANIMALS RESPOSIBLE FOR BOTH...PUNISH THEM..THEY PROBABLY VOTED BREXIT TOO

someone order the BEEB drones some extra almond flakes for their oatmilk chocka mocca latte for a job well done

What agenda were they pushing ? Did they plant people in there to push through barriers and get into Wembley, ticketless ? We’ve got the conspiracy theory on the guy based in Algeria magically (probably by a portal) appearing in Manchester to damage the Marcus Rashford mural. Will be interesting know how they staged this one.

God sake, it’s not all a conspiracy theory. Racism exist. Thuggery exists, stupidity exists. It’s been ignored for years. People have put with it for years. Now it’s effect has more of a reach then previously and that’s down to social media and the internet generally. Ignoring it doesn’t fix the problem. It never has. It evidently acts as indirect acceptance.

Unfortunately, we can’t just get rid of social media as it provides and incredibly good service. Especially for businesses, the global reach etc. However, it’s far too open a present. Work needs to be done to limit users but not lose that global appeal which makes it so appealing - easier said then done.

One thing I am sure of is blaming this on a media conspiracy or “snowflake” mentality is not the way - it doesn’t fix the problem. It just makes it normal which it never should be.

rascism and thuggery has not been ignored though has it...i remember being taught about predujice in comprehensive school in the 80's...its old news really

as for snowflake mentality...i dont know maybe just my perception but folks do seem a little more precious..less robust and resiliant..to eager to play the victim or pull an excuse.

Absolutely. And when you consider the strides made since the 80s you’ll agree it was a good idea. Unfortunately, now live in a new age, with new problems to combat. That’s why it’s brought up again. That’s why combatting it further, pro-actively is needed.

Do they? I wasn’t aware of that. I don’t know why this thread is happening then as they must be doing a bang up job. Thank you, Nick Clegg.

They remove anyone violating their policy, what would you have them do?

Please don't tell me that older people aren't precious or over touchy. Some of the worst victimhood comes from people my age and older.

What has irked me a little, is how England fans are being portrayed as the "bad guys" with the Italian team some type of saviour.

When in fact, racism in Italy is arguably worse than in Britain. We see nazi salutes in stadiums, bananas thrown at black

players in Italy.

No country should be seen as "the lesser evil" when this is an issue we all need to tackle together.

Do you remember the content? Genuinely interested. I went to school in the 90s/00s and, while I'm sure it was touched upon, I don't remember any serious education on it. There was certainly nothing on racism as anything other than a random existing fact, irrational prejudice that some people have and is bad but is basically a fact of life which would eventually fade away via education. It wasn't until I was an adult that I came into contact with any explanations of racism that saw it as structural, related to power and wielded with purpose rather than just being driven by irrational hatred.

i'll shut up now..promise

This is a great thread and I will be writing to my MP. He is a Tory and member of the government and I have seen a couple of racist gaffes from him on social media. So if I can possibly provoke him into something inappropriate at the same time that would be a good bit of reputational damage as well.

we didn't attend 'dont be a rascist thug' class in the 80's but i do remember an assembley where the maths teacher..rather than confuse me with largely irrelevant facts about hypoable triangles, he gave a talk about how life will be a constant battle with our own hate...

Italy has major issues with racism I'd agree but regardless of what happened after the game the events before it alone would have reflected very badly on England.

Racism is a sickness of our current and past society and it needs to be removed from society.

What we do not know who sent these vile comments on social media, it is not necessarily white people, it could be any group trying to incite a reaction?

White people are not the only racists, there are many through the world, black, white & Asian. In Europe you have white people being racist to white people same in many countries where religion and ethnicity creates a divide.

When I worked abroad a lot I was subjected to racial comments, but having lived in the multi cultural society along the Belgrave Road, I ignored these incidents and put it down to ignorance. There is to much racism around the world not just in the UK and if these ignorant people cannot be educated, then what hope do we have for the future, when a minority makes people reflect on the majority.

Schools and parents must be held responsible for much of this terrible behavior

Apparently twitter took down 1000 racist tweets. For context, 350,000 tweets are sent every minute.

Having read an article by Barnay Ronay, all twitter et al have to do is to have a few individuals monitor the twitter accounts of Rashford, Saka and Sancho when specific events occur like Sunday evening. Even I could have predicted the outcome after Rashford missed.

It was all so obvious.

As soon as some racist troll posts some evil crap, immediately block, delete and Barr them from the platform. I can't help but think that doesn't fit their business model. Their profits must correlate with controversy.

Surely all the service providers and people that run social media accounts could block messaging from non-uk devices, or would that be too much of an infringement on peoples civil rights.

Blaming racism in this country on foreigners. Are you an ostrich?

I wasn't intending by any means to let us off the hook or reduce severity of the English fans actions. Simply wanted to highlight the fact that, given the media were making the Italians appear as the saviours, that this wasn't the best representation of them

Logging into social media and calling a footballer the N word because he missed a penalty boggles my mind, freaks.

You've quoted a post by some unknown right winger. He doesn't provide a source.

How is it possible that as most of the racist tweets are anomonised, the country of origin can be identified?
