Kante is way more than just a defensive midfielder as many think.

Yes he breaks up play in front of the defence but offers so much more.

He's real box to box when played there.

Mendy although done OK last season when filling in is not the answer to our problems.

The squad is early showing a complete lack of confidence and its no surprise there is no consistency in the performance when the formation and system changes most games even sometimes multiple times in games.

BR clearly does not know the best system to go with right now never mind his strongest 11.

It's no wonder the team is playing with total confusion right now.

I hate to say it as I'm a big BR fan  but it's not looking good.

Kante isn't just a defensive midfielder, he's true box to box. I couldn't believe how good he was today - making space, driving with the ball, winning the ball and ultimately scoring too.

I think I've preferred Mendy to Soumare from what I've seen.

Soumare seems way off the pace at the moment.

I noticed many occasions where his brain was just too slow for the pace of the game, however been a new signing it might be a harsh criticism, as not all players hit the ground running.

He’s one of the greatest DMs in Prem history imo right alongside Viera.
If Kante made his debut today and then retired tonight, he would still of had a better career than Mendy.

Anyone who honestly thinks Mendy offers more than Soumare needs to get off the drugs.

The reason the narrative constantly goes around how ‘Mendy was so good at the start of last season’ was because we were on fire with a great squad around him carrying him and he was the weak link.

With the shower of crap we are watching currently, who will cover for Mendys deficiencies?

With Mendy Amartey Vestergard and Betrand in our squad , we might as well give up any hope.

Best decision as it has been ever since the start of his career here is to sell. As hes so good on here I assume we could get 50 mill for him…(50£ at a push).

After his performance vs Spurs on the last day of the season, he shouldn’t be allowed on a professional pitch again, let alone playing in the Prem. Get rid.

Kante showed us today that we do need a workhorse in our midfield.

Clearly Soumare not it and N'didi is far from his previous form.

Man Utd got Fred

Chelsea got Kante

Liverpool got Keita

As much as we are keep blaming our defenders all the time, the real problem lays within them not having any support front them.

If Kanté showed us that we need a workhorse in the midfield, then why are you suggesting Mendy, who prefers to sit back and make simple passes?

Mendy is nowhere near good enough.

I’m not sure I’ve seen Mendy ever play as bad as Soumare did yesterday? At least Mendy has a fookin go

Soumare is overweight and so slow. He was garbage yesterday

Mendy is steady, knows his position and works hard. I like him.

but he’s not the answer for the issues we have, certainly doesn’t help defending set pieces.

Agreed.

I used to be think Vieira and Gerrard were midfielders that could do everything (win the ball back, drive forward, score all types of goals, take set pieces, strong, decent in the air) and I think Kante has that too.

We haven't got a midfielder like it and I watch Kante and can't believe he actually played for us.

In terms of Mendy, our investment has been poor this summer just gone. I looked at the pitch yesterday and not one new signing gave me confidence they could take this game and change it for us.

But does nothing else for the team.

People weren't moaning about Soumare when he bossed it against Spartak Moscow.

Mendy is no better than anyone else we currently have in midfield.

I don't see what he offers to us.

I think we have gone for youth and promise over experience of late, and the trouble is that youth and promise expects to play otherwise it has a youthful strop. But what it means is that experienced pro's are getting marginalised and undervalued. The side that won the title, solid pro's with a point to prove.

As for Mendy, cannot fault the way he has handled himself and we should let him go and play football

Mendy probably suffered when he came to us by being compared to Kante.  He can put a shift in works hard and is not afraid to put in a few tackles. The manager clearly does not rate him perhaps because he doesn't have the range of passing that say Tielemans has but he is still a decent player. I think the problem at the moment is that we have several choices for defensive midfield in the squad but apart from Ndidi I am not sure who should be first on the team sheet. I would like Rodgers to give a few players more of a run after the last few home performances.

Really great thread this. I'm delighted someone finally is talking about the real issues in this squad.

We never had the issues we have now on corners with 5ft6 mendy in the team.

Quick trip to memory lane mate. Remember his efforts week in week out in the beginning of the last season.

And if you keep going down that same memory lane you’d remember he’s been doggo in many games for us too.

when something is clearly wrong like there is now, it’s a bit short sighted to lump the blame on one player….  Especially If CDM is your concern, then I don’t get why  Wilf is not the center of your attention. Mendy is not a box2box midfielder. Soumare is. They play different rolls  ndidi is the player you should focus on. If you don’t have any complaints with him then you are clearly just frustrated at the situation and looking for a scapegoat.

Mendy is a good player but not the answer to our problems though he does hold the ball well. We lack real pace and strength in midfield.

Soumare is promising but he seems to be too nice on the pitch. He needs to develop more and that takes time and Coaching.

I'd get rid of all the fringe players Hamza, Perez, Mendy, Bekovitch, Bertrand, Vestgaard lookman.and bring in two or three proven quality players to improve the team.

I'd even consider getting rid of Maddison who slows us down a lot in attacking situations.

While Mendy put in some good performances early last season, he was poor November onwards last season with notable shockers against Everton, Leeds and Spurs at home last season. Not good enough.

Soumare was awful but being better than that garbage shouldn't be the barometer. The reality with Mendy is he's not really very good. He's neat enough and he keeps the ball. I don't really see what he offers beyond making a few 10 yard passes. He's not very strong, he's not got any real pace, our record with him in the side last season was poor - the Brighton cup game was a good example of what I mean, he looked a bit out of his depth frankly.

I'm with Deano on Mendy I think he's miles off the level needed - though Soumare has been disappointing as well.
