I know his attitude has been questioned at times but in interviews I see nothing but a good attitude from Maddison. It's great to see him looking back close to his best.

Maddison gives the best interviews on the team: It isn't the usual twaddle. I really enjoy them.

I'm starting to think the slow walk for corners is an intentional routine - he does it at any point in a match, regardless of score, time remaining or how tired or not he is. He's only recently gone back to being main corner taker, and on top of that, his corners are more dangerous than they have been for a while - he's notched 2 assists from them this week. Perhaps he's intentionally walking over calmly and slowly so he can be focussed, take his time and deliver a better ball instead of sprinting over and rushing it before hitting the first defender. Think of Jonny Wilkinson and his penalty kick routine in rugby, or Paul Gallagher's penalty technique - set piece delivery quality relies on consistency of technique and a focussed taker, and one way sportspeople achieve that it by repitition and habits. Maybe this slow corner walk is something he's worked on lately to improve his corner delivery. Based on the last few games, it seems to be working.

your the one with the nightmare, do you think ronaldo or messi would waddle off for a game of a golf the morning of there teams football match

If they aren't playing? Could be off doing absolutely anything they like. Like Maddison was.

If Madders is having to explain what he does in his private life (which the club seem pretty comfortable with (most of the time)). He is fighting a losing battle with some of our fans.

Spot of golf ?. How is that an issue ? I can't understand it. What is he meant to be doing - sat at home or on the training pitch - no rest ? Even if he's made an error ?

Come on man, he is 20 something with talent, relatively good looking and a (so the kids tell me) stylish. He will have dumbass moments (like any 20 something year old) but he will also live his life. I'm sorry but unless it brings the club in the spotlight for no good reason, its nothing to do with us. Its actually quite weird that its an issue.

Spot on.

At the League Cup match against Brighton, I saw two players not in the squad: Youri and Benko. No Schmeichel, no Evans; so the captain and vice captain had better things to do. But it's okay if they aren't there when, you know, they aren't in the squad. But Maddison? Nope, if he golf's when the team isn't even actually playing, it's because he loves expensive shoes and hates football.

Taking the initial post as a reference point, I'd add Thomas as a must start, along with Madders and Barnes. Some of their interactions on the left were top notch.

I just wonder whether Madders is flourishing so much because Tielemans is out. I think he likes being the flash/flair player in the side and Tielemans is getting all the plaudits atm and has been doing so since Maddison was carrying that injury. He does thrive in the spotlight - and I believe that gives him the confidence to be the performer we all know he is.

I wonder if Tielemans has been playing under duress of minor injury for a while too...

Maddison always strikes me as somebody who was given a gift at something he doesn't truly love in football, he likes a social life and maybe a music gig more.

Its why he is frustrating as he is so inconsistent, and I get on at him because he has so much natural ability, look at the free kick against arsenal technically it was brilliant , obviously the save was brilliant by ramsdale but maddison has that wand of a foot when he wants to use it. I just get the sense he will end up 35 and with a few regrets that he never fulfilled his potential.

Barnes if he could finish in the final third better he'd be a hell of a player.

the team really are worse off in general when both these lads are not playing at top speed, its why they get so much ear its that simple.

I've read some absolute guff on here over the years, that's got to be up there with one of the most ridiculous statements ever posted

Just look at Lewis Hamilton as an example of a high performance athlete who has the capacity to have a very engaging social life with commitments all while still performing at the highest level in their profession.

....I have said it before, he needs a mentor!!!

I would suppose he is very close to his father and the people he hangs out with have his mindset. He needs someone out of that sphere to counsel him. There are times for hard realities and I get the feeling there  is no one imparting that knowledge to him.

Rodgers benching him has focused his mind and you want someone there that will pull him up time after time.

Just watching his interview, he was saying the right things but his body language was of a young adolescent.

Maddison is fairly prominent.  Most of the time his attitude is excellent.  When he errs, it becomes a massive deal for some.   To me, he comes across as a flawed individual with a conscience.

He has been chosen as part of the players' leadership group suggesting he is respected by others.

He struggled earlier in the season but he has got himself into a position where he is influential on the pitch.   He will have worked hard to get there as to be expected of a high performing professional athlete.

For me, fans should be behind him and contributing to him having a positive mind-set.   In my opinion, some of the criticism on here of Maddison, and others, is wildly over the top.

Out of form Maddison v England’s superstar midfielder.

Southgate can't choose Maddison. Maddison has a personality and ego. Those won't fit into Southgate's bland band of brothers. Just look at those photos. Maddison is confidently hushing the crowd. Mount looks apologetic that he's been allowed on the pitch.

I hope Maddison can get lucky with injuries now. I’ve said before he is such a special talent and now he’s looking fully fit he is starting to shine!!

England are fools not to select this guy when he’s on it, I believe he’s more talented than Grealish and certainly more than Mount! But the less football elsewhere can only be good for us so I’m not too fussed😂😂

Keep going Madders!!

Both Barnes and madders have had to get over serious injuries, I think we are starting to see a return to form for them now.

All this stuff about attitude with madders, he just has a prominent personality, that seemingly people don’t like.

Both top players on their day, now just needs consistency.

No it's just he's waiting for the centre backs to get up the pitch into position. If you notice they only just arrive when he's marking the ball on the spot. If he went any quicker he's be having to wait anyway...

In my opinion, these should be among the first names on the team sheet.

When these two fire, we have our mojo.

Any opposition defence would feel happier if they were not in our team.

I have seen a lot of criticism of these players on this forum.  I don't get it.  Players with this flair are players I want in our team.  As far as I can see, both show commitment consistently.

Equally, I have seen a lot of favourable posts recognising that they are special players.

They are not always our best players; they need structure around them.  But the structure also needs the outlet of flair.  With these two, more chances are created for others as they need a lot of defensive attention.

Agree on some parts but let’s be fair it’s very easy to write a post like this just after they’ve played a couple of good games.

Let’s not forget that they have been largely anonymous all season and beyond.

No doubt the quality is there, just lacking that consistency - which you’d expect from two younger lads like themselves.

Wouldn't be surprised. Key players inevitably get consistently selected and pick up injuries where healing never completely happens. Either that or develop a 'running' exhaustion, either or both physical and mental - which could explain why he has lapses of concentration within games.

I recall Tommy Smith's revelation that he had permanently swollen knees from repeated cortisone injections given to allow him relatively pain free games. When you see players like Madders and Jonny Evans carrying injuries and being declared 'fit to play', it makes me wonder whether the idea of player welfare and wellbeing has kept pace with healing and restorative therapies.

It's easier to post the opinion after a couple of good games, yes.

But we need flair on the pitch.  Who else do we have of a similar ilk?  Lookman is possibly the closest.

Barnes needs momentum in the play to be at his best. When we are at it, he is unplayable. He’s not the type of player to just make something out of nothing, and if there is no pace in the game you’ve got no chance of getting the best out of him. Put him in Liverpool’s side he would be destroying defenders. He has improved as our performances have improved.

Madders has bags of ability, but I think he harbours doubts about his physical fitness, when he doesn’t play well, it is as if something is on his mind and he isn’t focused on the game, again, when he plays well we are a threat.

We are a very sensitive side, when things aren’t going well it seems to hamper us, when they are going well we’re as good as anyone in the league.

Not for me. He has pace but his decision making is questionable.

I like him running at direct at players, which I don't think he does enough actually, but I rarely think it's going to turn into something. He seems to run into nothing quite a bit.

That’s because half the time we’re too slow in our build up play, Barnes will try to inject some pace into a move and often run down a blind alley.

Barnes himself isn’t the issue, we currently at

are not playing in a way that gets the best out of him, he was untouchable last season when we were playing well and when we seem to be off the boil Barnes is too.

I do like him hugging the touchline more and coming inside but at the minute we don't seem to do that on either side.

Barnes' decision-making and goal threat are in his locker, and will come back.  My issue with him is that to be a more complete player he needs to show more determination to win the ball back for the team when things aren't going well.  Maybe that's expecting a lot for his type of player - after all, Mahrez wasn't very good in those ways either.

If hecould add Albrighton's tenaciousness to his game he would be a more complete player and of such more value to the team.
