Has he? He averaged under 40 and that includes having a not out century. I quite like Hameed for what it's worth just don't think he's justified a recall yet. On a separate point Root is the only one in our squad with a test average over 35, how poor is that.

That's my point when I say he's the best of a bad bunch. There's such a desert of Test-ready talent at the minute that those stats constitute that. Look at how we ended up with Roy up top two years ago.

The only other newcomer to make enough waves in the Championship to get a go has been Sibley, and no other uncapped openers have really come close to matching how he was doing before he was called up. Throwing someone like Rob Yates in at this fledgling stage of his career would be suicidal.

Sam Robson had a great season and has some test experience. I wouldn't have been against even just giving him another go.

Crawley is in the squad but really unsure on him, first class performances don't really warrant the chance he's had and if you take out the double hundred he hit his test career would look dreadful. Although he must have something about him to get that double.

Australia is truly a brutal place to play when things aren't going your way.

Of course, the flip side of that is that it is a brilliant place when things *do* go your way, because the fanbase and players over there are as poor losers as they are brutal winners.

Yeah, I think Robson's just been out of the frame for so long that people have just forgotten about him as a serious contender? Crawley's day out against Pakistan was some innings but it's amazing he managed to last that long at the crease given how rash he is a lot of the time. Suspect he'll be given a go next time out though and he does have some experience in Aussie Grade Cricket which may help him, though I've never really been convinced by him at all.

Robson is Australian as well so would have been decent to at the very least take him with the Lions. Same with Livingstone really, stats in red ball cricket recently don't really warrant selection (doesn't seem to stop us) but overall he has a good record. He would have also given us another spin option and he's quite clearly a big game player.

Fair play to Root and Malan again but non-conversion of these decent scores will ultimately be the difference I fear.

Mind you, it's looked a struggle out there since the break with Green and Lyon keeping it tight. Starc gets to reap the rewards...

The difference a tight bowling spinner can make. Aussies have bowled well, and we've shown a lack of patience. Pope in particular is too chaotic and nervous.

We seem to have a fear of giving any spinner other than Leach or Bess a chance. If we're that fearful of doing it in terms of an actual bowler, it makes it even stranger not having someone like Livingstone in the squad

Wow, we really are garbage.

Some ridiculous stuff going on, Pope needs to have a good watch of that, awful.

We set ourselves up to lose with awful tactics and approach and the Aussies are the complete opposite.

Why am I even bothering.

Not at a competitive standard on or off the pitch. Embarrassing and this series will go down as an unacceptably bad showing from a supposedly top-level nation.

Unless Buttler pulls out some big numbers during the remainder of the series he's surely out of the test side after this

I'm sick of him, drops and no runs, rinse and repeat.

Needs to be dropped along with Burns both bring little value to the team.

They can take Pope with them.

Nice to see a pair just trying to stick around but Woakes playing a few loose ones.

Sod scoring rate just try and bat this day out and frustrate them

How come England didn’t pick a spinner for this test?

They mixed up the paperwork and submitted the team for this Test in Brisbane and the team for the first Test here.

Did you watch any of Leach's efforts in the first test?

Hardly surprising though, the management have spent most of the year trying to undermine any confidence he may have had left.
