I’ve said it many times but I’ll say it again. Some people would rather football returned to the bad old days of hooliganism and declining attendances of the 70s and 80s because it suits their definition of atmosphere; aggressive, prejudiced and abusive.

I went to matches then and I go to matches now and it’s far better now. Women and children feel safe and all ethnic minorities are welcome, unlike then. Some European countries are about 20 years behind us in sociological terms and so their crowds resemble what we would think of as a bygone era.

Silly protests and complaints about clappers are doomed to failure and represent a minority of actual supporters. Football will never return to those dark days but if it did it would be dead in a generation.

Wet wipe

much better back in the days

It's not even a Filbert Street/KP argument either. Our championship years were brilliant here tbf. Even if we were a shambles on the pitch at times. We had a good songbook and lots of spontaneity amongst the crowd. Everything just feels so forced at the moment

They have to rejig it before that whopping stand goes up. Make these sections permanent and watch it grow.

Tielemans noticeably loves quality atmosphere. Hope the bloke who won us the FA Cup commands enough respect within our club to make this be realised. If not, then what kind of club do we all support?

You can have a family friendly event with spine tingling atmosphere, Thursday just literally proved it.

Our end in the top tier was completely embarrassing. I genuinely felt like the only person trying to get something going. Blokes in their 60's flicking through Instagram mid game and genuine silence unless we'd scored or at the full time whistle. We have a following but we don't have "support". It's not going to be enough to get us to the final with away legs in the second legs to come. It needs to change

I'm buzzing that we're through but the majority of our fan base is shocking. All mouth on the walk to the ground but not a song in the stands where it counts.

I'm to the left of UFS every week and that's the but that ****s me off the most, as soon as a song/chant gets going you get the horrible slaping noise of 20000 using clappers. Clearly the club like the fact they think it is getting everyone involved, but it kills any lyrics.

I'd love to know if the players enjoy playing with that horrible monotonous drone going on in the background. And as you say you look up and its like 8000 lemmings in the east stand lol

....it seems pretty obvious you are in the minority if 20k are using them!!!

Really? I remember our championship years at the walkers especially 03 to 08 being almost devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever. Miserable football played in a soulless flat stadium. It was good when we first moved in with dean and dickov up front and in patches under Pearson especially when we walked the league but the most part I remember longing for filbo in those years.

Are away support was genarlly loads better than it is now tho as tickets were more accessible to groups of lads on the piss.

The atmosphere at the kp from the great escape season v West ham to the champions league quarter final v Athletico was buy far the best period in my life some of those games were so loud!

Even now it can be good the game v Liverpool was a belting atmosphere.

.....the game against Newcastle had a great atmosphere, we squeezed them with a highline, Albrighton was buzzing, we played with a back three and were relentless!!!

I had never previously heard it so loud, I left that game believing we could never be beaten again.

The atmosphere in the league winning season was the best for sure but as the whole world smiles with you says, it  comes alive again in matches such as Liverpool.

Equally the atmosphere in the early 2000s was awful because we were awful.

Thank god we didn’t have the clappers back then, would have destroyed the atmosphere I’d bet!

I miss the days where you could just rock up and pay on the gate

Whilst I also miss that aspect, I could easily name a dozen aspects of the match day experience from those times that I don't miss.

Getting to Filbert street at 1.30pm for a 3pm kick off  to get a seat to stand on in pen 2.

Queuing around the block for tickets

They would've been used as weapons. Remember the Millwall brick?

France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden. All countries just as developed as ours, all countries with atmospheres that shit all over what our leagues have to offer.

Some grounds,  because of their build and acoustics help towards a better atmosphere, dare I say it, the older one's compared to one's like ours.

We have in the past have had some decent atmospheres at the King Power despite the different demographics of the fanbase. However, I believe the main contributor to an atmosphere is the sort of fayre being dished up on the pitch below. Win or lose, the offerings in more recent times have been pretty poor in terms of entertainment. The dirge of side to side and backwards supposed possession based football is at best, uninspiring and hardly commensurate to shouting and clapping. Yes, you're supposed to clap your team on through think and thin and I think people still do to some extent but, neither can you ignore the fact that for some time now, we've been subjected to Rodger's water torture treatment also 🤣. I forsee clappers being replaced by pillows and blankets.

In fairness, of late, there has been a little more aggression and endeavour to cheer about. KDH clearly has a bit of zest about him and there's a bit more 'have a go' about us at the moment with the exception of Tielemans who appears to be wandering round in a lethargic daze. Wins are important, but attitude, effort and endeavour excites crowds even more.

And given you've totally outdone me in the 'being so Internet' stakes, I'll just have to hand my gold medal to you.

I think the problem is the Venn diagram of "ultra displays" and "hooliganism" is so fuzzy.

I mean, I am the poster child of everything lots of posters hate on this site: Middle-aged guy who sits in the Family Stand with my wife and primary school kids. I use my clapper, I love the pregame montages (now we have two! Goosebumps!); could care less about the goal music debate, although I love watching my 8-year-old dance to it.

However, I like the tifo displays (I share them on social media! I am an influencer, it seems), and like the chants.

BUT

You just see the idiots. I hated losing to Forest, but if karma exists, there's some proof. Our "fans" embarrassed our club before, during, and after the game. The boorish behaviour of some of those in Randers, etc. etc. The violent stupidity shown in the stadium during the Napoli and Warsaw games. You sometimes see it on this forum, with a certain glee when things "kick off".

Again, what is the intersection of the Venn diagram? Do people wanting a better atmosphere want to tolerate hooliganism (even in its milder, "hey, it's just banter"! form)? Of course not! But do most of the junior (and not so junior) goons think they are supporting "football culture"? Yep.

I sympathise with the club directors, who want to stamp this out, and until we can regularly keep it from "kicking off" on our most prestigious nights, I doubt the club will fully support a more boisterous atmosphere.
