Wife and kids and trampoline secured ready for the storm!

Why on earth are you and your family planning on bouncing around during hurricane force winds?

Putting some detail on the storm in our area, apparently the wind will gradually increase from 50mph during the morning, coming from the south west, then increase to a maximum of 77mph after 2.00pm, coming from the west. So cycling from Leicester to Uppingham in the afternoon will be a breeze!

This is a very dangerous intensifying extratropical cyclone packing a sting jet which looks to be funnelling directly over the South West. Picture a low level jet stream, enhanced and channeled by an explosively deepening depression, and then think October 1987. This is not going to be pretty. If you can stay at home tomorrow absolutely do. Stay off the road unless absolutely necessary - and if you get away with nothing more than a missing fence panel, be grateful. Storm Dudley ripped out several branches of my Elder last night - but there is also a 65 ft willow next door which is similarly brittle and most of the boughs overhang my garden. The sting jet itself at the end of the cold conveyor is very narrow, and so very hard to forecast, but it looks as though the strongest winds will be felt across Cornwall, Devon, the Bristol Channel and into South Wales.

How come you know so much stuff about things?

Not criticising. Just asking.

These are predicted max gusts for 1500 tomorrow. If this comes off it is going to cause massive disruption and damage. Sustained winds of this speed are unheard off inland.

Oh wow, people were saying Cornwall would see the worst of it but looking at that it looks more like the Midlands/East Anglia bearing the brunt.

That’s later in the day, the worst will hit the first places of land it hits hence why there’s a red warning for Cornwall and South Wales.

This is just one snapshot in the afternoon from one of the models. I think Cornwall and the SE will get "the worst" early tomorrow morning. The winds on the southern edge of the storm will track NE across England during the day.

I'm suprised there isn't more "Red" warning given the predicted wind and the fact that the affected areas don't usually see these kind of winds. I mean, up in the Highlands this would be a "might bring the washing in" kind of day, but down here it has the potential to be a very bad day.

Let's hope things ease off a little...

A very good example of climate change?

Maybe. But these storms (usually referred to these days as "European windstorms" have occoured over the centuries. Occaisionally we get a big one (like the Great Storm of 1987 or the Burns Day Storm).

This one is concerning because it is hitting large population centres during the day.

Stay safe people

Studied Applied Meteorology and Climatology. This phenomena is incredibly complex and far from understood though - and I really don't claim to myself.

In that 1987 storm (in the days before storms were given silly names), a roof tile fell off the house and damaged the car. House insurance or car insurance jobby? The house insurance paid.

These aren’t sustained - they’re gusts. Sustained winds are maxing about 40 mph. there will be a some damage tomorrow but it’s not looking like it will be burns day storm levels. @Line-X has already mentioned about the possible sting jet and that’s what’s likely to raise those numbers but it will be a localised track across the country and unpredictable

It's actually a really good site isn't it? I like how they have their own FoxesTalk style meltdown when a predicted snowfall event turns out to be shit! lol

what do you make of this @Line-X and @st albans fox. This has been posted in isolation on the netweather forum and looks like the max gusts are even a bit higher?

Different weather models will give different predictions…….at short range as we are now at, I would be looking at the met office website for the most accurate prediction of conditions likely in your area ..

and the previous forecast wind speed chart posted earlier was for 3pm whereas this one is midday when winds are likely to be closer to their peak

I don't get how they're all just casually sitting there as well watching it smash the windows anyway.
