There's far to many metrics like this now and, for me, just takes enjoyment away.

I'm big into stats such as "xxx has scored so many goals for the first time since xx" or "team a have beaten team b for the first time since year x" but so much in game stats now that are just boring.

You only like top goal scorers stat?

I think he means which team won the game.

Which is the most important stat.

Stop using this as a barometer for what happens in a game.

It's a load of shite!

Mods - Is it possible to quadruple rep a post?

It’s like trying to use one metric to analyse ….. no context

i think it’s of use if you’ve watched the game but then again, if you’ve watched the game then you don’t need Xg to tell you who deserved to win etc etc …..

It is A metric, but by no means THE metric. If you get my meaning.

Sums it up nicely.

Its on par with possession for me in terms of usefulness. It isnt this all powerful might-as-well-be-goals stat that twitter fan boys wa nk themselves silly over.

Surprised to see this crop up when it can be used as a negative against the football we're playing :D

Also stop using points dropped from winning positions.

If we could all use possession and total passes completed as the barometer for performance, except for when we're playing again Man City, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea then that'd be great thanks.

This is such a reactionary thread to start. How can xG annoy people so much?

It's a helpful tool to analyse a team's performance over time. When the top clubs are using stats like this to improve their performance, they might be onto something don't you think?

If you don't like it, just ignore it.

Which is the point.

People bringing it up in every post match thread, pre match thread, Rodgers thread.... it's impossible to ignore it when it's littered in these sort of threads.

Football analytics is probably on its way to becoming a multibillion pound industry (if it's not already), there's literal rocket scientists that have netted the field to help clubs find an edge, when clubs are spending £000s of millions each summer, having the right data and the analytics team to crunch is absolutely key. Liverpool are one of the most data driven clubs in the world, they're now one of the absolute best without having spent inordinate amounts. xG is plays a big part of that. It's basically just the shots stat with more context.

There doesn't seem to be too many in the pro-xG, pro-Rodgers camp though

Quite.

Repeating what I said in the Unpop Opinions thread here:

Football analytics (including xG) is a vital part of the success of every single Premier League club that has success (and probably more lower league clubs besides) and those that dismiss it out of hand are overly romantic Luddites who hark for a rose tinted view of the past.
