Not the defender we want. But probably the defender we need. Always near the top of the % aerial duels won and headed clearances charts. He would improve our woeful set-piece defending immediately. Whether he has the all-round game BR is looking for is up for debate though.

Would love to have a gamble on him.

For starters he is Premier League quality, obvs Burnley have just got relegated but he is a top-flight defender.

It would be good to see how he performs in a team where the focus is progressive play rather than 10 players defending.

Think he could be decent, nothing like a big King Cnut at the back.

He may be convinced otherwise by the prospect of playing alongside his old teammate Fofana...

Maybe but the latest reports I’ve seen is that he wants to stay in France especially now that Marseille have qualified for the champions league

Not fussed either way. We should have got him when we signed Vestergaard if we were ever going to get him in.

....it would have cost us something like £40m at the time!!!

Burnley, or to be correct Dyche would have been looking to milk the situation. I felt that we had locked this deal down sometime ago but that was not the case. Puel played a blinder for his club when we picked up Fofana, they got the best deal that they could, by playing hardball.

now this is the dream!

As others have said it feels we missed the right time to make this happen. He was just what we needed for this season… that doesn’t mean he’s just what we need for next season.

Everton have reportedly offered £120,000 a week. God knows where they are getting the money from but we should stay well away at that price.

He’s worth half of that at best.

He might want to stay in France but currently that doesn’t seem to be an option.

If we were interested it could be a straight up choice of joining us or playing for a manager who clearly doesn’t rate him at Arsenal.

Everton cooking the books, but no doubt will get away with a slap on their wrists. They were also linked to Vesty. Probably have the slowest CBs in the PL if they got both.

Someone will overpay for him and I don't think it will LCFC. Need to go younger because you're going to be replacing either Fofana, Evans or both wtihin 2 years.

Put this in the Twitter Transfers Rumours thread - Telegraph have reported it's Everton and Villa in for him, not us.

Great work by congerton.... oh wait...

I was keen on him a few years ago but not anymore. Let Everton have him. Find the perfect partner for Lil Wes like Saliba. Evans won't keep going forever.

Saliba is going back to Arsenal, unlikely they sell

Villa will throw silly money at him.

We need a whippet who's about 6 ft 5 so not keen at this stage.

Chelsea being taken over surely increases our chances of getting Colwill, even if its just on loan. I'd be willing to risk a loan for a top class young player like Colwill or Cole Palmer in a priority position that enables us to use the finances to get the required players in to strengthen us overall. This rebuild won't be done in 1 year, arguably next summer will be even more of a challenge.

Apparently Chelsea will have 200m to spend but some of that money will come from player sales. I would chuck 30m+ at Colwill like we did with Fofana to be honest. Loan with an obligation to buy would be ideal.

But it just goes to show what we’re up against really.. Man Utd & Spurs have 150m to spend, Chelsea 200m and Newcastle will probably spend similar..

We are up against it but as we see on the continent, there's some excellently ran teams who challenge the grotesquely ran teams of the PL in Europe and often the squads match up fairly well. We'll always be stung when trying to sign players compared to your Frankfurt's, Atalanta's etc but there's plenty of value. The transfer rule changes won't have helped teams like us either but we have Leuven to get around it if only we can free up £15-20m to purchase some develop type players who we don't just need right now. Swedberg at Hammarby or Holm from Valerenga would be unbelievable here in a year or so once a work permit could be obtained.

Villa offering him £120k a week as well now apparently. We won’t be paying that even if we were still interested.
