However, there must surely be some common sense in allowing the referee into the Country, if he's got all the necessary paperwork and no criminal record. Common sense towards someone like this referee given the current situation? Chance would be a fine thing. 1

How shocking! 5

Afaik they've done nothing about the refs and some other staff. I'm not surprised. I didn't expect this bureacratic, corrupt organisation to do anything right. There wasn't any profit involved for these criminals so they left the Somalian ref alone in his misery. Edited Wednesday at 15:57 by Fear Of The Fox

Top referee in Africa, no criminal record, ridiculous decision. He will be at the next World Cup and many more after that (assuming they aren’t hosted in backwards countries, which tbf is probably a stretch given it’s FIFA ). Does show FIFA has lost a bit of the control they typically have over World Cup proceedings in other countries. In South Africa they basically became a law unto themselves and had the local government agree set up special “World Cup courts” (kangaroo courts, effectively) in the country. spacemunky Posted Wednesday at 17:31 Posted Wednesday at 17:31 Parked next to someone today with a Bosnian flag on their car. We play them on Friday and it would be nice to see people supporting the country they live in. I have the St George's Cross on one side of my car and the Canadian flag on the other.
Foxdiamond Posted Wednesday at 20:44 Posted Wednesday at 20:44 Not expecting much of England in this World Cup. Just thinking how perception would have changed if they has won those two Euro finals 1
Kitchandro Posted Wednesday at 21:30 Posted Wednesday at 21:30 Infantino is a caricature of evil on the level of Disney villains, except he has that one quality which makes someone all the more hateful in that he presents himself as a respectable man. Freeman's Wharfer Posted Wednesday at 22:00 Posted Wednesday at 22:00 (edited) The expanded tournament won’t help but do people not remember the pattern?: Qatar - people were going to be thrown in prison for drinking and anything even slightly in support of gay rights Russia - the mafia/cage fighters were going to beat up anyone with a slightly English sounding accent on the spot, no questions asked Brazil - the favelas were going to empty out and mug anyone not samba’ing along the street and the stadiums were never going to be ready on time South Africa - everyone was going to be forced to camp in game parks amongst lions and the townships were going to empty out and murder football fans This tournament’s version is everyone will be denied at the border and the stadiums will be so empty people will think Covid is back… I’ve been to the last three World Cups and I’m going again to this one. Some of the games will be rubbish and the Americans will be annoying, but it’ll all be fine! Edited Wednesday at 22:01 by Freeman's Wharfer 1

He is a knob for sure, but he is correct in thinking there is huge money to be made by FIFA in the USA, and I guess that is his job ultimately.

When it was in Russia I was quite politically naive and ignorant but I find it hard to believe anyone can be with this one, American news and social media is impossible to avoid. Anyway, it saddens me I won’t be able to enjoy it when in truth the players should be getting a huge amount of criticism for not boycotting. It’s comfortable to point fingers at a blatantly corrupt authority like FIFA and say well there’s nothing we can do. But it’s a lot harder for people to accept that Messi, Ronaldo and co plus their teammates saying ‘we’re not playing in a fascist country’ would have forced FIFA’s hand. It’s just another reason I can’t enjoy football anymore. These people are ridiculously powerful and privileged and yet they aren’t willing to make even the tiniest stand for the public. The national FAs, the players, fan associations etc could all take a stand, but none of them do. TV stations have spent billions in broadcasting rights, there would be massive legal consequences cascading through the system and I'm sure FIFA would sue or expulse any FA that do anything of the sort. I'm not at all for more player power if it's done with greed in mind, but if they could apply more pressure on moral grounds I'd support it. They have been forced to move base to Mexico and are only allowed to fly in to US on game days, have to go through immigration every time. Already lost 14 people from their party. They are set up to fail, will be very impressive if they manage to do anything at all in the tournament.

My son and I are going to Boston for 5 days to see the England vs Ghana match, and I wondered if anyone has any recommendations for sports bars to watch other matches while we're there, or if there's any must-see places to visit during our stay? Loving Boston so far, it’s all pretty walkable so easy to get around. I did the whale watching tour yesterday, you absolutely can’t come here and not do that. We were surrounded by about 20 humpback whales for a good hour. Been up the View Boston platform in the Prudential building as well, good views but usual tourist trap price wise. Quincy market is good for food. Where abouts are you staying? Just been to an unreal American Diner called Charlie’s Sandwich Shop which I would recommend.
