If Rodgers is insistent on having 3 x senior keepers in the knowledge that Schmeichel would be moving on then Ward / Iversen / Smithies is more cost effective and arguably of equal quality to Ward / Iversen / Jakupovic.

He likely will never play for us and we've replaced Jakupovic with a cheaper option. +1 on the home grown quota too versus a Swiss international. It's also a move clearly designed to benefit young Stolarczyk's progression in enabling a loan move too.

It's far from exciting, but it's hardly an issue bringing him in.

As long as we aren't paying a stupid amount in wages then there's nothing to really argue about with this signing.

Frees up Stolarcyzk to go out on loan

Zero expectation of him playing

Older head in the dressing room to whip these kids into shape

Yeah, not a bad one... GERRIMINNNNN

Jakupovic is better but considering he’ll never player and his wages will be lower I don’t mind.

Think he fell out with the club.

Maybe the club finally latched on to the fact he'd made millions of pounds over five years without actually doing anything?

Some of the responses here are utterly bizarre.

If we went without, Knowing our luck Ward and Iversen will get injured at some point and before you know it you’ve got the possibility of Odunze/Young as a rabbit in the headlights away at the Etihad or Anfield.

Doesn’t even save a squad place keeping Stolarcyzk here as @Ric Flair said. He’s too old.

Honestly some of you lot just want to moan for the sake of it.

Ridiculous argument, if we were in a position where Ward gets a long term injury, and Iversen is sent off in a game, who do you want coming on? Am experienced pro or some 19 year old who hasn’t played a game before.

For anyone complaining about the money, don’t see it as money spent on Smithies, see it as a huge investment in Stolarczyk- highly related keeper we have who now needs to go out and play games. He can’t do that if we don’t have cover.

How is it a ridiculous argument? Name a time where we have had to play a third choice keeper then. It just seems like a pointless £1.2m added onto the wage bill and used as a fact to mask the fact that we’ve signed nobody.

It’s not a mask, we’ve be open about wanting to sign a replacement third choice keeper all summer. We need one, every club has one and it allows a promising young keeper to go out on loan.
Think of it like paying for insurance, you pay out a monthly fee, you hope you never need it, but if the shite hits the fan, you’re glad you paid out for it.

Alex Smithies bodes well for other transfers?  My God.

Yeah I grazed my chin from how far it dropped after reading that.

7 pages on the signing of Alex Smithies :nigel:

As opposed to the 85 pages for CDK who never at any point looked like signing?

Hang on… thought this was about squad spaces and not money.

This signing won’t affect squad space - Smithies comes in, Stolarczyk goes out on loan.

We sold a keeper last week mate. Gives us a chance to get Stolarcyk out on loan.

So he was doing his job as our 3rd keeper then

Sounds very much like that.

No idea how true but I heard he wanted the club to pay for treatment and we made him get it done on the NHS 😂

Surely the most sensible thing to do is see if Ward or Iversen can cut it before adding a backup to those, I really have my doubts about Ward especially. Ideally we'd sign a top class keeper as the number one instead of just another player who doesn't play to add to the long list we have already.

Mate, the lad will not be on decent wages….. it’s exactly the type of third choice keeper we need…..

I reckon he will be on about 20k per week. That’s still a decent amount we could of out towards someone like Lafont.

Considering our issue is wages, I’m not sure we should be getting 3rd choice keepers.

we need to start improving the 11. This is what has got us into this mess. Padding out the squad with average players on good money

Point missed… if we had money we’d get a better keeper than him.

If we get a first choice keeper in, Ward or Iversen want out - back to square one needing a third choice keeper.

For third choice? I imagine we want someone who is cheap and will come for low wages - Smithies ticks both of those boxes. Will likely never play a game for us.

Unless we're not planning on signing a new first choice keeper and having Stolarczyk as number 1 in the next two years so just plan to make do with Ward/Iversen in the time being

I'm as skeptical about the clubs finances as they come at the minute but the logic with this is that they don't want to fork out for a new first choice GK so they'd rather get a cheap 3rd choice and use what we already have.

Ward cost 12 odd million pounds so we need to get some return on investment.
