Because I take my grandson to the games

Fair play mate, I can't see any fault in that. Putting your feelings to one side, so your grandson can go to the game is a respectable move

Feel like the round of games should go ahead in spite of events, just feels the more sane course of action. But selfishly I can't be bothered to watch us lose to Villa and the thought of not having to watch us play until after the international break is appealing.

So instead of going footy i'll be forced to go Ikea, is this really what Liz would have wanted?

IKEA on a Saturday? You're brave, I'll give you that.

Why would there be major opposition?

That's probably their fear, but in reality, it would be a tiny insignificant portion of the population that genuinely were against it.

If people are genuinely upset, they definitely won't be worrying what other people are doing lol

If the games DO go ahead, the vast majority of those with tickets will still attend - which suggests that any 'opposition' will be minimal.

How many police are there at the KP though, 100-200 max? I get you’d need more in terms of contingency should there be crowd trouble/an emergency but are the police really that under resourced?

I think that’s stretching things a bit (from their point of view not yours). How does London cope when their is a jubilee? Or any of the thousands of other events that happen in London every year.

I think they are massively overestimating how many people will want to go to London to stand outside Buckingham Palace.

They draft in resource from other forces.

Other events in London probably won't cover the scale of tourists and people that will visit London over the next few days/week.

I think there's an underestimation! This will be huge - there'll be millions across the time between now and funeral.

Seeing bizarre things where Sunday morning recreational leagues are awaiting advice from the government? WTF. The only reasonable argument is policing (which I think is OTT cos events such as these don’t need huge numbers).

Don’t be such a knob. I simply made the point that a lot of fans would be left out of pocket. You might be able to lose £50 and for it to be nothing, but that’s not the case for many of us.

Can't agree more.  Bit narrow minded to suggest £50.  Do u think they will reimburse my costs for flights, a hotel, airport parking etc all of which are non refundable.  Same goes for fans travelling to away games....don't think games should be postponed but if they are then they are.  It will actually cost supporter's in general millions of pounds when all added together.

Yes our league is “awaiting direction from the FA”

There isn't a tradition of postponing football games because of a monarch's death. This would be the first time.

Can you explain why postponing public events shows 'respect' for a monarch? Surely allowing them to go ahead, with appropriate tributes to allow people to celebrate her life in public, would be far more respectful?

Doing whatever people normally do is not really showing respect for an event such as this. A couple minutes silence followed by a roar doesn’t really cut it.  If that’s how you feel then it’s no problem. But the sport has to manage its public image and two days after the queen’s death, with the country in ‘official mourning’, having hundreds of thousands of people screaming abuse at opponents doesn’t look very respectful and those people reflecting on what the monarch stands for and has done. Like I said, you can have a different viewpoint and you can care not a jot about the fact she has passed but we are a constitutional monarchy and the country has to proceed on that basis.

There haven’t been that many deaths of monarchs to judge precedent and what was done seventy years ago may not be appropriate for now.

postponing all sports events this weekend would seem reasonable to me and full programmes next weekend ahead of the funeral is a compromise.  The authorities may decide to do it the other way around, playing this weekend and postponing next.

All in the name of some faux, flag waving moral box ticking exercise. It isn’t 1925.

Another bizarre thing - our internal weekly e-magazine thing at work has been cancelled due to the Queen's passing lol lol

I’d be very surprised if this isn’t postponed tbh.
I don’t think it should be personally. I can’t see how postponing sporting events can be a good thing for the country and I doubt very much it would be ‘what Liz would have wanted’?

But the FA will just postpone the matches this weekend I suggest because it’s the ‘right thing to do’..

The respectful thing to do is to do whatever the person who dies would’ve wanted and to respect their wishes.

Now, it’s of course possible the Queen would’ve genuinely wanted the country to grind to a halt, but still have to go to work yet not do the things they enjoy in their free leisure time. But I very much doubt she, or the vast majority of people in her position, would want to do that. I know I certainly wouldn’t.

To be honest, I think you’d have to a genuine diagnosis of psychopathy and/or narcissism to genuinely want that.

If they're going to postpone the fixtures they need to do it in the next couple of hours. In fact a decision should have already been in place last night or early today morning. There are thousands of people involved in sports events.

I think they’ll postpone but the longer they don’t make a decision I feel it’s less likely to be postponed.

whilst she apparently was a person who fully respected the will of the individual, she was also red hot on tradition and observing protocol.  I’m sure she would have expected sporting events to be postponed in the immediate aftermath of her passing (obvs an hour or two  is too immediate). Whether you consider 36/48 hours to be immediate enough is a judgement.  Maybe it’s enough that todays stuff is off and tomorrow we carry on as normal
