Lets be honest, if the prem decides to play the games, the attendances will not be significantly down, so all the people virtue signalling here and other places could stay at home and mourn (unless they work of course),  but my guess would be that there wont be too many who choose not to go.

Reading your comment about the attendance, made me think all the people who said they wouldn’t go to vote with their feet. BR, if asked, would give this as the excuse for that wouldn’t he!

When the helicopter carrying Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha crashed out of respect the upcoming  game against Southampton was cancelled, a couple of Woman’s games involving Leicester City teams and a game involving Oud Heverlee we’re  likewise cancelled

Of course the loss of Vichai was mainly felt by Leicester City supporters but the loss of a Monarc will be massively impacting quite a large number of the population and if football doesn’t cancel this weekends games then sorry it’s lost it’s heartonce and for all

I’m not sure they are entirely comparable, one died prematurely in a horrific accident just yards from our stadium that was witnessed by members of the playing and backroom staff.

The other died peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 96 and if you are religiously inclined is now reunited with her lifelong husband she recently lost.

Personally feel the games going ahead with marks of respect will be much more poignant but that’s me, if they’re off ah well.

Though to add do feel for those that will be left out of pocket if they are.

Keep the games on!

Those who want to mourn and grieve can choose to stay home and mourn, those who work hard to spend their money on going to the football can go to the football as normal. Everyone wins!

But I imagine they’ll be called off and we’ll be stuck watching wall to wall coverage of the death. Two good games on TV either side of ours at 3pm as well - gutting!

I'm big on tradition, mourning the monarchy if the tradition is that a lot of things come to a halt then that should continue.

It is surprising though that professional sport was played the weekend that the King died 70 years ago. Therefore, I suspect any decision to postpone all sport this weekend will set a new precedent.

As above, this is an apples and pears comparison.

So apparently the postponement is more to do with police and security personnel being told to go to the capital, to support the Met with the influx of tourists that will flock there to pay their respects.

Obviously with larger amounts of people, there's bound to be the need for more security and safety.

From that aspect I can understand why sporting events may be cancelled. If there's not enough police for the sporting events, they can't go ahead.

'Read the room' people! Regardless of what we want or think, there would be major opposition to the matches going ahead, and the PL couldn't afford the negative publicity. I can't see this weekend going ahead. i'd be very surprised indeed.

How many police are there at the KP though, 100-200 max? I get you’d need more in terms of contingency should there be crowd trouble/an emergency but are the police really that under resourced?

That’s the thing about traditions ……start watering them down and within a short period of time, as a nation,  you’re left wondering where your historic and cultural heart is ….

if it snows heavily then games are postponed - there isn’t an outcry …… I think one set of fixtures can be put back as a mark of respect for the deceased monarch of 70 years .

There isn't a tradition of postponing football games because of a monarch's death. This would be the first time.

Can you explain why postponing public events shows 'respect' for a monarch? Surely allowing them to go ahead, with appropriate tributes to allow people to celebrate her life in public, would be far more respectful?

I think that’s stretching things a bit (from their point of view not yours). How does London cope when their is a jubilee? Or any of the thousands of other events that happen in London every year.

I think they are massively overestimating how many people will want to go to London to stand outside Buckingham Palace.

I personally hope all football matches are postponed this weekend. Yes I will go to the game if it is on but out of respect I hope the FA postpone

This doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you go if you want the game to be postponed?

If you believe it should be postponed, surely you stick to your principles and give it a miss.

A local event in my town was due to go ahead on Saturday. It was cancelled yesterday.  There have been so many posts saying it is the wrong thing to do - real pressure is being put on the organisers to put the event back on.

the last one was in June not smack bang in the middle of a season.

To be fair it isn't just the public, they expect the majority of the worlds head of state  to travel to London over the next few days.

I’m with you on this, although I think the magnitude between George and the queens death is more significant, George reigned for 16 years the queen has basically been a lifetime, I certainly won’t be disappointed if they choose to call of the games this weekend, but on another note if they do go ahead it will be nice everyone to pay there respects across the nation
