I was just correctly pointing out that it was idiotic and immediately hands Ronnie the advantage from the off. No doubt it makes things more exciting though

It was stupid but if a red had fell in then people would’ve said it was genius…or they would’ve if it was the messiah Ronnie.

Everyone knows that breaking the reds up like that from the break is pretty much throwing a frame… whether it is Ronnie or anyone else trusting to such luck is pretty stupid

Ronnie did exactly that to Vafaei 18 months ago. Which is why Vafaei did it.

His match with Ronnie will either be a Crucible classic or Ronnie batters him with a session to spare.

And indeed it was the latter, embarrassing performance from Hossein.

Elsewhere Robertson was his typical Crucible self, peaked early then crumbled. Jak Jones full of confidence after his qualifying win against Hawkins.

I personally think Ronnie gets a lot of undue stick. He's clearly the best player to have ever picked up a cue, had a rough upbringing and clearly suffered from numerous mental health issues over the years. He's not always helped himself with certain things he's said or done, clearly, but the microscope is always on him, must be a massive amount of pressure. Gotta fancy him to get to the final again this year. Backed Higgins 16s this year.

Plenty of people have tough upbringing and mental health issues, it shouldn't be an excuse. He's just a bit of a prat and he knows it. He admitted it yesterday. He did exactly the same with Hendry over 20 years ago as happened with Vafaei, and Hendry didn't speak to him for 2 years. He spoke about how gutted he was about that as Hendry was his hero. He's basically saying he hasn't grown up in over 20 years and is still running his mouth and then apologising later.

For me there's a lot of Bobby Fischer about Ronnie - supreme natural talent and an obsessive of the game that puts them in the all time greats, but that same talent and obsession makes them sometimes a bit...off.

Or how about let's not make excuses for people being a bit of a knobhead. I agree he's extremely talented, he's just very unthinking when talking about others. There's plenty of talented sports people who are able to not put their foot in it like he does.

Although Fischer was a bit strange, his chess reputation as the all-time greatest chess player doesn't entirely stand up to close scrutiny, if you check his record against all the other official world champions. He only won that title once, famously in Iceland in 1972. Lasker, along with several others, won the title several times. Maybe being American and being a head-case gave him more fame than the other great chess champions, thereby inflating his chess-playing reputation above the others as a result of that.

Kyren Wilson in a bit of bother this morning, losing 4 nil to Higgins and probably about to go to 5 nil down. Higgins was break building very well especially in the first couple of frames.

Thought this might have been one of the best matches of the round, a 13-11 or something but not sure now.

6-0 and Wilson missed a massive chance to get on the board.

He certainly can be a knobhead, and being obsessive about a sport or pastime isn't an excuse for that, but rather an occasional corollary of it.

FWIW I don't think he's the all-time best either - that's Carlsen for me.

He was, however, for quite a while, so far ahead of his contemporaries he does stand out - he won every single match or tournament he played in from 1966 through to when he called it quits in 1972, some of them by utterly crushing margins. The only reason he wasn't world champion for longer was because of the tournament format and, yes, his own personal demons.
