Don't like him, questionable commitment and he's crap, but nowhere near top 5 worst ever signings.

Hhhmm - I’m struggling to think of 5 worse pound for pound. Came with a big reputation and has put the **** into **** all contribution

How far would you like to go back?

Roger Davies

Ade Akinbiyi

Dennis Wise

Junior Lewis

David Connolly

Matt Mills

Rachid Ghezzal

Islam Slimani

Adrian Silva

Danny Ward

Odsonne Edouard

Oliver Skipp

Give me Coady over any of that lot, any time. But ideally, he goes.

What? Largely agree with your list, but why Connolly?

We signed him for £500k and a year later flogged him for £2/3m on the back of being our top scorer.

i was thinking that too, Connolly was actually decent for us tbh and we made a profit on him too

on Coady, bet hes waiting to see whether Rangers are in the UCL or not etc

I’ve trusted fbref for about 4 years now and it’s never let me down.

I'm dreading the day we have to pay for it. Might be a price worth paying though.

He didn't play in a position where he had to win aerial duels. His job was to see the play ahead of him, anticipate and and mop up whatever got past Boly and Saiss. He started out his career as a DM. His strengths are reading the game, interceptions and passing. Everything he did really well at the heart of a back three.

It's like me saying Vardy was a shit striker because he didn't dribble past many players.

Something we haven't at any point attempted to do with him. He's needed a quite specific role / system to flourish. It was therefore a poor idea of a signing from us and a poor use of funds, another reason as to why we are now where we are.

David Connolly? He was half decent for the fee.

And we made a few mill profit.

Yeah I was ten years old, came back from school and my Dad showed me he’d been sold on the ceefax. Was absolutely gutted, as had seen him bag a hatrick a week or two before against Stoke!

I watched every single game he played for Wolves in those seasons, and I think I'll trust my eyes rather than a bunch of statistics thanks. He was an excellent player for us, albeit played in a very specific system with two really good defenders either side of him that mitigated his deficiencies.

You signed him seemingly without a clue how to use him. You watched him play in two different roles for Wolves then Everton, and chose the one he played shite at for Everton.

It's all on your recruitment and managers really. They thought they were getting a solid defender and a captain material. They ignored the fact he isn't good enough to play in a back four. Which is probably why those managers barely ever played him after seeing him in training. And even when they did eventually try him in a back three he had two of the worst PL defenders I've ever seen either side of him.

That's cool, happy to disagree with you.

David Connolly? The striker who we made a profit of when we sold to West Ham? Wouldn’t put him as a bad signing if we made money on him… but each to their own.

My top pick would be Josh Low or Robbie Neilson.

No way on earth can he ever go down as one of our worst ever signings. Only the sheep would think so.

The bar for crapness was was set by the likes of Lennie Roberson. George Armstrong. Martin Russell. Junior Lewis and Roger Davies.

Compared to them Coady is prime Beckenbaur material

My bad...I'd forgotten we made a profit on Connolly so he'd have to come off my list. But unlike most, I thought he was a fraud, always giving the appearance of making a challenge or a run, but not actually doing it. Just MO but I didn't rate him at all!

He’s been a poor buy largely because we didn’t need him, big wage too. Nothing wrong with playing ability in a three, knocks a good diag but square peg in a round hole like many more .

I think a lot of potential Rangers rumours have died down since Martin got the job. JV was pretty much signed and sealed and that's gone quiet, now Coady too.

I'd imagine he's probably got his own targets.

Ugh.

"He's a good defender, honest, all he required was two very good defenders to play with him to mitigate the fact defending is his deficency..."

He's a ****ing terrible defender, you just like him because he didn't have to defend for you, he compensated for the fact Willy Boly can't pass a football. Stadt isn't wrong in isolation and neither are the stats, Coady is a shit defender, just like Shinji Okazaki is a ****ing terrible forward. But Shinji Okazaki is a key part of Leicester winning the league, just as Conor Coady was a key part of what made your side tick. There's a lot of ways to skin a cat in football, Winks and Vestergaard were absolutely essential to Enzo winning us the league, they were completely useless to Ruud, didn't want or need their skillsets at all.

And that's the rub. It was on us to work all that out and we didn't. I personally think it was a bit of a throwback to to the Pearson era. Nige knew how to strike a balance, on the one hand we brought in the likes of Knockaert, Mahrez, Vardy and co to develop and on the other hand we recruited old warriors like Wasyl, Huth, Fuchs, etc with bags of personality who were established captains for club, country or both.

We knew we lacked personality in the squad, knew Coady had a reputation and had been a defender in the Premier League for a couple of defensive sides and just forgot to check whether or not he was actually good at defending.

I thought it was reported that Coady was one of Martins targets.

I presume its gone quite once Coady worked out how much he was likely to get paid.
