Usually when a team get relegated we hear about the collateral damage of back office/off-pitch job roles being made redundant but I haven’t heard anything on this so far this time around.

Have there been any? Does anyone know?

A couple of things made me think about this. Firstly, I read some quotes from Darragh MacAnthony (Peterborough chairman) about how impressed he was with the training ground when they played us the other day and he mentioned that we have 55 ground staff. Secondly, I watched the Northampton friendly on LCFC TV and they had a presenter, a commentator and two pundits (Matt Elliott and Matty Fryatt).

Both things feel like a Premier League operation still in cost. That training ground and 55 ground staff can’t be sustainable in The Championship and having 4 salaries for a friendly watched by about 10,000 viewers seemed overkill.

So what’s the plan? To maintain everything as it was in the Premier League and hope it’s just a one-year hiatus or are those in charge making the difficult decisions that usually have to come after a relegation?

I know a couple of people who work at the training ground and from what they've said, there have been no redundancies made.

They were fearing the worst after relegation as well. Like you've said I think the club are hoping it's a one year (two max) hiatus and then it's very much normal service resumed.

Tanner said there had been minimal, the club are like a family and protected staff as much as possible as they did during the pandemic:

The only area he mentioned a reduction is related to match day staff.

Considering they continued to keep and pay all their staff during Covid it's not a surprise if no one is made redundant. They'll probably implement a no recruitment for people leaving.

Things may change if we don't get straight back up.

55 ground staff probably earn collectively less than most of the squad earn individually - to get rid of one member of that team would probably equate to a days pay for vardy, it's such a minimal figure.  Also to weaken that team would be a false economy, what you'd save would be peanuts compared to what you'd lose by having inadequate staff to maintain the pitches.

Besides, economically, these sort of things, i believe, aren't covered by FFP - the club isn't broke, so there's no need to be cutting costs.

The number of people employed as groundsmen may be misleading, they run a Sports Turf Institute and Apprenticeship scheme that services grassroots clubs for a fee, very good as well.

I doubt any club dropping down from the Premier League makes redudancies nevermind one as financially backed and sizeable as ours. We arent a League one/two club that fights to stay a float year in year out

As long as they have planned for the possibility that does not happen. Pretty concerning if they haven’t.

Sheff United lost a lot of staff when relegated last time.

Perhaps some of the catering/waiter staff etc. on matchdays?

Some of them didn't seem to know what they were doing last season.

I was speaking to a member of staff who runs some of the community sessions. We were chatting at the 'Cruyff Court' facility in New Parks a month or two before we were relegated.

I asked him if there would be any impact on those sessions if we went down, and he said they would lose the Premier League funding.

Whether their jobs have been affected as a consequence I know not, or perhaps KP have/will maintain things? :dunno:

Vaguely know somebody who works (ed) in the community programme at some level and they said to me back in April they'd be out if we got relegated and there was plenty of tension about it. Only a friend of a friend really but assume they have now left.

Mate of mine works up at the training ground in a part time capacity with the younger age groups and was classed as casual, he's actually been taken on as permanent staff this summer so it seems it's business as usual. Think if we didn't go back up things may change.

However I suppose its false economy in a way. Having spent all that money on the training ground. To let the pitches, golf course facilities etc run down and get in a poor state benefits no one.

And 55 staff may sound a lot but I guess if you have the catering staff for 1st team and academy sides, along with the coaches at all levels, green and pitch keepers etc there's a separate landscaping team as well I believe it would be a small team for each area.

Think some of the hospitality/catering staff have gone for sure. The reality is they won't have the same demand for premium seats in the Championship vs Premier League

Most of them are zero hour contracts anyway. Compass run that side too I believe (well the waiting staff).

They basically have a huge recruitment day in August, invite a load of students and agency staff and then dish them out across the stadium. Training is zero. Those with experience are prioritised to the corporate side.
