X (was Twitter)

Does anyone else still use it?

In some ways, I prefer it to the radio and television for breaking news etc.

Me too. If there's a story I want to know more about I think it's better than most news channels or any other social media.

Guest Mee-9

Did that thing for the first time today where it took me a good minute or two to find X/Twitter.

Was looking for that bloody blue bird. RIP.

Elon musk is proof how you just need a leg up and a bit of luck to to be super successful. The man's an absolute moron.

He’s so confusing.

I’ve closely followed SpaceX from the very early days and I really do believe he’s been the driving force of their success. He genuinely was one of the key engineers of the Falcon rockets having taught himself rocket science and saw a pathway to making reusable rockets that nobody in the industry was attainable. Even 10 years ago it seemed quite doubtful they’d get it to work, but now it’s completely normal for them to reuse them. If I had the opportunity to fly on one today, I’d prefer to fly on a reused one than a brand new one. I firmly believe humans will land on Mars (colonising I’m yet to be sold on) within the next couple of decades at most, and he’s probably the one single person that has made that viable more than any other.

But then there’s the Twitter debacle, even long before he ended up in charge. He’s said so many stupid and decisive things on it, and since buying it it’s seemed an utter car crash.

My assessment is that he’s just not the sort of person that’s made to be able to deal with the fame and influence he now has and it’s given rise to the self destructive behaviour we now see. Being book smart often doesn’t translate to real world smartness.

Musk has shed any pretence of brilliance or genius since buying Twitter - he's been revealed for what he is, a complete ****ing idiot.

Your brand language and identity becoming so well-recognised, commonplace and ubiquitous that it becomes a verb is like gold dust - it never happens. To give all that brand equity up to rebrand as X - which is most commonly associated with porn sites, is bordering on insanity. Imagine Google changing their name and losing 'Google it'. Beggars belief.

He’s certainly an odd-bod.

Plenty of companies have successfully rebranded , though.

Imagine taking the ‘Chicken’ out, and rebranding as KFC.

And weren’t Google something like ‘BackScratch’ back in the day?

(I’m going to BackScratch it to find out)!

Or like a Facebook changing their name to something odd…..like Meta

All I know is that for the past 2 weeks, all I keep seeing is articles about the name change, and now one of my favorite forums has a whole thread dedicated to discussing it.  Sounds like free publicity to me.  But hey, you don’t like him therefore he does nothing right.  I get it.

The simpletons will continue to lick his privileged ring even though he has thoroughly demonstrated virtually zero business skill or even intelligence.

Anyone who doesnt understand the value of an established brand and sells it simply for their own ego is an idiot

Maybe.  It certainly looks pretty nuts at this stage, but it remains to be seen whether he can manage to evolve the platform into something like WeChat and make some money.

You can't buy the brand recognition and equity that Twitter had, it's the marketing holy grail, you could spend billions. Any marketer will tell you this is the stupidest thing he could do - and it all seems to be for no reason!

Facebook hasn't changed it's name. Facebook is called Facebook.

Facebook and Instagram's parent company is called Meta. It's completely different.

Facebook also has nothing like the brand equity that Twitter had, 'tweeting' and 'retweeting' have entered the lexicon - that never happens and the marketing value of that is immeasurable.

You're right though, there are plenty of articles talking about how incredibly stupid and pointless it is - a bit like how people slow down for car crashes. I didn't have any opinions on Musk either way before he purchased Twitter, but the wide variety of baffling and downright idiotic 'business' decisions he has made since taking control of the platform have certainly led me to believe that he is deeply stupid person.

Facebook used to be called FaceMash.

I can see why Musk has renamed Twitter to X. I reckon he wants the brand X to be his equivalent of Virgin.

He is a weirdo, but most geniuses are.

Google didn't change from BackStratch after years of being top of the market and the term Googling coming into common usage. KFC is just Kentucky Fried Chicken in short hand. People would have called it KFC and they just branded themselves as the common usage of the name. KFC was a common name for Kentucky Fried Chicken long before it was rebranded as it.

Facebook didn't change its name to Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc did. Facebook is still Facebook, it still has the huge F as it's logo it still says Facebook when you click on it and the app opens.
