He's not been very good over the past few weeks but the mildest hint of a comparison to Demarai Gray is outright insulting.

I mean, we’re comparing him to Gray who was playing in the PL?

I think the jury is out on Stephy myself.

From everything I had seen and read I was convinced Mavs was actually a bit shit when we signed him. In the main he has proven me quite wrong. He has been very good, but the last few games have seen a dramatic decline in his form. Same for a number of players. This can only be mentality and that is worrying. If you can’t feel confidence being top of the league, god knows how you’ll fare in the Premier League, where we will lose more than we win.

Why cannot it be opposition tactics? Mav was good (but not clinical) against Leeds but was poor in 2 games (QPR and Borough) where both executed a game plan that flooded midfield and nullified the wing thread (and were exceptionally clinical). Fatawu was better against Bournemouth as he had more space. We are getting ahead of ourselves with PL again, but if we make it most teams wont setup like QPR and Middlesbrough.

Very typical confidence player.

When ‘on it’ he’s pretty unplayable.

When ‘off it’ he’s pants.

This is why he’s not succeeded at the highest level. Hes too inconsistent to play regularly for a top side.

It certainly could be and I have said as much yesterday. I certainly think opposition tactics are playing a part with both Mavs and Fats.

Just me who thinks he hasnt been bad at all recently?

Me too, but most fans can't asses wingers performances properly. Played very well against Leeds (should have bagged at least one - but he wasn't the only one) and puts a massive defensive shift in when needed. Arguably taking him off against Leeds was the catalyst for them to get back into the game. Worked hard Saturday but nothing came off. Is a worry when his head drops but i don't think he ever stopped trying.

Correct. But this is the level that we're at currently and likely to be for a while, the players we can attract and retain fall into this category most likely.

Just need to hope he has a strong spell at the end of the season.

Very similar to barnes in that sense.

The last three games the opposition has double banked our wingers. Instead of finding a bit of space to operate in both wingers have had a man constantly challenging and another ready to challenge any break out.

The opposition are making our wingers look poor because they’ve identified it’s our key attacking threat, and they’re right.

This should have led to a tweak in tactics to exploit the gaps left by that extra defender, we seem to be finding that difficult atm

When this happens its time for our 8 and 10 to take charge and become more of the creative outlet. Unfortunately, we don't have a fit quality number 8 right now and if you can keep KDH on his right foot (helped if you decide to play him on the right as well) then you stand a chance that he doesn't create anything up to much.

This is the issue, if teams can shut down the wings we don't have an answer at the moment. Wilf was the surprise solution earlier in the season. We've even thrown Ricardo up there late on.

Casadei wasn't it, Praet's not it, Yunus doesn't seem to be it - we are sorely missing that no. 10/natural high 8

Harvey has had his big move though hasn’t he. To Newcastle, which must have made him a VERY wealthy young man (not that he wasn’t before). He’ll kick about there and see out his huge contract I suspect. Such is the life of the very fortunate, modern-day, top flight footballer.

Spot on. On Saturday we needed to go

through the middle sometimes but that’s not in our game plan.

I think if we re-wind back to the first half of the season we were really good at crisp passing through the middle… however that may have been against sides that weren’t sitting back so far

Just like 90% of wingers in professional football his performance levels differ from week to week.

When he is confident and at his best he has been brilliant but he can also be ineffective in  games too.

I just hope for the benefit of the team he has a strong end to the season.

He has succeeded at a higher level - his return in the French top flight is quite impressive to be fair.
