You've got to remember that signings we've made are either really raw or damaged goods. If players were that good and proven, they would be in the Premier League, not the Championship. He's damaged goods, but the hope is if we repair him, we get a good player for a really reasonable price. Harry Winks, looks exactly that, and has impressed everyone so far.

 

Your points are valid though. Mavididi is fast, powerful and skilful. But you see a hesitancy in him to drive at the opposition as much as I think he should do. It will be interesting to see him develop over the season. For now he's been OK and in fact quite good in some games, but you feel there's a lot more to come from him, as that price tag puts him in the top 10% of players in the division.

 

My expectation with him and Yunus Akgun is that at some point in the season they get on runs and start tearing it up. I think they will get a lot of chances and after a few go in will find their flow. Look at Wilfred Ndidi, he's scoring and assisting and he's hardly the player you'd have top of anyone's list to be contributing to either.

Madividi will find it a lot easier once we have more more of a threat on the right, teams are giving up space on that side to double up on him, Barnes suffered from this too.

Totally agree. Who do you concentrate on when every player is a goal threat? That's what it's like playing against the best teams in Europe. Dealt with Haaland? Oh just have to worry about KDB, Grealish, Bernardo, Gundogan, Mahrez, Foden... 

 

We are the Primark version of that!

I think the movements of 8s and CF will get better as well.

 

Noticeable second half more runs in behind by Ndidi and Casadei with Vardy coming the other way, looked more fluid.

I wouldn't say it was a sitter, a defender diving in and one getting back on the goal line.

I still think we look quite a way off it to be honest but you can't argue with the results, I am quite glad we have a manager who can sort of admit this himself though.

If N’didi had more finesse about his game he would be the most productive AM in the league. He times his runs to absolute perfection…. It’s just 9/10 his head falls off when he gets into the final third.

1st half was frustrating, some decent build up play but then once we got into the final third we were let down by poor decision making or a poor pass. Vardy looked isolated and we seemed over reliant on Albrighton firing in crosses which we were unable to capitalise on. 
 

The changes at half time, not sure if tactical or pre-planned seemed to work and suddenly in the 2nd half we seemed to have more quality and our passes in the final 3rd were finding blue shirts. Ndidi looked unreal with a great finish and then an assist for Vards, who looked a real threat in the 2nd half. Yunus looked very neat and tidy but also the type of player who has a trick or two and on a couple of occasions suddenly burst into a mazy run that nearly produced a moment or two of real magic. 
 

Whilst we are a long long way off the finished article, what Enzo and his coaching staff have achieved so far in not only from a coaching perspective, but from a psychological and fitness standpoint too is nothing short of remarkable. 
 

We were on our arse 3 months ago, he has come in and completely overhauled us, every player has improved technically, our mentality is excellent, our off the ball work is good and our fitness levels look incredible. The shift change in focus deserves great credit, the club seems together, the bond is back between players and fans and it’s great to see him giving academy players an opportunity too. 
 

Our recruitment has been excellent so far and every player promoted from the academy has made a contribution and shown they can be a valuable member of the squad, Ben Nelson’s cameo was interesting to watch, he looked confident and wasn’t afraid to carry the ball out into midfield, we look a completely different club to the utter shambles of last season. And this is only the beginning, yes we will have blips but the future is looking very positive.

Enzo Maresca handed out another lesson to his Leicester City squad in substituting players who he expected more from in their 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

City made it six wins from six by beating their League Two opponents in the second round of the Carabao Cup, but the goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy did not arrive until the second half, after Maresca had made four changes at the interval.

There had been very little goalmouth action in the first half, City failing to test 42-year-old Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy, and so for the second period Maresca introduced Ricardo Pereira, Ndidi, Yunus Akgun, and Wanya Marcal in place of Harry Winks, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Albrighton, and Stephy Mavididi.

While some of those changes were pre-planned, some of them were because players were underperforming, Maresca said. After the Italian dropped Wanya Marcal for the weekend’s win at Rotherham, telling him he “needs to earn” his place in the team, this was another message to the squad.


“With some things I was not happy, with some things I was already prepared,” Maresca said. “In this moment, it’s important for them to share minutes because we’ve played six games in about 20 days. It’s many games.

“Don’t ask me which players, but I was not happy. I think some of them, I expected more from them. They are important players for me, they are important players for the club, they are important players for their team-mates, and some of them they need to give more.”

Asked if he had told the players directly at half-time, Maresca said: “They already know. Sometimes they are so intelligent. They don’t need the manager to tell them, they can understand for themselves.

“But it’s like what happened with Wanya, it’s a way to help them grow and understand and to improve as a team. If they improve as players, we improve as a team.”

The game ended on a happy note though, with Ndidi getting his second of the season with a shot to the far post, and then Vardy nodding in his first of the campaign from Ndidi’s cross.

The manager said: “I’m happy to continue in this competition. I’m happy for the players, especially the players who are playing less, and the young players like Ben Nelson, Wanya played again, Yunus for his debut. I’m happy for all of them.”

“I’m happy. But I’m always looking for the things I don’t like to see how we improve. As I said, there are many things we need to do. But that’s normal. After two months, I’m quite happy how the team understands the idea.”

Would like to see Ndidi and Casadei start in midfield against Hull.

 

My only concern is the lack of back-ups for Doyle, Faes and Winks.

 

I'll be surprised if they stay fit for the whole season.

I think Ben Nelson could turn out to be good cover for our centrebacks and choudhury, whilst being a different type of player to winks, can play the position.
