If you're going to make these kinds of comparisons, I will just retort with Sammie Szmodics

Quit pro que…But how many on here were willing us to buy him due to his numbers believing Ipswich had stole a march on us.

Cannons about to turn 22 Szmodics is 29 but Cannon potentially could reach those same numbers that had all those posters pining & still have 7yrs to get better.

I agree with him staying out on loan but Stoke are awful and it feels he is scoring despite this but ultimately being held back by how bad they are.

I presume it is possible to call him back and send him elsewhere for the second half of the season? I know Sheffield United were interested in the summer. I wonder if any of the other sides towards the top, who resemble football teams, would give him the minutes he is getting at Stoke.

But if I was Cannon, unless promised games, I wouldn't want to come back! He's at an age where he needs to be playing regularly for his future career. Mcateer and probably some others before him aren't up to Premiership standard because by not loaning them out we've stunted their careers.

Playing regularly is great as long as he's being coached properly & he's learning. From what I've seen of Stoke's games he is very isolated & receives very little service. I can't see him improving in that environment.

Could we sell him on and use that money to fund a Ferguson transfer?

We're not buying Ferguson. He's being spoken about in terms of a top 6 side paying £xxm for, we're not even at the same level as Brighton right now.

Take this however you want as it's not a direct source, but I was told it by somebody who apparently has contacts within the training ground etc.

Apparently Cannon has all the technical skills etc but is just so painfully unintelligent that it's almost impossible to coach any kind of nuanced tactics in to him, and that's why Enzo (and subsequent managers) haven't fancied him.

The only subsequent manager has been Cooper and there was nothing nuanced about his tactics.

I think we over complicate the game sometimes. Patrick Bamford has multiple A Levels and turned down Harvard. Harry Kane ....doesn't.  Who would you want up top for your club? You'd never catch Martin O'Neil saying Claridge, Marshall or Savage were too dim to follow his tactics.

I’m sure that’s exactly what he said about Savage!

For Szmodics see Teemu Pukki, he was never going to cut it at Prem level, same goes for Joel Piroe. Canon has a chance as he had raw ability and age on his side.

Seriously?! It's still got to be better for his longer term learning and career to play every game at Championship level than attend training and just sit on a bench for Leicester City!

Imagine if you were him at the end of his Leicester City contract. What would make you more employable in professional football?

1. I played for a Championship level team, scored a very respectable amount of goals, learned a lot and believe I can kick on.

Or

2. I trained a lot with a lower Premiership team called Leicester City but never actually tested myself or did anything.

Give your head a wobble. If it was your young son how would you advise him?  It's his professional career by the way, not your bit of weekend entertainment.

Szmodics is currently on 3 goals and he's not playing as a striker with Delap playing ahead of him, bit premature to say he's not going to cut it at this level.

I think that's exactly what he said as Gerry Taggart said, 'he said, whatever you do, don't pass the ball to Savage'! Suggesting that his talents lay in other areas and they absolutely did. He was good at what he did.

3 goals in 15 games, by that ratio he’s going to struggle to break 10. Regardless of his position, he will not deliver the numbers required / hoped of him based on his champ form to keep Ipswich up.

I can’t see any of the big 6 after Ferguson. An ok goal record (13 goals in 60 games) and his frequent visits to the physio is why he can’t cement a place at Brighton never mind one of the big 6. His market is the mid to low end of the Premier League table id suggest.

Probably because he's not a striker. He's an attacking midfielder which is the position he played at his last club and from where he scored all his goals. Early days in a new team against much superior opposition.

That's what I'm saying, (although he spent about a quarter of last season as a striker).  Taggertvswise suggests he'll struggle to break 10 goals, when that would be an excellent return for an attacking mid in a struggling prem side. Only 2 players considered attacking mids got more than 10 goals last season. Palmer and Eze, the latter only by 1.

Currently had 8 goals and is 3rd top scorer in the championship. Can't be that bad a player

Always felt he looked alright for us, but just never got much play time, seems to be one of those that doesnt impress in training and sadly too many managers over emphasise training performances.
